I havent been posting for some time now because I have been working on my engine project! tongue.gif

Its just about done and I am sooo freakin amped to get it up and running again!

I wanted to share my exploits with ya'll because I feel like you would be the ones to appreciate it...

so i spun some bearings a few months back and that is what jump started this rebuild. I stripped it down, cleaned it up and got quite a bit of work done...

-new pistons, rods, rings and bearings (oversized)
-Cylinder bore
-Deck cut
-honed
-crank; ground and balanced
-repainted block and valve cover and other various parts biggrin.gif
-complete valve job
-new valve seals
-head was inspected for wear
-new oil and water pumps
-timing belt
-new gaskets
-clutch
-most new hoses
-distributor
-sparks
-injectors..

I'm sure there is more but they escape me right now. But what was freakin awesome was that before the sparks, injectors, distributor and clutch.. I spent less that $1000!

This will basically be a brand new engine for less than a grand and really, the work isn't that bad!

I will be posting pix soon to show you guys what I've been up to, but i really just wanted to share it with ya'll while I'm getting through it biggrin.gif

Good Job. I feel like if I did this b4 instead of swapping I would enjoy my car better. Cuz I worked hard to make it run again.

I was playing around with the idea of cams, but that is something that I can always throw in later, so I'm aiming for summer time (next project biggrin.gif )

as far as compression, dyno and whatnot, I will be running tons of tests once its done to see exactly what it is that I have done here.

for now i just can't wait to get her running!

oh dude absolutely! There is some kind of pride you get from tearing your car down and building her back up.

not to mention you learn a helluva lot of stuff by doing it. The only thing that blows is the time it takes.

Wow that is purdy. I see how they really can't get that varnish off the round cam lobe part that gets that way when the valves are closed.

Reminds me that I need to send my spare cams off to Webcams at some point. But first I am installing a header and probably a SRI or CAI.

A little bit of a hold up.... I think the dude at the machine shop lost my oil pump bolts...

I'm going to be fair and say that it was a "miscommunication" and the bolts are now unable to be found...

that being said, anyone have a set they wanna send my way? or know a good place to get ahold of them? Auto supply places wont carry them would they?

while I'm waiting for the bolts to come in, Im spending my time getting everything back onto the engine so when I'm ready to put it back together, I will be all set (somewhat)

bolts are in!

I'm getting into the garage for a good night of work tomorrow night. Now that I have the bolts, I can finish the engine assembly!

That means I can bring the engine back to my car and start the finishing stages! I'm planning on taking the day off and asking some friends to come by so I can bang the install out in one day wink.gif I'm so amped!

and here are a couple of the culprits that lead to this rebuild...

IPB Image

you'll notice that there are no grooves on the bearings for the oil to get in. they are completely ground down.

i also found that i need a new idler and tensioner pulley, soo i gotta go get those.

hopefully i can put this thing back in on sunday, we'll have to see how it goes. wink.gif

Went to the garage on sunday morning, worked for a couple hours. took a break for rehearsal then went back @ 5.

I finished assembling the engine and only have the tranny left to bolt up.

so @ 1am we moved the engine to the garage where my car is.

everything is just waiting for the finish. I have rehearsal again tonight, but after that I will be there. Hopefully a couple more days of work and I will be done with this.

ok so heres a question... I know how to prime the oil pump, and i lubed up the cams.... anything else I should make sure I do before I start her up? (optimistic! biggrin.gif )

I would have more photos for you guys, but the batteries in the camera died, Ill have marty take more tonight...

to be completely honest, I'm really not sure. When I had brought the car to my machine shop, he said he had a connection and could get me all the parts.

hes done great work for a lot of people i know and he is one of the best machinists around so i trusted his opinion and didnt ask questions.

but no, they arent forged.

ok guys sorry for the wait!

ok so i finished her up and she actually started up first try. i was very surprised.

anyway, engine sounds great but I'm still having a couple issues, I have a speed sensor thats not working, I need to swap a motor mount (anyone got a spare front mount?) and an exaust leak.

The exaust leak will be fixed very soon but other than that shes ok. I'll put some pics up in a bit. she making me angry right now cuz she died in the rain and there is no power getting to anything now... Figure its a fuse, maybe you guys can help me out...

I told you to plug in the speed sensor, it's just not plugged into the top of the tranny.
The front mount is about $40 IIRC from toyota

I have a speed sensor thats not working, I need to swap a motor mount (anyone got a spare front mount?) and an exaust leak.

I told you to plug in the speed sensor, it's just not plugged into the top of the tranny.
The front mount is about $40 IIRC from toyota

The exaust leak will be fixed very soon but other than that shes ok. I'll put some pics up in a bit. she making me angry right now cuz she died in the rain and there is no power getting to anything now... Figure its a fuse, maybe you guys can help me out...

check the fuses and also check the battery cables and alternator wires.
All the grounds too.

i did plug in the speed sensor, its still not working. did check battery cables and alt wires (especially my "trouble" wire/plug.

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?

ok soo I went back into the wiring and went through everything.

every ground, ecu, fuses, relays...

I pulled out the good ol' multimeter and found a drop in voltage at the ground on the tranny. So when I went to unbolt it I noticed that it was pretty tough to move. Turns out it was all corroded from a certain amount of clutch fluid being spilt on it or something. So i cleaned it up, put on some corrosion protection and she started up...

weird thing is...

now my speedo works again(?)

i wont argue though, now all i got is that exhaust leak and the motor mount.

ill be posting some pics and some some sound clips once the exhaust is all set.

How much did it cost to get the crankshaft lightened and balanced? I heard that it usually costs about $1500

ooooo, I dunno man. I guess it would depend on the machinist and whether or not you pulled it out the the block for him.

-new pistons, rods, rings and bearings (oversized)
-Cylinder bore
-Deck cut
-honed
-crank; ground and balanced
-repainted block and valve cover and other various parts
-reassemble block

he did all this for $796.... I guess it just depends where you go
