Seeing as how my engine is at about 170k miles now and i think he valve stems are going bad im looking into getting a new engine. All the quotes on th valve seals were about 1.2k, and id rather just put that towards a new engine.
If i had a place and time to do the swap i would go with a 3s for sure, but i gotta have a car to drive cause my celi is my only car.

I was wanting to know the price of labor at a shop doing either a direct 5s to 5s swap, or how much it would be for the 3s.
I would eventually turbo the 5s,i just know its a lost cause on the one i have now.
thanks for any info biggrin.gif

I just got a new job, so i can finally afford nice stuff laugh.gif

Well up here in BC, the dealership quoted 17 hours of labours, thats 17 X $80 = 1360 (canadian money)
and i new short block, still obtainable, is roughly around $3211.

up here if you add all the taxes and everything its around 5500. hope thats helps.
damn thats alot, thats like the price of my car almost. frown.gif

valve stems or valve seals? valve stems you need new valves, and the head will have to come off. valve seals you can do yourself with the head on. using Toyo Tool. alot cheaper than 1.2k i bet like 1k off that price tag.

most shops are too dumb to complete a 3s swap. many have gone down that road and regret it.
a 5s to 5s swap is so easy, you might as well do it on your own, because a shop will charge you 1-2 grand in labor alone.

well, if you want to do a 3s swap but keep thet car running the 5s till the last minute, buy the the 3sgte set with complete motor harness, I have and obd 1 interior harness that u can buy from me for cheap, can be sent out to doc tweak to be made.....then when it comes back you can do the swap in a weekend..

I'd personally go with a turbo'd 5s over a 3sgte. Since you will be replacing your 5s before a 3sgte engine swap then you might as well just save ur pennies and turbo a low mileage 5sfe.

Ebay 5sfe

Im sure this engine will last another year, but i don't like turning on my car in a parkin lot and smoke comming out, kinda makes it look like a pos. kindasad.gif

Im sure exactly sure what it is, but as soon as i turn on the car, like half the time, it will puff out a huge cloud, and then stop after like 5 seconds. A shop told me it was valve seals, but that was a few months ago, so i may have the words twisted a bit.

What all tools would i need for the swap? I figured id need a cherry picker, i got a descent like 150 piece tool kit, and a craftsman torque wrench.

95celgt, how much for the harness? So basically i just have to have doc tweak mod it, and then there is a plug to the engine harness?

iv been swinging in between which engine for like 3 months, and im trying to figure out how much money and stuff i need to get.
thanks biggrin.gif

if its just you valves seals, and that is what it sounds like, then a $100 dollar tool (Toyo Tool) is all thats needed and the valve seals themselves. so maybe a total of a $130 bucks and a little labor. mechanics suck, if you were closer and wanted someone else to do it id do it for a quarter of what you would pay a mechanic.

Exactly like 95celgt. You will need to send the celica's original engine wiring harness with the uncut complete wiring harness from the 3sgte. Make sure that the 3sgte's engine wiring harness has all it's connectors so that the conversion has all connectors to make the harness plug and play. Dr. Tweak has done many toyota engine swaps and wiring harness including mine's so pm or go to his website at http://www.phoenixtuning.com for his email address and details of his work. Good luck.
