a 3s-gte swap may pass emmisions, but only if its in perfect running conditions, and this all depends on where you have it tested.

for instance, a rural area might have lower emmisions standards than a urban area

and please refrain from typing in caps, its annoying and infers that you are shouting

A USDM 3S-GTE WILL pass smog...

A JDM 3S-GTE will pass as well... but only if you can get past the visual...

California is not stupid... there are reasons for these laws... you wouldn't imagine how bad smog is over here... Just last week... I was driving through a town near San Diego called Temecula, and I was literally driving through a thick patch of smog... it was if I was driving through smoke caused by fire...

If you wanna call something stupid... call NATURE stupid for creating these stupids hills, mountains, and valleys...

Man... even if I quit smoking, I'll still be f'king up my lungs breathing in this polluted air...

The Toyota Caldina. In the real world, a ST185 GT-4. I have heard this is the most practical engine(clip) to put into a 6GC.

if you can somehow figure out how to get an EGR valve on a JDM 3sgte, do that and you should pass just fine. your in cali so u have the visual inspection. i.e. the smog guy looks at the engine and makes sure the parts that are supposed to be on the engine are on the engine. (the guy might be a dumbass and not notice, but that is prolly not the best thing to count on) The guy will not know that this isnt the right engine that is supposed to be in the car, so dont worry about that. problem with a JDM engine is there is No EGR valve. dont ask me what that does, cuz i dont really know, i bet Ray knows. A USDM mr2 turbo or Celica alltrac engine will work just fine. only problem is those are older engines and i dunno if they work with OBD-II, does anyone know for sure? If you have a 96+ you might just need an OBD-II (On Board diagnostics system 2) test instead of an actual smog test. and of course, the good ol' bribe usually works too, or if you can somehow get "buddy buddy" with one of the guys working at the emissions center. i would suggest doing the swap right after a smog test, cuz that gives you 2 years to figure it out.

hey thanks for all the info guys!! i have on more question what car do most of the people that actually do the swap get their engine from? and Ive herd people say to get it from the mr2 because its cheaper to get the enigne and all its parts but than i hear the same thing about the 5th gen celica engine so which car would be cheaper and easier to get its engine from?

i'm pretty sure it's easier to use the 5th gen celica engine because u dont have to get as many parts as you do w/the mr2...at least thats what i've heard.

the smog tech guy will only look at the stickers saying what your car has(they are on the underside of the hood) then checks for a cat and egr.

it will actually be east to add an egr to a jdm engine. it wouldnt work, but it would still be there

and then he hooks up an rpm sensor and sticks the probe in the tail pipe and revs the engine to two different rpm's, or speeds if its the test center that uses dyno's

i went to the emissions center with my jdm 3sgte swap. drove right in, they check my gas cap, then i rolled onto the dyno. i had to pop my hood cuz my cig lighter dont work. 3 emissions people all look my engine up and down(i dont know why ether i dont think they were looking for egr) . then did the probe in the tail pipe and reved my car. and then i passed with flying colors and was on my way.

that's a good point but your insurance will probably double if you tell them you swapped in a turbo engine.

so dont get in an accident

Well, if your motor gets damaged... they'll pay for a new engine (if necessary)... and you could use that money to buy a new clip or what not. A new engine from the factory will probably cost just as much as a 185 clip...
