Does any one know if the VVT-li will fit in to my 94 celica st? Im looking to swap the eninge, but i really dont favor turbo engines.... So if any one has any idea's or opinions, let me know, tanks.....

yes, you have one of 4 choices (ranging from most expensive to least)

1) Blacktop BEAMS 3SGE (99-03 Altezza)
2) Redtop BEAMS 3SGE (98-99 SSIII)
3) Blacktop 4AGE 20v (97-99 Levin)
4) Silvertop 4AGE 20v (92-96 Sprinter)

the later 2 would be the easiest to swap in. however they don't have lift, but are vvt enabled.

None of those engines have VVTL-i however. The 3S-GE engines have VVT-i, and the 4A-GE engines have VVT as Pete said, but none have VVTL-i. If you're thinking about swapping in a 2ZZ-GE with VVTL-i, you don't want to do this. If you read the sticky thread at the top of this forum about feasible engine swaps, you'll find details about why you don't want to swap this engine into your car.

Thanks for the info, I didnt see the engine swap thing, im just looking to get some more power, an I dont know anything about toyotas. What would be the best way to get the most power With not blowing away to much money??

No one has done it but I think the 2AZ-FE will fit in (would be expensive though). You get a 2.4 litre with VVTi and great torque. You could gut the dual cats in the exhast manifold and get more power out of it. Wiring would be a nightmare though.

btw - the 2004 RAV4 now comes with this engine and it has 161 HP with 165 ft-lbs of torque.

Further correction... It didn't have cam lift... but it had dual VVT-i... variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust lobes...

Is there any info compairing the VVT in a silvertop 4age to DOHC VTEC in the hondas? Will it have the same effect that at a certain RPM the power curve will change drasticly?

the vvt is better in the toyota than in honda.

VVTL-i is different. Do not know how that operates in a driving environment.

The VVT-i have a calm flow compare to the early vtec.

You can barely notice VVT-i.

Sorry that I cannot offer more details on VVTL-i since we hardly have them here in Barbados. Test drive the new celica (GT, GTS) and compare.

Actually, Honda's DOHC VTEC is more advanced than Toyota's VVT, and for power output, it's far better than VVT. Not only does it alter cam timing, but it also alters valve duration and lift. wink.gif

I just do not understand why toyota is not including VVTL-i in all of its models, especially in the performance range.

Hehehe... I just find it funny that many toyota lovers are very biased about this argument. Vtec or VVT...

For one, vtec is far superior to vvt, and vvt-i. Simply because of its electronic lift control. VVTL-i is the cloest thing toyota has come to matching vtec. You know, if it wasn't a good thing, why are all of the auto makers implementing it in their engines?

Anyways, as for why VVTL-i isn't widely used in all of toyota's motors... because of the head design. The 2zz is the only "GE" performance head that has been designed for VVTL-i. If toyota were to decide to implement it into all of its engines, mostly "FE" head motors, they're gonna have to redesign the heads wider for the added lifters, sprockets, and other mechanisms involved. It would be nice, but impractical. The FE head, as I'm sure you all know, is a sort of cheater head, sporting DOHC running off of a single sprocket. This design is how toyota maintains the reliable fuel economy of a SOHC type narrow head design and maintain decent performance from DOHC. At least in the US, the 2ZZ and the 2JZ are the only GE motors still produced by toyota...

Perhaps if come 2005 when the Celicas are scheduled for a facelift and a mechanical upgrade, Toyota decides to bring maybe a 3ZZGE (perhaps overbored to 2.0 pushing 200+HP to compete against the RSX) or even revive the 3sge...with VVTL-i (220+HP?)... who knows... but yeah...

Well, it must be said that I have not seen any potential small eco high perf. cars from 2000-2004 beside the celica engine.

Well, we will have to see whats happens.

Have any seen the new Subaru engines that came out for 2004? Sweet.
