Hey everyone. Who all here knows anything about, or owns an external hard drive? I'm looking to back up a lot of stuff on my laptop before I send it in for a repair. I would like to get all of my pictures, some files, and all my music (for my Microsoft Zune) off of my computer. Does anyone have external drives they would recommend? I'm not looking to spend a large ammount and anything at 100 gigs should be plenty adequate. I'm a newb in this area and would like to hear your opinions! Thanks!

I have an acomdata external, being using it for over a year and no complains, but if I were to buy another one I would go with one of those case adaptor and a regular hard drive, is just a case that adapts any regular hard drive to be use as external, that way you can just plug it inside your PC if wanted. for me that would be ideal but for now I'll keep my acomdata, I got it a year ago for US$90.00 at compUSA and it has 100 GB storage.

i have one of the case adapters and i love it fast (USB 2.0) and convenient. i can use it for my laptop and shove the drive in my home theater pc when needed. only thing i will say is. i killed my first drive my bumping it while it was spinning. so my guess is the external will have some sort of vibration dampening. hope that helps.

Netgear SC101T http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/554742/art...central-tu.html http://netgear.com/Products/Storage/Networ...age/SC101T.aspx It is dirt cheap, good quality and quiet. It takes two SATA disks which just drop in - no fiddly screws. It can do RAID1 across the disks so if one disk fails and you replace it before the other one fails, you won't loose any data. Gigabit Ethernet so transfers are amazingly fast. Dead easy to install and setup. This post has been edited by BloodyStupidDavey: Aug 12, 2007 - 2:53 AM -------------------- Davey

The prices for external drives have come down significantly. I was toying with the idea of getting a 500gig for about 120. It was a reputable brand also. Check Newegg.com for great prices.

i have just the case adapter were you can put any ide drive into it. while it was dirt cheap, i have to admit that i dont like it. it needs AC power, and USB to work. its big and bulky.
my friend bought a small drive made by SimpleTech. its much smaller because it uses notebook size hard drives and only needs usb power. he let me borrow it for a few days and i loved it. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

i use newegg for almost all my computer needs, great place to buy. western digital is my choice in HD, but i would stay away from the 250+ drives, I just dont trust them yet (my opinion.) I went with quad 120 sata drives in a raid 5. enough space for me, the more stuff you have on one disk the more you lose if that one disk fails. and even if its under warente you wont get your data back.
whats it going in for? whats wrong? can you just take your hd out and hold onto it? side note, I have a 60gig WD external drive, got if from my dad, its gata be 3+ years old, runs like a champ when needed. This post has been edited by creis: Aug 14, 2007 - 12:29 AM -------------------- ![]() |

My work supplied all of us with a mini external HD for the summer. I will check on the brand tomorrow morning, but it is tiny. Essentially a laptop hard drive in a case. I believe its 160GB. We've dropped it from standing height, dropped a Cisco Catalyst 2950 switch on it, and it still runs like a champ.

I'd go for a tiny 2.5" laptop hard drive in a case.
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.as...top-Hard-Drives + http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....amp;name=2.5%22 Or even go for a 1.8" one.. those are gonna be extremely tiny! Edit: OK I just saw your link of 500GB for only $118. I give up, that's a way better deal. -------------------- |

just bought the 250 gb elements by WD 89$ on newegg a few weeks back drive didnt get recognized by xp the first time i put it in. Then i run it under linux with no problems, then went back to xp and presto it was there. formatted it in under an hour and transfered 50 gbs over with no issues, drive gets a little warm but its design is really simple and seems like a good choice for being more portable than most 3.5" drives. i was happy with the decision.
