I just installed my new headers today (my gf bought for my birthday) and it took about 5 hours...All in all it was totally worth it. There is a huge difference in the way it sounds (much louder now) and I do notice an increase in HP.

Bolt was already missing when i took off the stock ones. They were actually studs with nuts on the ends so i wasnt sure about replacing it...
I did replace the gasket, both the top one and the bottom one. -------------------- ![]() |

you can get a new stud from the dealer for about $2 and the nut is about $1. Splurge and get them

Notice any difference with it? HP? Noise?
I'd only really want one of these for the looks and wouldn't want to wrap it, but I assume it's going to discolor badly regardless right? Can these really give that much HP gain? -------------------- ![]() |

Yeah i will go down to the dealer for sure and get those parts, thanks for the input on that...
I got these on ebay, the guy i purchased them from just so happens to have the same set up as me in the pic, the pic on ebay is not my car... I got these for 95+40 shipping. The only problem was the bottom 3 bolts that he sent did not fit into the stock pipeing. I did notice a HUGE difference in sound, car is much louder now. As for horse power, i noticed an increase. It seems to pick up faster now. I was considering wraping them, only becuase they get really hot. I read about some wraps and they say that they can reduce the heat. This true??? -------------------- ![]() |

That looks like california spec, because of the holes for two probes. I'm interested in one for my california GT, where exactly did you get it? (I know ebay, but what seller)

its not that bad to install yourself, just make sure you give yourself plenty of time, pick a morning, pick up some bolts, washers, lock washers, and nuts. i believe i got the 2.5" long bolts...another thing is buy a new exhuast gasket and hi temp gold sillicone..make sure you seal it really good around the downpipe to the exhaust...im not sure if that seller gives you a new manifold gasket either...that can be bought for 15-20 bucks as well. taking off your stock manifold ist that hard, just dont strip any studs. make sure car is cold...touching hot parts hurts. and i recommend wrapping the header because it gets very hot. throttle response is okay, in the begginning your car will sound weird (farty-raspy), that goes away in a week or so. it will make your car louder so be prepared to get looks.

does anyone know about how big a diff putting a new header on would make HP wise? other than it getting hot is there any other benefit of wrapping it?
i'm kinda thinking of getting one but not sure if it's worth it. especially if i am planning on a swap in a year or 2. also would this work on say...a beams? probably not but it's worth asking -------------------- |

yeah i finally got mine in the mail yesterday and i got it instale already. according to my ass dyno i think its definately good for 5hp minimum. the bolts that were supplied with the header are too big, but just get some smaller ones and call it good. the o2 sensor is a little tight getting on but it went. it was almost a little tricky getting the manifold on but it was just a matter of how you hold it to put it on. i would advise to loosen the alternator to make for just a bit more room to work. as for the sound it does sound a bit raspy but i love it. its louder than before and it gave my engine with almost 300,000 miles, a little bit more ummph. i do get a few more looks with the loudness but its all good.

To guys saying it makes the car louder, do you also have upgraded exhaust? I wonder how much louder it would be if you just had stock exhaust.

after you guys install new headers do you re-install your heatshield? or do you just wrap the pipes, or both?
i would probably go heat shield and wraps if not just for the fact to make it look stock. |

Yeah, it would be nice to be able to fit the heat shield back on as for daily-driving protection and for shows take it off and show them pipes.

Nice job on the install. I also saw this on E-Bay.
I'm interested in one but do you know if this is smog legal? I live in a state that requires emissions check. I see the header has ports for O2 but is there not a pre-cat on the OEM manifold?! Thanks |

Yes, you are right, so I'll reword my question to k-weaver.
Does your Toy pass emmisions? I see there are ports for the O2 & EGR. My concern is that the pre-cat is removed with the stock ex manifold, therefore would not pass emmisions?! Any comments or does any body else have a 5sfe w/headers and know about emmisions? My 4Runner has headers and it passes, but it doesn't have a pre-cat. |

![]() Also, in reference to the first big, O2 sensor, with the oval shape and attached by the two studs...well the hole on the header is not perfectly center between the two studs that the O2 sensor attaches on. After studying the stock set up, this is how it is anyways...there is about an 1/8" difference from middle of the sensor to one stud, and from the middle of the sensor to the other stud. These are just some preliminary observations before I actually install this very inexpensive header...but the quality seems to be pretty good. If I run into any other issues or find any other technical info to share, I will do that. And pics to be added once it is installed. One question: Should I expect any CEL code to be thrown, or will everything be okay as long as both sensors are plugged in? My impression is that although we are removing the pre-cat, it really only "covers" for the main cat under the car until it warms up and starts doing its job. So without the pre-cat, we are really only throwing unnecessary pollutants out for a little bit of time after starting the car. Let me know if I am off base. |

it shouldn't throw a CEL. I have the cali emissions engine and I couldnt get one of the 02's out of the old manifold, so I used the plug (that conveniently came with the header) and screwed it in the hole.
no CEL light for the missing sensor ![]() -------------------- ![]() The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed? |

nice set of headerz...jus like the ones i used to have....ur car do get louder, picks up much better and the chrome will start chipping off XD...wrapping it isn't necessary, its really up to u....no codes will b thrown and it won't pass emissions/smog but its pretty easy to take off and put back on(the sensor is a bi*ch to take out and put on). No you dont need to get anything welded but u do need to get some bolts...heat sheild won't fit coz the aftermarket headerz don't have the holes for tht screws to go into...if u wanna c picz check my profile of my baby b4 i got n a accident =(...
edit: forgot to mention after i had cai, headerz, cat bak exhaust my MPG's improved XD...went from 300mi/tank to 380mi/tank... This post has been edited by kenjamatic: Feb 13, 2008 - 11:40 AM |

QUICK TIP.... for anyone else that wants to install a polished header....if you do not use gloves when installing and then start up, your fingerprints will be burned into the header making it look ugly. If you do not have gloves to use, wipe the header down with rubbing alcohol just before startup......

I just bought this header and was told that it takes off the second cat. That's fine but for our cars the garage said it will throw off an immediate check engine light unless you got something that sends a false signal from that sensor. Does this really happen because I'm afraid to install it if I'm not going to pass emissions due to a faulty sensor?

I've had mine on for a few weeks and no problems yet. But I guess a select few have had issues, if you do a search on here. But you can erase the code later if you get the problem.
