i live in California and as almost everybody knows , our emission laws are stricter than the rest of the nation .... so in order for me to swap my engine i will have to find somebody to look the other way and kind of pass it through the evil smog check ..... anybody here on the website lives in southern California and knows "a guy" that would do such thing .... because i been asking people that i know without any success ....

All FI set ups should run premium if not better due to detonation. No car, in california especially, will pass smog with any type of engine mods.

haha man, i must have lived in the strict part of Ohio, becuase i had echeck when i lived there and guess what? my car passed fine, but it won't pass now in Cali haha. I think it differs by county. I know Cuyohoga county has echeck, but recently they made it free of charge to get tested like 2 years ago or something. California has too many strict laws i want to move haha. Anyone know which state has the least amount of automotive laws?

it is because your car is not equipped with California emissions ... usually any car has more emission control in California than any other place in the US , probably the world ...

cause I got mine smogged in april and now I don't need it for another year and a half. I'm sure in a year and a half I'll want a different car by then, but if I don't, I'll rip everything back out and go take it to get smogged as an NA car. OR, if I'm too lazy for that I'm sure I can find a "guy", I have a friend right now actually who is taking classes to get his smog license.

btw, CelicaST_CALI, that's only happened once wink.gif

Please go into detail with this NaderG. I really do want to know the exact difference in parts the the Cali spec and the non Cali spec have. I believe that my car has everything on it as compared to the California spec, so i want you to tell me the exact difference please.

I think they have different ECUs. the 94-95 cali specs had 2 o2 sensors (all 96+ had 2 o2 sensors, cali and fed). There is a different part number for the EGR valve. 94-95 cali specs had 2 catalytic converters (all 96+ have 2).

in any case, a federal spec should still be able to pass california emissions if it's in good working order. if you failed, then there is something wrong with your car. if you post what your numbers were on the smog check I could help you figure out what is wrong with it.

Well , i think he gave you the information you need , you also said on another post that your getting low gas millage , so i think there is something that needs to be done , the fuel/air ratio is probably messed up , giving you bad millage and bad emissions , you should consider changing the O2 sensors , PCV and check your EFI and all the other emission goodies

before you go dropping money into stuff like that, you should really look at the number from your smog check. if you failed case you HC and CO was high, that tells you something... in that particular case it would probably be a misfire or that your timing is off. If you've taken the smog check (how else do you know that you failed?) just post the numbers up. I'm learning alot about diagnosis in my auto classes this semester, and one of the main things we've touched on so far is what each of the exhaust gasses mean.

not even close... if you don't fail visual (which you will) then you'll definately fail the sniffer. you better have some money to slip the guy uner the counter.

LOL, there is no legal way in California to smog a car with aftermarket FI. I believe its pretty much illegal to change anything correct?

But thats what happens when your state thinks that its a separate country. rolleyes.gif

Here in Nebraska I've never once had to take a car in for any kind of check. And there are some real pieces of crap driving around.

Here in Alabama nothing gets checked on our cars. Hell when you go get your tag renewed they don't even ask for proof of insurance! The only downside to living here is that you see the usual honda ricers and then there's the redneck pickups that are lifted sky high with no cat or they have snorkles for off roading. All in all it's a great place if you wanna do anything to your car and not worry about it tongue.gif

Nice nice, in massachusetts we get a safet and emissions check every year. Every other year they do an emmisions visual check as well... It really blows... its not too bad but with the 3s... sniffer becomes a problem if you start to mod out a lot..

The state has been cracking down and "adding" new testing measures every year. Most recently, in my area we're beginning to test the entire EVAP system, having to buy a special fuel tank pressure machine. Basically... swapping is almost out of the question.

anyone in nor cal?

Do0d I live in England as as far as Posh and becks go you got them and you can keep them.
You got Robbie Williams too.
England is sending all the really annoying people to California
There are a couple of tricks to help you just inch past a smog check.
I am from Cali San Jose east foot hills
Hell I am still a Sharks and 9'ers fan
Now I live in England I can say we have very tough smog laws cars here have to pass an MOT which is overseen by the police and VOSA
Explanation MOT=ministry of transport test
VOSA = Vehicle operating safety authority
The cops here car take a picture of you plate from 250 metres and pull up the day and time of your last MOT
No MOT no insurance
I have learned some nifty tricks for just skating through the emissions test
It will be harder for you in CA because your fuel is so bad. In the UK the lowest grade unleaded is 95 octane Super is 99-101 but we pay for it $8-9 per gallon
and even though it is so clean burning unless a car is basically perfect they will still fail, they check everything cat operation, Lambda, moisture content and Co2
We have still figured ways to scrape through even after decating a car.
First if it still has a cat then wrap it with heat shielding from the header to the cat keeping the heat in the exhaust will make the cat work better and burn any unspent hydrocarbons in the exhaust.
Add a bit of O2 to your fuel now a cheap way to do this is really easy and super cheap a little Rubbing alcohol 90% or better if you can get it 90% is available from most Longs, Walgreen's ect in CA any pharmacy use at 1% to the fuel no more then 3%. so 500ml to 50 litres or about 1 pint to 10-12 gallons
Halo plugs will cut emissions quite a fair bit and give you a bit extra power. www.haloplugs.com
Switch to a racing cat if you can.
Get your intake air as cold as possible best bet a front mount intercooler.
If you can get a front mount a good induction kit with heat shielding.
The best is Thermotec Cool It!
Remember heat is the enemy, So keep you exhaust hot and get it way from the engine fast
keep you intake cool spark cleaner and use cleaner fuel.
A bit of Moly will help with raising ring seals and improve compression just slightly enough to burn that tiny bit cleaner.
CA smog check is easy compared to an MOT I have a 20 year old Toyota Van, and a Jap derestriced Gen 5 Celica never failed an MOT, I have even had some Ford POS cars and they never fail either.
I deal with several shops that are VOSA registered testing stations and we know the trick to get highly modded cars through the MOT

Explanation MOT=ministry of transport test (every year) needed to buy very expensive road tax mine is £220 ($440) per year
VOSA = Vehicle operating safety authority
The cops here car take a picture of you plate from 250 metres and pull up the day and time of your last MOT
No MOT= no insurance, seize your car towed away and smashed big silly fine like £500 ($1000) plus court costs and towing fees 3-6 points on your lic. and possible suspension
