Before the haters start with the "no rattle can" song and dance just let me be the first to say - very impressive. I would have thought the blurple color would have been damn near impossible to rattle can well.
I'd let you paint my sh*t. I'll be watching this thread. What's playr doing for you?

IC - sweet. And how do you get this stuff?

there are places online that you can get it from, as well as good paint supply shops.
i have a local shop that can mix up any factory color for me, last time i got one it was ~25$ a can.

That's totally worth it. I wonder how stock my color really is [it's already an Acura color but I mean how stock it was mixed w/e - I know very little about paint obviously]

looks good but there's nothing worse than having splitters and skirts (that you paid some good $ for) not being the exact same color as the rest of the car. Been there, done that frown.gif

pony up the $ and get them painted professionally by a shop, you wont be dissapointed.

wetsand 1500 and buffed used turtle wax premium rubbing compund

don't worry about messing up the paint, buffing will make it have that flat look and looks great.
here's the links i used

http://www.carcraft.com/howto/926/photo_01.html
http://www.paintscratch.com/spraycan.htm#shine

cliff notes on color sanding
-wetsand (i used a spray bottle) with 1000-2000 (depending on orange peel) until paint is uniformly dull
-just make sure to apply enough clear coat and not sand your color - only flatten the clear coat.
-remove dirt often
-use soft cloths such as terry cloths / old t-shirts / microfiber to apply medium duty rubbing compound
-just look at the links - there's lots of pictures. tongue.gif

I've always been told to not use primer in cans since they tend to make coats that are too thick.
Anyone can confirm?

first i will say that this is one of the nicest rattle can jobs that i have seen! GJ

i am going to try to answer some questions that were asked earlier though-
Every high end paint job and most lower ends are sanded after clear coat. its like leveling out land, there are high spots and low spots but you want it all the same level, so you take down the highs to get them as close to the low as possible-the highs and lows are the orange peel. then when you buff it helps heat up the clear coat to sorta of melt and close up the fine scratches left from the paper. be careful though because you can burn through the clear and paint if you get it too hot or do it too soon after drying

spray can primer CAN be as goos as regular "pro" primer and in fact you can get the same stuff that the pros use in rattle form-dupont- as far as the thickness...as long as the underlying layer is covered..stop. they make spray filler and high build primer so i dont think that rattle can will get much thicker if at all...in any case the primer needs to be sanded anyway to take away any orange peel from it so you have less transfer though to the color and clear, also to get rid of any waves, so even if it IS thicker you will reduce the mill thickness substantially by sanding..sorry if i hijacked, but i feel that there is alot of fog surrounding painting techniques and practices

Coming in 2010

full paintjob - new wheels - modified body - new interior - engine build- marriage

i like to finish sand for base clear jobs with 6 or 800, depending on what im doing, and yes i always seal whatever im painting.
i use black (or dark grey) sealer alot, and of course white when doing white. (you can mix the 2 to get various shades of grey)

thats the same craftsman i use in the garage.
its a 26 gallon, i cant remember off the top of my head the CFM, but it will run a normal gun just fine, with an HVLP it struggles to keep up.

nice little kit purple, the finishline setups are nice beginners setups at a resonable price.

ok that one runs about 300 - 400 bux. So that would be a starting one for me. I am not planning to paint whole cars. Just little parts to learn.

Pressure, do you have a single stage? is it this one purple?

omg. it'll never have to refill...EVER that thing is huge!

If it REALLY was go big or go home a LOT more people would have these:

or at least something like it. But I guess I'd go for bang for the buck vs usage time.

^^^ I use the exact same lift but different color at work, if I could fit that into my garage I would buy it serious too but I'm looking at a compressor thats garagable if thats a word lol.

The lift with the arms are better (I don't have a pic though sorry) though so you can take off your wheels too and its smaller. smile.gif

33 gal is good too just that I want a compressor with a cfm of 9+ thats under 1k because I plan on using it to spray cars and such I don't have deep pockets I just want a "strong enough" compressor that meets my requirements and goals.

presure - how long does that 26 gal last while spraying before you have to wait for the tank to catch up?

a couple minutes.
it comes on at anything under 120psi, and fills to 150.
so it runs pretty much the whole time once i start spraying, unless im doing somthing where i can stop and let the compressor catch up a bit. if i spray continuously (like when i did jims hood) i could hear it start to fall off a bit as i was making my way across the hood with the clear.

IIRC this compressor was what, ~300$?
if i were buying a compressor today, i would have plunked down the extra cash and got the monster 80 gallon 2 stage from home depot (IIRC they are ~5-550 or less) or better yet, search the local used boards (craigslist ect) for a good used unit.
IMO more so than how many gallons it is, its all about the motor, and how well it can keep up with your demands.
for painting, you need as high a CFM rating as your wallet will allow.
