Well my plans are to get a calica gt, but for fun I was looking at mr2's on auto trader, so I see turbo one for 13,000 and take a look, well hes got a 3sgte swapped in and body kit and tons of stuff, So now Im thinking at the end of August when Im planning on getting a car to see if I can talk that guy down to around 10,000. What do you guys think about that? Anyone been in an mr2? are they really small inside?

MR2s are sweet. they are pretty small inside but the go-kart like handling and the sweet roar of the engine behind your head makes it all worth it. wink.gif

when i was in one, it was a little smaller than my celica.

they handle very well and the turbo version does have the 3sgte.

the only thing i dont like about them is the pop ups. i cant stand pop up lights

ya this is a 91, he said he swapped in a turbo engine that kicks out well over 200hp, so im assuming a 3rd gen 3sgte.

It all depends if it is still for sale when i go to get my car, and if he'll bring the price don a bit, theres afew others for around 6000 or 7000 that i might consider.

Oh and Im still set on getting a celica, the mr2 is just an option, and id have to see what insurence would be on one.

i drove an MR2...really isn't any room...and if you are looking at them...gotta get the turbo...if no turbo, then no car! it's pointless to get the non~turbo one. other then that, nice looking car handles great and the power it produces for that small thing....i would say....either or, it's all in what u want to do. lata

personaly (tell me if im wrong) ive been calculating about this for a while. for the price you pay for that (ugly) mr2 you could get a (beautyful) celica and do an engine swap.

MR2- 12,000
Celica-2,500 - 4,000---swap (at the most) 7,000 = 11,000 (at the most) go for the celi!

USDM 2nd gens had 200HP, JDM 2nd Gens had 225 HP, JDM 3rd Gens had 245 HP, the waiting list for a JDM 3rd gen is over a mile long, if it REALLY is a 3rd gen i would snag that **** so fast, but i highly doubt it is.

MK1 MRs came in either 4age or 4agze, MK2s had either a 5sfe or a 3sgte, and MK3s have the 1zzfe (same as 7th gen celica GT). what people misconstrue is the fact that MR2 3sgtes are VERY different in generation and electronics than the celica 3sgtes.

Yeah... but you know what... with a MR engine setup, you can push well over 300 to 400 HP and still be a daily driveable car, whereas with a FF engine setup, you're limited to (approximately) at most 300HP.

My brother's MKII is pretty roomie for "2" people and doesn't feel as cramped as my co-worker's S2000. It does in fact have it's limitations in terms of transporting goods. But it terms of performance, it's MUCH BETTER than a Celica.

Arg, I always forget that the newest generation is the 3rd one. Anyway, did you know the 1st gen Mr2s are supposedly based on a rejected lotus styling?

I like the way the new ones look, I like em a lot. It's just sad they don't have the power.

Yes it is true...its not a reject more than a "we worked with toyota so why not give them the chassis we wont use" type thing. Turned out Toyota sold it with big earnings. Toyota and Lotus has always had their low profile stuff going on. Hell look at the new ZZ30 MR2 Spyder/ MR-S.. put a freakin Lotus Elise and a MR-S together and there is DEFINATELY a resemblance. If you owned an MR-S the next logical upgrade is the vicious looking Elise. Hell..if you need mroe proof the next lotus Elise will have a TOYOTA 2ZZ-GE engine tuned to 190HP with a TOYOTA drivetrain and other TOYOTA bits.....estimated weight is around 1900 running 12/low 13 second quartermiles. Danm.....now I want a Lotus LOL. Nothing is better than a Light, Top Down, Exotic looking roadster with a crisp tranny and an excellent engine matched to the chassis....::ahhhhh:: LOL

I like the way the new ones look, I like em a lot. It's just sad they don't have the power.

The age old question.....Why the hell didn't Toyota put the 2ZZ-GE instead of the 1ZZ-FE. Heres the answer...

Toyota had in mind that "hmm what would make us have profitable sales yet let us have a good quality sports car that can have fun"

Toyota Factored In the Following:
FACT: THe AW11 MR2 had the bset sales of the MR2 line
FACT: Critics attacked the heavier and less involving 2nd gen MR2 Turbo although it was more powerful.....tehy also attacked the 30K+ Price tag.
FACT: Lotus original design seemed to give a great edge and sales.

Tehy looked into the 1ST gen mr2 and what made it so popular.....they also thoguht "hmm maybe we shoudl do something innovative so that we have anotehr entice balh blah blah.....which then came the SMT (Sequential Manual Transmission"

They also looked to the classic british roadsters and etc.

Toyota found that they shoudl combine Lotus Elements (Lightweight and Goodlooking) classic british roadster appeal and then the AW11 original charming essence...

Although some love it and some hate it the MR-S is a fun machine...

Toyota finally decided on a frame not unlike the Pontiac Fiero which would make it cheeper to replace body panels and lighter too.

Toyota uses also plastics but very high qualtioy plastics to lower weight.

The 1ZZ-FE engien is used because they and many feel that it is more responsive and less work (in other words.more fun) Toyota claims that not sticking a 6-Speed be better for lighter weight (although now they stick a 6Speed in there in otehr markets..and now for the 2003 year there is a 6-Speed Sequential instead of only 5) The 2ZZ-GE engine is a bit harder to work but with the greater effort equates for more HP. The extra 50HP does not come in untill AFTER 6000 RPM's so Toyota thinks that the 1ZZ-FE engine is good enough.

MotorTrend tested the car and got a 0-60 in around 6.9-7.6 Seconds....the guy was probobly very thin.

The car only weighs around 2100 pounds w/o driver

Now think about the next lotus elise..wit hteh 2ZZ-GE, 6-Speed and only 1900 pounds......wowie

Hey.. there are a few 6Gen Celica's available up here in Toronto (what 3.5 hours from you .. lol)

So you shouldn't have difficulties tracking one down! Insurance is crazy though! Especially in Ontario.

I've noticed that Toyota Canada didn't bring many into Canada so getting parts is stress at time. Main things such as brakes, blah blah blah interchangable with other lines.. no problem..

Try getting something complex and expect to wait 3-5 weeks. It's already been 6 weeks for my shift boot (still waiting)

I also needed a special brake component.. had to order from either LA or Japan ... so I wound up welding/drilling the thing on my own..

Let me know if you need any help.
