brakes were easy install until i broke two bolts above the heat shield that needed to be drilled out.

This is the season opener for me. Too bad the rear brake looks bigger than the front kindasad.gif time for new front brakes!

nice job thumbsup.gif

just make sure the shield is secure with all 4 nuts or else you might get a rattle/vibration from it.

definitely.

i have yet to put it back. i have to drill a bolt from there too. biggrin.gif

i should've used my liquid wrench first. i broke 3 bolts with my small ratchet not even the 3/8". i didn't think it had the torque. i guess i should stop eating my wheaties.

wanna tell me more about them?

i read around that i should stay away from slotted and drilled for my application - daily driver, periodic hard driving.

i'm still deciding if i should go 2000+ gt-s front or 94-99 GT front.

i use em on a daily driving application, and i'm telling you that *PERSONALY* i think it's a must have. Your breaking power increases 200x, and in the great big ass city of houston; on the streets with the crazys out, you never know when you need to go from 60 to 0 in 3 seconds or less...

not to mention (as soon as i get rims) they're one heck of a piece of eye candy tongue.gif Yummy~

*EDIT* I'm not referencing the R-Word. I'm legitimetly talking about crazy old ladys that do 45+ in the wal mart parking lot in their GINORMUS SUV's then get on the frwy and SLAM the breaks. lol. I hate those people...

Not to mention construction on the I-10 frwy, there is a wreck with construction vehicles every day. Mostly because of Texas lenient drinking laws. And construction workers dont give a crap when they're swinging these monster rigs into a frwy.

drilled/slotted are great for hard driving like a track or x cross but for daily driving they lack the surface area to the pads to give good daily stopping power. I had drilled rotors, maybe they weren't quality, I don't know, but they sucked. I switched to bembro blanks and the difference was clear. The drilled looked way better IMO but I didn't want to risk not being able to stop for looking good.

okay, alot of companys make em' slightly thiner than your standard rotor, so that durring high speed aplication there is no risk of rubbing onto the pad and preventing any velocity loss. but that's why i got the one's i got. They are not thiner. I forget the name of the company, i'll have to get it for you, but that is true. Some are not designed for daily application.

like I did say I don't know how good mine were, I don't think they were good quality.

There are great brands that are drilled/slotted but I had a bad experience with them so I'm a little biased against them smile.gif

I'm sure good quality drilled/slotted rotors would be better than blanks but for the $ and my use, blanks do me just fine.

what brand are those ? how much were they ?

I gotta look at the box. lol. I dont remember every brand i buy. tongue.gif

But it's not all about quality though; it about function; and what you want them to do/what they're used for.

Track guys want them to be narrow, because they dont need the break untill it's down to the last second, then they want to stop in an instant. So they want narrow.

We drive every day, so we want a more broad range of stopping degree. So we want a wider caliper.

It's not that you got a poor quality product, it could be that you had a product for the incorrect application biggrin.gif

I'm trying to find out where to go to buy bulk, us I'm trying to start a Houston Group Buy for these baby's~ wink.gif

X-drilled + slotted = no good

Powerslot rotors = good

laugh.gif I've never ever heard about making a skinny rotor for track use...thats ummm dumb...they would warp in an instant.

Drew, get a GOOD quality slotted rotor + some quality pads and you'll love'm for daily driving. I use Hawk HPS pads + Powerslot rotors on a daily basis and pretty happy/no noise.

good job on the conversion.

not skinny, just a few mm thinner or something like that..... I'll get ya some info on brand names and some websites when i get home; i dont have those links on my work CPU. But it's made thinner than your regular rotor. I'll show ya later.

EDIT: X drilled? like drill holes in an X shape? lol, if you put too many more holes in em there wont be any rotor left to stop the car!! laugh.gif

you could but it would be very expensive. I just kept watch in the buying/selling forums here.

I got my rotors from nopi - brembo blanks.

and X-drilled i think he means cross drilled.

yes, as stated. Stay away from Drilled rotors.

Stick to slotted and thats it.

BTW, how much did the rear conversion run you. Looking at doing that in April.

I need help! How hard was it to get the old drums off? I'm in the middle of the conversion but the drums are stuck on there. Do you really need the e-brake cable from a gt? From the outside (haven't been able to pry the drums off) the cables look exactly the same.

try taking the bolts out of the calipers and screwing them into the holes on the front of the drum.

im not sure about the cables because i had gt cables connected already.

and a lil ot... i had my disc conversion done last summer. but i finally fixed my e-brake a couple days ago. old shoes were worn down to bare metal. it feels nice walking away from my car and not wondering if i put it in 1st gear everytime i park.

this is close to the how-to so i'll put the quick version:
  1. remove tire
  2. remove drum (use caliper bolts)
  3. remove bolt that holds brake line to strut
  4. use extension to remove spindle bolts (thru holes in spindle)
  5. remove backing plate (I just let the whole thing sit on the ground)
  6. put disc brake backing plate, new o-ring 90301-63006, and spindle (can use one from drum brakes) on using same method to take off
  7. put rotor on, making sure ebrake adjustment hole aligned with the biggest hole in the spindle
  8. put caliper mounting bracket on (torque plate?)
  9. put caliper on (don't forget the pads 04466-20020)
  10. replace brake line with new brake line (ss braided brake line - woohoo!) so get a bucket and newspaper
  11. adjust parking brake - try turning the wheel and clicking the gear (screwdriver in, hand up) on the inside with a screwdriver. (hole should be on the bottom) when you can't turn the wheel freely turn the gear backwards (screwdriver in, push hand down) 8 clicks. place rubber plug - 47491-22020 - in hole.
  12. repeat 1-11 for both sides (a dur)
  13. (the same lines can be used - thanks for letting me know AFTER i broke three bolts laugh.gif laugh.gif ) remove e-brake lines and replace with new lines.
  14. remove heatshield (use liquid wrench/pb blaster)
  15. remove ebrake line mounting brackets (be veeeerrrryyyyyy careful, i broke mine and had to drill - use liquid wench pb blaster) then unhook lines from equalizer bracket (pulls both lines uniformly)
  16. bleed brakes
  17. done underneath, now go adjust ebrake cable on the inside (only if not between 4-7 clicks)
I have to change the other how-to to include adjusting the parking brake by clicking the adjustment gear. Coomer hasn't approved the other change i made stating to use a solvent on the ebrake line brackets.

Let me know if you have questions or if anything is out of order wink.gif .

i have some 7th gen gt-s calipers. get whatever rotor and pads you wish.

where'd u get you calipers? do you have the mounting brackets?

to my understanding I need new:
  • rotor
  • pads
  • caliper
  • caliper mounting bracket

I gotta read culpable04's thread again. my main question I want to know for a fact is whether or not these brakes will fit under the 15" 2000 celica GT rim. I think after 2001 celica GT used the same 10.8" rotor.

Sadly the ST e-brake cable is about an inch longer than the Gt cable and has a slightly bigger end piece. I suppose it could be used with a little bit of modification. I finished my drum to disc conversion today but it took me soooo long. The first drum came right off once I used the caliper bolts but the second one had rusted and the threads in the two little holes were toast. I spent about an hour trying to pry it off before I finally took a torch to it biggrin.gif . That finally got it off. Now I just need pads. The discs look a lot better and i plan on getting some 7th gen front brakes so it'll stop on a dime.

and i can check on if they will fit... ill measure how far out the calipers stick then you can gauge what size wheels you would be able to fit
