Already searched the forum and found the next topics.
http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=26922&st=0 http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=6692&hl= Since both topics are more then 2 years old and I dont want to revive a topic like that, I made my own. My underbonnet insulation is crap, has tears around the lower part of the bonnet. Personally after reading the above topics a feel a little bit safer to remove the insulation and possibly the rainguard(maybe replace it with. But since those topics are that old I'd like a little but of confirmation of the GT-4/Swapped/Turbo'ed owners that replied then or new guys that can give a good anwser to the next questions. - Does the paint really stay good? (Mine is freshly painted 7 months ago) - I read something about Temperature Sensor going faulty but couldn't find any reason putting it in order with the removal of the insulation, can anyone confirm it won't cause problems like that? - Is it better to install heat reflective paint underneath the rain guard area or should it be fine? The insulation if prefectly fine to remove. Underhood temps won't burn or bubble or warp the paint. If that was true, all turbo car's rear bumpers would look like hell, by the muffler.
I'm unfimilar with the spoken of rain guard. pics? -------------------- NASA/SCCA RX-7....currently under the knife

1. I removed mine years ago. Paint still looks perfect.
2. I can't confirm that. But my car has not have any problem since. 3. It gets pretty hot there. Heat reflection will help reduce radiant heat. -------------------- _Gary

Is this still true for a 5sfe? -------------------- |

I meant it reduces radiant heat "from" the engine.
Most of us with 3S are doing fine without the insulation. With 5SFE, it doesn't get that hot. You don't need to worry about that. BTW, it's more like sound insulation and fire suppression than a heat insulation. -------------------- _Gary

well my 5sfte gets pretty hot and the insulation is rubbing on some of my piping...so i took it off and drove a few miles and noticed the paint UNDER the hood was already comming off. so anyways i put the insulation back on, not wanting to chance it. I have my stock hood on with no vents. If i take the insulation off, will the paint on top of my hood start to come off or fade?

I took it off today and took to car for a spin. With the window open I can cleary hear more noise coming from the engine bay. Drove about 30 miles or so and driven @ high rpm's just to see what kind of heat it would produce. It wasn't a hot day here (a bit of rain, probably 22 Degrees C) and I could clearly tell from opening the bonnet that everything is ALOT cooler now.
With this said, I'm still not completely happy with the rain guard out of that way. When driving it wont mind because it evaporates as fast as it drops into the engine bay, but when the car is parked; I only use it 4 day's a week and its always outside. I will keep the Rain Guard for Autumn/Winter/Early Spring period and if there's alot of rain I will put the guard back up (when staying parked for at least 24 hours) -------------------- JDM Powerplant installed, BPU coming very soon!

you wont ever have any issues with rain or snow entering into the vent. a lot of us ride around without that thing all year long in all kinds of weather conditions.

sorry to jack your thread, but while we're on the same topic here, would it be better to keep the rain guard and insulator for temperatures as low as -40 degrees?
the only reason i'm keeping mine on is that the insulator will help warm up my engine faster in the winter... and i don't wanna have to buy new hood clips all the time to remove the insulator and rain guard for the summer and put them back on in the winter.. and with the insulator on, you'll need the rain guard on as well. unless you cut a hole through it. -------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

i binned my rainguard almost as soon as i got the car. looks alot better without it, plus its good seeing the chimney of heat coming out when you're parked in traffic lol.
i was initially concerned about water going all over the engine when its parked up, but I doubt its gonna make too much mess. Considered making a custom rain guard that sits a bit lower so would keep the water out when its stood but will also allow air in, heat out. just ain't had time! |

yeah was gonna make it in a clear plastic (with a high melting point obviously) so you can still see the shiny shiny bits!
Any ideas about how hot it gets at that point? Perspex melts at 120deg C, polycarbonate starts to bubble at 140deg C Hmm, Think I've just had an idea! |

so if i have a problem with overheating, taking off the hood insulation will help with heat reduction or no.

yeah it should help mate, BUT you really need to find out why you've got a problem with overheating as it could be something serious
