Very much so. If you're not a chef do something easy like pasta. Get a good wine while you're at it. If you're not a wine connoisseur, just ask the guys at the bigger liquor stores, they usually have good taste.

Take these guys' advice, coming from a girl, they're right on the money. For girls (well, IMO girls of substance, that is) it's not about spending a bunch of money, it's about being creative and making the effort to let her know that you're paying attention and that you care. It's all in the details.

Go to foodnetwork.com for recipe ideas, I use it ALL the time because I always seem to need to go grocery shopping but never have any money or time... it's a GREAT resource to be creative with what you have around the house! You can search by ingredient or by type of meal or whatever. It's awesome!

Lastly, if you DO feel compelled to get chocolate - I might speak for myself on this one but guys, if you're gonna buy chocolates for a girl on V Day, go for quality, not quantity, and spend the money on a few pieces of REALLY GOOD QUALITY chocolate and skip the Russell Stover's, okay? That stuff is just nasty and unoriginal.

My ex got mad at me for wanting to do anything for Valentine's day last year. She says it's just a big cash grab and that guys shouldn't be expected to drop a ton of cash just because other people say it's THE day.

About the only time I saved money while going out with her. laugh.gif

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE! Of course, she's your ex now, so I guess it doesn't matter. But any girl who says "don't do anything for me" is either lying or cheating. LOL

Amen!

lol I love Valentine's day because i'm super romantic/cheesy... but then again my b/f and I are like that all the time so Valentine's day is 10x worse smile.gif

I'm cooking his favorite meal, got him a Duke University Shirt he wanted and a cool beer stein, a scrapbook of a trip i took him on and a little trip to good old VS... and a mini heart shaped cheesecake with cherries on top smile.gif

I cant decided on the fav meal, Crab stuffed tilapia or steak and lobster tail :-\ Or steak with a lobster bisque as an appetizer frown.gif

Then i made heart shaped brownies for his family and a mini cheesecake for my parents.

Yeah i think that's about it.

I am a chef (in my free time) and if you're gonna attempt a lobster bisque you better know what you're doing cuz its so easy to mess that stuff up. And if you can make a lobster bisque that can put mine to shame then you need to leave him and come down to Texas asap.

my 2cents...keep it simple. it doesn't matter what you bake, cook, buy, whittle or whatever. what matters is sharing a day, an evening or just a few hours with your soul-mate. no cellphone, no PC, no x-box. make the moment yours-- a meal, a movie, a favourite TV show or even a lights-down-low-full-contact-heavy-breathing-kissy-face hour on the sofa. all that matters is that you are together and the world revolves around your relationship. revel in each other. look into each other's eyes and express your love and commitment...
then jump into your 6gc and tear around the neighbourhood with the music blaring and the windows rolled down and laugh.

BTW i married my first true love almost 25 years ago and we are still crazy in love. it's not always been easy. we've had to deal with plenty of crap along the way. we have 2 beautiful children that are the fruit of our life together and they love us in return. if anything i hope they can remember us for one thing" "live, love, laugh - maybe not in that order but definately at the top of the everyday "to-do" list .

peace

Since my woman Catherine Zeta Jones left me... (LOL) My new love has a name.... Celica. We have been through thick and thin. No one can replace her. Yeah, there are many others like it, but this one is mine.

On a serious note though, Valentines Day is OVERRATED! But always a good excuse to find some chick with serious issues for a fling. I am not the kind of vampire to prey on such easy pickings, but I say it is something to try a few times until it grows old. I don't have a girlfriend and I don't need one. I would rather put my money into my car.

My bad, I thought this was about what everyone is doing. Okay, for you? Women can be into real simple things. So long as it truly comes from the heart. Seriously. Maybe just put your thoughts on hold for just a moment, and listen to the little things she mentions. The things that may seem unimportant might shock her that you remembered. So long as you make it something you both will never forget, no matter how great or small, I think that makes it all the worthwhile. (End Valentine Mode)

Okay, what the heck was that?

I agree completely with what your saying smile.gif Never been much of the romantic type, so I dont care too much for Valentine's (its just another commercialized holiday like all the rest IMO), but if me and my bf HAD to do something, really just be hanging out would be ideal enough for me - but also considering the fact that I only see him 4-5 days out of every 2 months, of course I'd wanna just hang out. lol

So as you can imagine, I'll be spending this one alone, but thats okay smile.gif He surprised me with a Wii that I've been dying to have since forever so I'll curl up with that laugh.gif

I am, as usual, broke as a joke. And so's my g/f. I don't know what she's got planned for me, she's been unusually quiet about today so it's anyone's guess... but as for me, I've tapped into that really expensive-ass piece of paper that says Fine Arts Degree on it (that very same piece of paper that is currently prohibiting me from enjoying any tax-return action) and made a whole bunch of origami hearts and wrote little love notes on it then scattered on the bed for her to find when she gets home from work before me. I totally don't suck at cooking, so I think I'll spend some quality time at work attempting to make origami roses and present them to her when I get home tonight, and then cook a nice dinner. I'm thinking salmon.

my gf's birthday is tomorrow so I feel you shin. Taking my gf to a nice seafood/steak place on the beach and got her orchids for today( her favorite flower), and a necklace for tomorrow with some homemade cake.

I've noticed that even if what you do for her doesn't turn out right, it's the thought that counts. If you make her dinner and it makes you both want to lick your toilet, she'll still be happy you tried and you'll laugh about it afterwards.

I hope everyone has a happy valentines day!

Flowers........$40

(My fav thus fare)

At any rate. me and my wife are broke, so im waiting till Saturday after i get paid and we going to get Star Pizza( for all you houston people, its good stuff) and then Ice Cream at Amys Ice Cream(Also good stuff in houston). Also we dont have the child to tag along with us so that also a plus.

other then that im going the easy route. Chocolate. the romantic thing doesnt work on her though. Paper Hearts would just make her mad because we would have to clean it up later laugh.gif

besides, when you have a kid, and you get a break from them, you really dont want to do the romantic thing. you want to go home and take your frustrations that that child presses upon you everyday by.........having angry mommy and daddy time laugh.gif

haha had to change my plans..

she woke up earlier than i did (5:45 am, WTF?) so no wakin up with flowers.

not to toot my own horn but BEEP BEEP my lobster bisque was amazing! :-D

I've never cooked so many things at the same time, it wasnt that hard because my dad installed another oven in my kitchen.

I didn't realize the lobster had to go in the pot with the water, white wine and fish stock while it was still alive, so i was sad when i had to do that... i got over it fast because Larry was delicious.

When i got home from work there were roses all over my room, boxes of candy. There was a note that said, "I love you but your room is messy maybe you should make your bed." Under my pillow was a box with this in it.

Then he did the dishes :-P.

smile.gif I wish i took a picture of how the table was set it was so pretty with my roses and little heart shaped candles.

She loved the origami hearts I left for her and like last year, I bought her a living plant because I kinda like the idea of giving a plant that will continue making flowers rather than giving flowers that are gonna die. When we moved into our house, she really started wanting a flowering fruit tree, so last year for V-Day I got her a weeping cherry tree (that looks great in our yard and is doing splendidly, I might add!). Yesterday I got her, I don't actually know what the hell it is, some kind of flowering hydrangea-looking plant. She got me a single red rose, a fabulous variety of really good dark chocolate, and took me out for dinner.

But still, if I could have, I'd have done the fabulous-jewelry-under-the-pillow trick. That's awesome. So now I'm just gonna do it at some random, non-holiday time when I can afford it. smile.gif

Dude is she into goldfish? I don't care how nerdy this makes me, but I breed goldfish for a hobby. I have black moor, ryukin, and ranchu. There is a website much like this one for interest in goldfish. kokosgoldfish.com

this had to be my most extravagant valentine's ever....

i got her a "heart cuff's of love" by IDX-change $60 (dunno if you've heard about it but its famous in hollywood and all the celebrities are wearing their jewelry now, check out the press section on the link)
plus the usual card and rose $20

we went to Frenchy's Bistro

check out the menu....we each ordered alternating food to try everything.

Valentine’s Day Celebration
Thursday February 14th, 2008 from 5pm

MENU

First course
Marinated Bulgur & roasted root vegetables
Or
Norwegian smoked fish plate, potato vinaigrette

Soup/Salad
Bouchot Mussels soup with Saffron
Or
Organic greens with goat cheese toast

Main course
Grilled Escolar from Fiji, natural with olive oil & herbs
Or
Roasted Pork prime rib on the bone, Truffle sauce
Dessert

Valentine’s Duo
chocolate timbale and heart shaped marshmallow upon warm chocolate fudge

heres the big nut shrinker............
Sixty-five Dollars per person plus taxes & gratuities.

dinner came out to exactly $165.48. it was so wierd eating fine dining. the first course could only be described as birdseed (Bulgur), i was too afraid to ask for ranch dressing on my salad and had to settle for the light vinaigrette, but the prime rib was to die for. im so glad im not one of those people that do this kind of dining daily, ill stick to sizzlers and chili's thank you very much.

saw "jumper" afterwards. $10 <-cheapest thing hahaha

i guess the best part was that we didnt have to wait for anything. (cept food). we got restaurant reservations ahead of time and got seated right as we walked in. we also picked up movie tickets in the morning so that it wouldn't be sold out. there was a long line at the box office when we arrived so even that was a quick walk in. so many valentine's days have been ruined by waiting hours to get seated or movies being sold out. all in all i think i gave a pretty good pampering tongue.gif
