yes that is too much, our cars should be getting at least 28 mpg. i can go 400 miles on one tank in my ST given youre a GT it would consume a little more but not much. shift at around 2 to around 3. 4 is too high

I was thinking that too.. and I thought maybe I was just flooring it too much.. but when I put the new clutch in, i've been super easy and shifting around 2 - 3k .. still only got like 300 on a tank.. so IDK frown.gif

You need some injector cleaner and a good tune up. I push 475 constantly on mine, thats highway and city driving combined for about 50/50 each way. 87 Octane for that as well. I bet I could push over 500 if I ran the tank to half a gallon.

My GT with 164k miles gets me around 32 MPG to as much as 35 MPG (about 400 to 3/4 of a tank, I always fill-up at that point) depending on how I drive and where I drive to. When I bought the car I was getting around 26, but I did a tune-up, consisting of NGK copper plugs, synthetic oil change with a good oil filter, fuel system cleaner, and ran the car with Seaform (not sure if it really works or not, but after doing this plus everything mentioned above, my mileage shot up).

As far as driving habits, I shift at about 3k from first to second, then at 2.5k from there on. Also make sure your tire pressure is a consistent 32-33psi, that is one of the biggest factors in your gas mileage, as well as using A/C or lack thereof.

*This is with 87 octane. The advantages of getting 93 aren't worth the price difference.

if you want to lower your fuel consumption:

1. it's about drive style
2. you car must be lighter (no needless things in a trunk, etc.)
3. leaner tires... (I don know right English word for this however we call it "rolling resistance" between street and tire).
4. clean injectors...
5. better sparks + distributor (or lets say in perfect condition... not old, dirty, burned... etc.)

it works works any car...

profile is not important for fuel consumption... important is only width of tire

I too have thought about running my gt with only 3/4 to 1/8 full to shave off fuel weight.

I usually get over 400 miles to a tank (50/50 city/highway) with just putting in some injector cleaner every few other fill-ups, keep the tires at correct pressure and stay on top of my oil.

I changed up my driving style abit to see how high I can get it. If I see I'm gonna have to stop soon then I let off the gas and coast for a while. (noticed myself, family and friends all keep the gas down and then imediate brake. Why not use some inertia force here? tongue.gif )

Do all of you guys seriously only put 87 in your cars? I mean I know its an economy engine that can run on 87 but they'll run better with 92. And as far as price difference at 24 cents per gallon more with a 14 gallon tank we're talking like an extra 3 bucks per fill-up. I use 92 and I get about 400 to a tank, (I need new plugs and wires and a compression test, i think I can get more)

With my st coupe on 89 on an all highway trip, fill up before leaving and light coming on and off under a quarter mark I got 470mi on a tank... for daily driving on mine i get between 410-450 depending on city:highway ratios and 89 or 93 usage. I guess I should consider myself lucky cause I know my spark plugs are WAY due, small oil leaks, and 164xxx miles on the engine. I always keep my tires at 32(or try to at least) but I never switch gears under 3k, most of the time I'm downshifting to 3rd from 5th to get a little boost before redline to get around a slowpoke doing the speed limit or 5 over.... :-)

Seafoam's great. I use it about every 10,000 miles... About every third oil change. That reminds me I'm also due for a tranny fluid change.

I got 500 miles/tank on an all highway trip.

eh, a difference in opinion there about 87 vs. 92 grade if you're running stock motors...(shoot, low boost turbo motors can run safely on 87.)

I'm wondering what/how the weather affects mileage myself. When I bought my ST in July, I was averaging 400 miles to a tank, mostly highway but it was stop and go commuter traffic. Within the last month or so I've done the Seafoam treatment, replaced my fuel filter, changed the oil (put in synthetic blend), oil filter, spark plugs (to NGK platinum), cap & rotor and air filter. Still need to do the wires, I know. But since it's gotten cold (about 35 when I leave in the morning, maybe 40 tops at night when I leave work) I'm averaging like 360 a tank. Kinda disappointing.

Would cleaning the throttle body help any with this, ya think?

i've heard 2-3 ounces of actetone in the tank per 10 gallons of gas. it breaks the hydrocarbon molecules into smaller size for a complete burn. but i dunno how it would be on the injector or rings.

Acetone as in the stuff found in nail polish remover? I'd think that would be horrible for your gaskets and anything rubber, that stuff is really harsh on plastic/rubber. They even make non-acetone nail polish remover for that exact reason! (it like melts acrylic nails)

Hi all,

I am getting 600-700km per tank. (converts to about 370-430miles) I do city and highway, but my highway is usually in peak hour, so virtually all city driving.

I have been happy with that, but anything better is always welcome.

I'll try some injector cleaner and see if that helps, and my spark plugs are due to be changed (original and the car has done just under 70,000km's)

How big is the fuel tank of a 6th gen ? I know it says 60L but that hasn't workout for me. I had the fuel light on for a few K's. filled up and it only took 48L's. Another time I had a quarter left, filled up and it only took 34L's. Makes me think its a 50L tank.

I too have thought about running my gt with only 3/4 to 1/8 full to shave off fuel weight.

I think you misunderstood me. I always have a full tank topped off. I meant if I ran it down to 1/2 a gallon left in the tank that I could probably push 500.

QUOTE(tomazws @ Dec 14, 2007 - 10:26 PM)

FOUR SEVENTY FIVE? bowdown.gif

Heh, its not really that hard folks. If you learn to properly drive you should be pulling over 400 a tank in a ST easily. I had my buddies Eddie Bauer Explorer pushing 25 mpg on our last trip when he can only average 18. laugh.gif I dont think his onboard dash has ever read anything over 20mpg when he has been in it.

Its just understanding how much throttle is needed, when to let off, etc. Even if I pull spirited driving trips 3-4 times a week at night, plus driving in DC traffic I will still end up with over 400 every tank.

There is also no reason to run 90+ octane in a stock Celi. Sure its only $3 extra to fill up, but running that every day is just pointless. Now if every 5k miles you run 90+ to give a clean burn then thats one thing.

That's where I'm at on my 97 St202. Got 34mpg off the last tank.

Keeping the revs below 3k is the key.

Well I have a 95 ST and my buddy has a 97 GT and according to the Toyota owners manuals we have 14 gallon tanks. Dunno the conversion to litres off the top of my head.

Could it be 60L excluding things like baffles, fuel pump and whatever other hardware exists inside a fuel tank? I've never put more than 48-49L in my tank.

I once put 13.9 gallons in my 14 gallon tank. That was a nervous drive to the gas station. I've never shifted so low.

I put the courtesy door light bulb in my gas tank this morning to muffle its rattling noise.

Side note: somewhere on this board is a thread about MPG - I don't have half an hour to spend looking for it, but someone made a post about figuring out your mileage w/out having to know your tank's capacity:

Fill up once, drive, blah blah blah, fill up again and note how much gas went in on 2nd fill up. Divide number of miles, km, whatever on odometer by qty. of gas put in, and resulting # gives you your mpg.

I average 28 but since it's gotten cold I'm getting like 26. Gonna (HOLY CRAP THE SUN IS OUT!!!) clean the throttle body this weekend if it's not pouring and see if that helps a tad.

i'm getting about 250 miles on a tank... about 23-25 mpg... I think it should be higher since i don't rev it high often at all..... I need to do a tune-up and see if that helps..

i just checked mine, i'm getting about 19 mpg.
and it's mainly because i'm using a 'hot' thermostat making it run less efficient but helps the coolant heat up faster. an avg of 6 min remote start running time about 4 times a day (to and from school and work), and also because of all the snow i run over which is slowing me down a lot more.

Another simple way to increase mpg that seems to elude most people is coasting! When a stop light ahead is red, or you are approaching a stop sign, why not coast to it, insteading of keeping the throttle depressed until you hit the brakes? I observe far too many drivers zooming past me while the light ahead is red only to slam on their brakes at the end. I can only imagine how much fuel is wasted doing this.

you guys getting the low mileage what size rim and tires? on my other car i slapped some different rims and it threw off my speedo as i use my navi to determine my speed. my speedo was about 5 miles off goin 60, i think this makes a slight difference. though it is sohc civic i avg 33 mpg about 2k after a oil change.
lol i havnt gotten through my first tank yet on my celi

also when you fill up at the gas station put the number of miles you drove divided by the amount of gallons that was put in. that should give you the mpg

Consider driving at 65mph instead of +75 (which is considered slow here in CA). Also tail other cars like SUVs, trucks, and vans. Was watching Myth Busters the other day and you can increase your fuel efficiency by up to 35% depending how close you tail another car. I'm NOT saying you to follow 10 feet behind someone else, but instead of being the leader of every pack, consider being a follower instead. Even following 50 feet behind another car can reduce drag and save you ~5-10% on gas.

My drive up from LA to SF, I made it on one tank (400 miles) by tailing behind RVs and semis and going ~70mph. On the way down from SF to LA, I was rushing fast (+80mph) and I had to refill at 330. So yeah, it does make a big difference how fast you're going on the highway.

Plus I shift to neutral when going down steep hills (is this bad? idk tongue.gif ) and shift to neutral on red lights. It seems to help a tiny bit too. BTW, I'm on an auto 97 ST. Heh, doing this might not save me some gas, but it still makes me pick up more speed than simply coasting in gear...so idk smile.gif

actually, your better off letting your foot off the gas, and coasting in gear.
anytime your above 1500rpm, in gear, and not on the gas, there is NO fuel being injected.
coasting in neutral down a hill or to a stop your wasting more fuel (because your using fuel at idle) than coasting in gear.

Replace your plugs, wires, cap, rotor and air filter. Unless you are lead-footed and are accelerating hard from each stop, there is absolutely no reason you should only be getting 22mph on a 1.8. I'm not so lead-footed but I'm no granny either, and I'm averaging 28mpg this winter with about 75% of my driving in stop-and-go traffic. Tires are 215-40R17s with 226k on the body and about 100k on the engine. Intake and everything are stock, running on 87 octane (regular unleaded) with I think it's 10% ethanol (mileage-reducing kindasad.gif ) for the winter (required in our state).

IN the states most cars use 87... then there is 89 and 93. 93 is usually the highest you find at a gas station unless your near a race track where you can find 100 octane if your lucky

Keep your tires overinflated, tires should not wear weird with their construction, I drive my WRX with the tires around 36-38 psi(max tires pressures are usually around 40+ psi). Just have to keep and eye on thread wear.

Coasting to stop and downhill should will also improve overall MPG...I do it all the time.

BTW, I'm on an auto 97 ST.

actually, your better off letting your foot off the gas, and coasting in gear.
anytime your above 1500rpm, in gear, and not on the gas, there is NO fuel being injected.
coasting in neutral down a hill or to a stop your wasting more fuel (because your using fuel at idle) than coasting in gear.
wink.gif

THANK U!!! i always use to shift in neutral too and thought i was saving gas.....

Doesn't leaving the car in gear while coasting put unnecessary stress on the tranny?

Consider driving at 65mph instead of +75 (which is considered slow here in CA). Also tail other cars like SUVs, trucks, and vans. Was watching Myth Busters the other day and you can increase your fuel efficiency by up to 35% depending how close you tail another car. I'm NOT saying you to follow 10 feet behind someone else, but instead of being the leader of every pack, consider being a follower instead. the main difference I see is if I drive economically I get about 8.5 litres per 100km city and If I have a heavy foot I get up to 10.5 litres per 100km, freeway I get under 8 litres per 100km.

Ive been doing some experimenting on my car and the best i have come up with is 28.5 mpg. This is a mix of street and highway. I achieved this by driving 60 mph on the highway, it is really slow but i get decent mpg. on the street the car has no problem but once you drive 70mph gas just burns like no other.

My suggestion:

Drive 60-65mph, and set your **** on cruise control cause that **** does wonders!!!! werd

wow i didnt think it was the case but i did some googling and bam! it hit me source from popularmechanic q&a on a google search so it cant be wrong right? lol

Q: I have a question about fuel economy. If you are driving downhill, do you save gas by putting your transmission in Neutral and coasting, instead of having your vehicle in Drive? I think that you do but my wife seems to disagree. Can you give me the correct answer, so I can tell her that I’m “Mr. Right,” as usual?

A: That depends. The engine isn’t braking the car going downhill if the transmission is in Neutral, so economy would seem to be high. But if you think the engine is still using fuel while coasting downhill in gear, you’re laboring under a misconception. Most fuel-injected cars turn the fuel delivery completely off when you lift your foot from the accelerator. They still burn fuel when idling in Neutral, so do the math. The amount of fuel burned at idle over, say, a couple of miles of coasting downhill is small, but it’s still more than zero. So if you’re driving a modern fuel-injected car, you’re wrong.

Older, carbureted cars would suck gas through the engine while coasting in gear, even if you turned off the ignition switch. In this case you’d be right.

I drove my car to 425 miles on 13.2 gallons. Thats about 32MPG. I've gotten up to 35. I'm going NC on Friday, and that's like an 800 mile drive. I'll tell you what I get going down there. I'm shooting for 36+.

Also, I'm pretty sure our gas tanks are 15.9 gallons...

15% to be exact.

On my 4runner I was getting 15-16 around town, after the switch I was getting 12. Thanks you bureaucratic ***tards.

I'm averaging 22-24 on my GT with mods, but I also slide that car through turns and redline at least once a day.

Its amazing how the conditions you're driving in effects your fuel efficiency.

In my previous job, I would be driving 60K's one way to work on a freeway. Although the freeway resembled a car park often.

I would comfortably get 600K's out of a tank. The best was 840K's on a tank which included a long 2 hour one way trip up north on a freeway.

Now with my new job, I am catching the train and so only driving to and from the train station and around local on weekends.

Now I am barely getting 500K's on a tank!! Disgusting. Of course that same tank lasts longer now in absolute time, its just not as efficient.
