So when people compete on sound systems they measure the decibal (DB) level of the car to determine the winner. This got me thinking...

When they measure the DB in contest how exactly do they do it? is it just with a microphone in 1 place or a couple in 2 or 3 places in the car?

Has anybody here tested their system to see what kinda numbers they have gotten? if so where and how?

well i do competitions with my car and with 2 12's and 1200 watts i was doing a 145db at the head rest

most competittions use only one mic and it depends on the mic as to if it is a actually mic or a sensor, also the defferent orginizations have deff mic placements in the car some do it at the dash or in the kick or at the head rest or even some have a class for db reading in the port and then again some do it from a few feet away from the car it all depends

well basicky itssteve broke it down lol depending what mic you use will have a vast difference on your number the best mic out their is the TL use for all pro comps. but u can pick up a boom stick and talk into it and post a 155 lol i system is not done but i am going to run a wall with 4 15's with 750 watts each and i would guess i would post around a 150-151 with a lillte tuning the most common placement for the mic is on the dash in the middle stuck to the window if its in the kick it will read a little high than the dash never had it in the head rest or the port. but i know i have seen one 10 on a few hundred watts do 160 DB in the port lol and 180 DB's is the same as a TON of tnt going off from 15 feet away... 145 will kill a cat lol ya that was a bad day... RIP fluffy.. wow i still feel bad about that!

lol ok ill try to put what happened in words.... here it goes
ok so me and my roomate in college opened a car audio shop in his small town and we sell small stereos to kids all the time never make to much money if any at all. and we get board and buy random cheap subs just to se how loud we can make them and we are in college so we are broke 98% of the time so we done have a TL or anything so we were looking up way to tell how load you are and came acrossed the cat method lol and its said that the amount of pressure created by 145DB's can kill a normal house cat and we are like hell yes!!! woot woot (my roomate lived on a farm with 10000 cats so trying this was no big lose) any ways we decide to buy 4 maxx12's from lanzar and wire them to 1 ohm and run them on 500 watts each so 2,000 watts rms and build a box tuned to 35HZ and get it all put together and its cat hunting time lol we seriously looked for over an hour to find the most worthless cat on the hole Fing farm and we found one just licking cat poop from its nasty mangy butt and were like bingo!!! so we go get the cat and put it in the car and turn it up and the cat just meows alot and jumps around so were like crap... now what?? then like a sign from god get a call from one of the kids who stereo we installed saying their is a comp that weekend in a near by town using a TL so we head up their and run the car and post a 144.6 and were like he that's really close to 145 why did that cat not die!!! lol jsut joking about it and what not and then for a second run we messed with the amp and settings and we decided to just blow the subs so we turned the RCA voltage up to 6v rms and ran it again hit 144.7 (one tenth better) but the subs didnt blow they took it so we got back home and thought about what the site said (can kill a normal HOUSE cat) so we were like o duh!!! house cat! and run into the house and look for a cat having like 10 cats in the house and 5 of which were born a few weeks ago so we thought that would be the best way to go so we took the cat and put it in the car and turned it up and it did the same thing as the out side cat and we were just pissd at this point so he runs the cat back inside and we just mess around for a few hours messing with some boston 8 in house speakers and he ran in the house to get a pop and then i hear him scream Don come quick u have to see this!! so i run up their and its the cat and its making this god awful sound and its spinning around in circles and then i **** u not just falls over dead..... and thats how we killed a cat... we buried it and every thing and said some words so dont think we are heart less cat killing animals! lol
