I have only used Macs once or twice and simply didn't like the mouse and the different OS but I find a lot of people like them for graphics & what not.

All MS updates go through the normal ways, I don't know why people still get taken in with email update viruses because MS updates Windows constantly.

Okay, spinning wheel I can understand, although it's more of a short coma than death, as Macs almost NEVER crash since OSX was first released. Yes, overpriced. WAY overpriced.

Grey screen of death though? Come on... they don't crash! Oh wait, sometimes they don't do so well when they're running MICROSOFT programs! But GREY SCREEN OF DEATH!? Funny to me 'cause that's taken from the infamous BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH description of what was it, Windows 98? Still borrowed from a PC saying though! wink.gif

Bottom line is if you're a "gamer", yeah, it's PC all the way. But if you do anything even REMOTELY creative, Mac is the way to go! And if you just surf the 'net, then a cheap-o PC w/good virus protection is the best bet.

Mac viruses and exploits DO exist. Your not immune from anything.
The only difference is that most virus writers want to hit the biggest target ... windows. But with the growing popularity of the Mac, you'll start seeing more and more attacks.

U are talking future tense...i am talking past and now. There is no major virus out there that will cripple a Mac. Im sure there WILL be in the future but Macs are lightyears ahead of its competition and im sure they will come up with a solution before a problem arises. Macs have been "popular" for awhile now and im still waiting for that major virus to hit.

That is one virus that hit a mac. Comparably, pc's are much more prone to virus's, and get them alot more often. I am not saying macs are perfect becasue they arnt, My hard drive crashed over winter break this year and i lost everything....but everything is scanned that comes into my computer, and nothing gets through without being checked. I've been a PC user all my life until i got to school and needed a Mac. It takes a while to get used to it, and to know what you are doing, but after a while it makes using a computer far easier and faster than any pc. And btw, won't be long untill mac's are the new pc. look at vista for example.

Right now...Today... viruses for the mac DO exist.
The reason you dont see 50 of them being spamed into your inbox is because not a lot of people us osx.

You are right, you are less likely to run into a virus being an mac or linux guy, but dont think you are immune from them or that apple knows something microsoft doesnt.

That is absolutely true. It's just a matter of supply and demand. 90% of the world's computer users are PC users. Maybe that's slightly less now w/the increase in popularity for the Mac, but still - slightly. It's a VERY bad idea to get too comfortable or too secure about virus threats just because you're on a Mac. I've been using Apple/Mac computers since many of you were probably toddlers - I got my 1st Mac in 1991, but started actually using them in middle school with an Apple IIc!!! They're not immune, just not popularly targeted.

edit: just saw the graph above!

Macs rule X 1,000,000

The only people that say they dont, r the ones tht dont have 1. And mine was not that expensive and i have never had crash or had 2 just turn it off to retsart in 2 years of having it. But honestly its just a matter of time until viruses are aimed for Macs too.

^^ sorry, theres only so much you can talk about related to a new virus

btw, apples and oranges?? not at all. Both are computer operating systems that run virtually the same programs. I fail to see how they are that much different to the point where we can't compare them.

They are different in the way that they run those system and how well they run them. Also, because of this, they are better in some ways and worse in others. The reference comes from the fact that some people prefer apples to oranges and vice versa. some people like Macs and others like PCs.

Also, different fruits go better with certain dishes then others. You wouldn't want to drink apple juice with pancakes. the tastes clash. so by that logic, you wouldn't want to use a Mac if you are a gamer.

Thus the comparison

I have personally had horrific experiences with HPs.First i got a laptop and teh screen would go red if the screen wasnt in teh right area, then the thing would randomly hibernate...now it wont even start, so f*** it.Next i got a HP pc and within 3 days of having it the motherboard fried and the hp tech ppl acted as if it was all my fault.I struggled with them for literally 4 hours on the phone and they finally sent me a new one.And my mom also owns and HP and just yesterday her disk drive wont open or read anything...thanks Hp!!!

If you can get it online, see if you can DL a new driver for the DVD drive, probably from the Microsoft site since the driver pertains to the OS. However, could be the HP site since the drive itself is supplied (but likely not made by) HP. You should be able to enter your computer's model number and find out which DVD was supplied with it.

As for your shortcuts having ?s, it's because the OS isn't recognizing the filepath to the program their shortcutting to. You should be able to double-click the shortcut icon and relink it to the program. Otherwise you'll have to create new shortcuts and get rid of the bad aliases.

When I said earlier I had heard/experienced only bad things w/HPs, it was specifically w/their laptops. I have no experience whatsoever w/their towers. I don't even know if they still make towers.

Incidently Havok, apples go just fine with pancakes, haven't you ever had apples and cinnamon pancakes? They're tasty! Probably more of an IHOP special than a Denny's specialty though. smile.gif

amen

dual boot linux + windows and your set =)

as far as people being creative using mac's:

3 type's of people use a mac:
1. musicians
2. artists
3. unemployed/loser's (see previous)

i think macs are waaaaay too confined compared to pc's and wtf... how much money do you need to waste for 'proprietary' hardware.

again... linux>all

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Fbk52Mk1w

thats the old compiz - the new shibs thats gettin worked on for kde 4 makes that look like windows 3.1

and linux is free - and unless your loggin in as root - it doesnt get much more secure than linux =)

^^ haha dude, do some research before you talk. Artists, musicians, and unemployed losers? Just to let you know, all or most of the upcoming professions in anything technical are using macs. Maybe the unemployed loser users are the ones who can buy a desktop for 299. There might be a reason why macs are a little pricier. Try using one first

To me anything state of the art is awesome. I work in a media lab -> animation, video editing, graphic design. Most of the computers are upwards of $13,000. So whether it's mac / pc they still get the job done.

Ive never liked macs. id say that about 40% of the times ive used them, they've either locked up or crashed. For me its PC all the way. whether it be Linux or Windows both work fine for what i use. And for those that say multimedia programs work better on macs, i have NEVER had any problems with photoshop and any other programs that most go to a mac to use.

as far as people being creative using mac's:

3 type's of people use a mac:
1. musicians
2. artists
3. unemployed/loser's (see previous)

That's just plain rude and borders on offensive. Why do you have to make it a personal attack like that?

And what "proprietary" hardware are you talking about? You wanna talk about proprietary hardware, look at all the hardware out there that ISN'T Mac compatible. Other than Apple TV (which I think like NO ONE owns anyway), I can't think of any Mac hardware that's not cross-platform compatible. Maybe RAM, that's about it.

i think macs are waaaaay too confined compared to pc's and wtf... how much money do you need to waste for 'proprietary' hardware.

Uh - my HP Media Center m7160n just did the same thing. The DVD drives won't register and the icons for the shortcuts have ?'s on them now. kindasad.gif

Probably more of an IHOP special than a Denny's specialty though. smile.gif

yah, but something about the apple juice and pancakes dont mix to me.

maybe a better example would be orange juice and chocolate. You cant tell me thats not nasty

Oooh noez stealin mah magahurtz.

I find it hilarious people seem to have all these virus, trojan, malware, spyware and backdoor programs on their computers. I am an extremely confidant PC user and probably put mine to work more than a lot of people here, save a few. I'm an active torrent user, and have over a terabyte of music CD's, movies, PC games, programs....lots of stuff. I use many Peer2Peer programs. But if you were to scan my computer right now it'd be clean as a whistle.

I suppose I just find it funny that people still worry about phishing and 'computers crashing.'

Eh, sorry. Rambling elitism.

Or better yet - run xen, vmware, or parallels and have any os you want - all running concurrently.

lol at least someone got it

its an os, choose what you want! btw i didnt originally say the unemployed thing, i just thought it was hilarious.

macs are ok in their place for what you do. as with a fast car, it depends on how much $$ you dump into it to be successful. with enough cash you can have a computer that does pretty much anything, pc's just get there ALOT quicker and easier and inexpensive compared to mac's

as for linux, i use it cuz its a hell of alot faster than any worth while osx or windows on my laptop, and to game i just use wine and i can do anything.

im not up to date on my macs, i have the new leopard and its nice n all, but its just a watered down version of vista in my opinion. its flashy n all, but doesnt posess any real 'computing' capabilities (your still stuck with the confines of a mac instead of the freedom windows & linux gives you) so i dont use it other than to steal the genie lamp minimize effect to use in linux

entry level vs. entry level machines i think macs come across as more polished than most pc's

however, any kind of technical enthusiast would choose a pc since you can just do sooo much more to/with it
