I have had quite a time trying to put together info on swapping a 4age motor into my ST. I am still a bit foggy about most everything so I figured I would start a topic to try to keep it all together. Now,,,,

The 4age and the 4agze will both drop into a ST like a 3sgte will drop into a GT. The question is, which engine is better. Also, I would hate to be laughed at about this, but I wonder if the 4age would shred my automatic transmission. The way it looks, I could be driving with a 4age for about $1500. How far off is that?

depends which one you get. Here are the differences.
4AGE:
Yr. 95-Current 20 Valve, Twin Cam, 4 Cylinder, Quad throttle bodies, 1587cc FWD. 165 Hp at 7800rpm Torque: 16.5kg.m at 4800rpm
Yr. 91-95 20 Valve, Twin Cam, 4 Cylinder, Quad throttle bodies, 1587cc FWD.160 Hp at 7400rpm, Torque: 16.5kg.m at 4800rpm.
For the 4AGZE:
Yr: 86-89 1587cc, Twin Cam, supercharged, 4 Cylinder, RWD, 145hp at 6400rpm Torque: 19kg.m at 4400rpm
Yr: 87-91 1587cc, Twin Cam, supercharged, 4 Cylinder, FWD, 165hp at 6400rpm Torque: 19kg.m at 4400rpm
Yr: 91-95 1587cc, Twin Cam, supercharged, 4 Cylinder, FWD, 170hp at 6400rpm Torque: 21kg.m at 4400rpm
I don't think that it would shred the tranny. Also you said that you could be driving for $1500? Does that include the tranny? Cuz I could get you a 91 4agze front clip for $2500 shipped

there was one guy I was talking to that said he got the 4age clip for about $1000. that's like wow, but he said it only put down like 140hp at the wheels. I know I know, 140 on a 2400 pund car is great, but I wan't to destroy all. I want at least 200 at the wheels. Also, if you want the agze, just go to http://www.adelaidejap.com.au/toyota.htm they claim to have em.

y
ou can do over 200 on a 4a easily, but just a streight up swap wont get you there.... you need to beef it up a little bit....

4AGZE came to the US in the form of the MKI MR2

also 200 at the crank can be achieved in a JDM 4AGZE with a simply pulley upgrade. ahh the wonders of forced induction.

I had heard that the pulley upgrade was discontinued. I know you could have somebody make it, but you know... I wonder how much power 4age would make with all of the toysport upgrades?

Does anyone know how much a 4agze front clip, overdrive pulley, and intercooler would cost to have it swapped in an ST? Total costs, I mean, labor and parts, everything.

I have a couple 4agze front clips for sale. here are the specs. Total price is without shipping.
I have no idea how much the labor would cost. I'm sure that you could get some of your friends to help you. Just find somebody that has an engine hoist. And buy yourself some manuals. Not chiltons though.
Here are the specs:

Yr: 91-95 1587cc, Twin Cam, supercharged, 4 Cylinder, FWD, 170hp at 6400rpm Torque: 21kg.m at 4400rpm
$2250+shipping. This is a 4agze front clip.

I guess that this is a good deal for those of you who have an ST. I have 3 of these. Post what state you live in with your zip code so I can tell what shipping is.

www.jarcoinc.com would be the best bet for this clip if you are in the east. the low milage clips are about 2k bucks i believe. you can also get a higher milage clip, i think a guy on celica.net got a 4agze clip shipped to him for 2k dollars from JARCO.

an intercooler can cost anywhere from just gettin piping, and making the top mount a front mount (budget) up to thousands for a nice one. the thing is, you won't need a huge one for the 4agze, a friend gave me a nice idea today, of getting the twin intercoolers from a jetta 1.8t and putting them on the 2 sides of the mouth. anywho, you just gotta look, and intercoolers vary so much on cost..

I wonder how hard it would be to get a 4age boost-ready? Most of them are high compression, so I wonder if anybody sells low compression pistons?

if ure talking aobut the 20v 4age's and yeah they have pretty high compression so i wouldn't even messing with that
but the old 4age's have really low C R tho

Rather than making a 4A-GE turbo-ready, I think it'd be much easier to buy a 4A-GZE and replace the supercharger with a turbo. I've heard that those engines are good for turbos.

Good point. The supercharged engine would have a propper compression for a turbo. But if you could replace the pistons on a 20v, I bet you would make much more power. This will require some thought.

i would say upgrading ure head gasket and rod wouldn't be bad idea either
well from what I heard you can turbo a car on that C.R as long as you have enough fuel

I know that Toysport makes (or has) loads of parts for the 4age. I wonder where I would get parts for a 4agze?

only a 4agze has the option of upgrading the supercharger pulley which increases the PSI and gives you a dramatic power gain.

other underdrive pulleys exist for virtually every engine, but they only provide a very slight power increase.

www.jarcoinc.com can get you a 165 HP 4agze clip for 1800, and a 170HP 4agze for about 2K. to anyone buying an engine, i would strongly recommend this company.

if you want street power, i'd go with the 4agze. the 20V is really only going to shine as a track engine, all of it's power is high in the engines powerband, and the lowend torque of the 20V just isn't all that great.

Ok, this is very helpful. Is the 4agze intercooled? I wonder how much of a power increase a big front mount would give?
