Having the front guards off my car I am trying to see what I can do.
have heard a a little about the resonator on our Air intake but have not seen or been told what is what yet. most of the info i have found says that the resonator is attached to the intake pipe between the TB and the Air Filter Box. I have removed this plastic container with one opening and blocked the hole on the intake pipe. could not hear much difference. now I am looking at the plastic box in the left hand front guard under the headlights? Is this a resonator or just a extended air box, what happens if we remove it and how easy is it to remove if so.

Nope.. that is not the resonator. The resonator I believe that everybody is talking about is in the stock air box and is connected on the tube between the throttle body and box. It is just a small box that recirculates the air so it would not make so much noise.

nothing bad will happen if you pull it out, your stock intake will just have a sound to it instead of being quiet. other than shedding a coupld lbs of weight theres no reason to take it out unless you have an aftermarket intake.

Alright so the one that I took off ages ago is the only resonator, Will take some photos of it for the future. I am using the stock box so I will leave the extended box in the left hand guard.

greeny assuming the setup is similar to gtfours its a resonator box, they arnt even a path for the air to go through, they are just kind of a port where the air can go, resonate around a bit then leave.
all it does it quieten out your intake note, uncool. And add weight, also uncool, f*ck it off man -------------------- ST205 Group A Rallye GT-Four, #61 of 77............600hp GT3582r

Depending on your model and year, you may have a small and a large resonator between the filter box and the throttle body plus this one. It is easy to remove when your car looks like that - two or three bolts hold it in place. If you remove it, the air flow to the filter will change very slightly and the sound your engine makes will change. Interestingly, the EPC shows an air-scoop style setup for the 2.2l model (2.2l model on the right): ![]()

Looking at the EPC I have removed "5" and "7" is the next thing. but it looks like it would get rid on "8" as well but looking at it I think "8" could be on 96+ because i don't have "10,11" ether. Will see if the guards are still off tomorrow and have a closer look. -------------------- Ok Gladys, lets play house, you be the door and I'll shut you.

I removed 5 and 7 as well. I plugged the 5 hole with an asprin bottle cap, fits fine and a little black spray paint does the trick.

Did the engine noise change apreciably when you removed the small resonator box (#5)? I have been thinking about drilling a hole and putting the box on my SRI to quiet the engine again. It is just too loud for driving any distance above 60mph. I may have to go back to the stock intake and put the large resonator box back in the fender, maybe drop a K&N or FRAM Airhog filter in there. Thanks |
