So i have been looking to buy a another celi to do a 3s swap in and then ONE day do an AWD swap in it, i was really looking forward to this being my money pit, my project car... But... it is looking like it will be alot of money for me to get my AWD celi...
Randomly in my craigslist search for celi's a gsx eclipse came up. Now i had totally forgotten about those cars after i bought my celi, i decided against them because EVERYONE has an eclipse up here, and hardly anyone has a 6th gen. But now that i am looking into buying another car to turn into my toy they keep coming back and plauging my mind, it would be so easy to go drop money and go buy and AWD turbo'd eclipse and be done with it, doing upgrades later and such... I am so lost Do i buy another celi, do the swap, then do the AWD and end up dropping around 18k in it just to get the stock 3sgte in with awd... or do i buy a gsx for 4k-9k and then spend an extra 2-4 grand on goodies? Opinions? This post has been edited by Legit94GT: Aug 2, 2008 - 3:23 PM -------------------- 1 JL 1,000/1v2

DSM's are cool if you find them with low mileage, but if you buy one with 80k or more, you're really asking for trouble. As 97 said, they have issues with crank walk, and their transmissions aren't very forgiving. I'd rather build the Celica up, in my opinion.

Take a walk through a u-pull it around here and see how many celicas you find. Then walk over to the Mitsubishis and see how many Eclipses you find. You will find TONS of Eclipses. Unless you can get one that's very late 90s or better yet, 2000+, stay away from them. Total crap cars.

If its a 98-99 2g, in great shape, then I'd say go for it.
If its a 1g, or a 95-97 2g, then stay away because they are money pits. Or buy a 240 with an sr20 swap. Its a great car and can be made very fast for very cheap. You could also go with a 4-5th gen alltrac, giving you an awd celica to start from. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Legit, I'm going to take the path less traveled here... I like eclipses.
Atleast, i like how they look. I've never owned one, but the mid-late 90's model is the reason i bought this Celica. Now i know this is going to get me flamed into the dirt... It was a good mistake though. -------------------- QUOTE (presure2 @ Nov 6, 2010 - 6:16 AM) Via FB: fcuking awsome!!! D-man FTW! Damn D-Man - most impressive. A while back a friend of mine who use to own a 6gc who was a member of this forum got a super clean 99 Eclipse GSX Convertible (yes, very rare). After the day we bought it, it started to leak oil. After it started, it leaked MAJOR oil. After we fixed that problem, one of the cylinders died and it only ran on 3 cylinders. After that, the head gasket blew while we fixed it. And then we had to bring it to Mitsubishi to rebuild the whole engine block because it was too much of a hassle. After the engine block was rebuilt and two days after we got it back, the tranny went out. Tranny would be in reverse when we would have it in first gear. And we figured the synchronizers we messed up so we had to rebuild the whole tranny. And guess what... ALL OF THIS HAPPENED WITHIN A MONTH'S TIME!!! It was problem after problem after problem. AND WE BABIED THE THING so it wouldn't break anymore but it still did. If you are willing to invest $6000 within the first year JUST TO FIX IT, then go for it. Besides that, stick with what you got or get a better selection than an Eclipse or Talon.

i had a 97 gsx for awhile, it had 97k on it and the ****ing tranny took a **** on me and in my opinion their nice looking cars but i think their over-rated. DSM can be real quick but the seem to have the most problems compared to most other imports. but thats just my opinion. test drive it and look though the cars specs and condition carefully before you jump into it.
P.S. 6TH gen Celicas are soooooooooooooooo much better looking though -------------------- |

If your trying to buy a second car to make fast the celica isn't your best choice. Don't get me wrong, I love my celica because its a great looking daily driver but compared to other platforms its really expensive to make fast. If you like mitsubishi's and awd check out the 3000gt vr-4 with a 5spd tranny. My friend had one and it had a few minor issues but it was a nice looking weekend warrior. If you would like to stay with toyota (a good decison), you could find a decent mr2 in your price range. Or if you really want to be unique and you can justify the spending of A LOT of money you could buy a second celica (~$2000), do a 3sgte swap (~$4000), and plan on doing an AWD conversion in the future. Even with the AWD and some go fast goodies your celica will probably be in the low 12's in the quarter mile and you will spend $12000+ on the car. I can think of a lot of cars that you can much faster for the same money.

The 4g63 is a kick ass engine. Crank walk is actually only an issue with the second gen motors. I say keep the celica for reliability, pick up a first gen in good condition, deal with any problems it may have and you still will save money over a proper swap.
......... Or keep looking for a celica all trac like every one else -------------------- ![]() |

I have been looking at getting a second car, probably for some of the same reasons as you. I know I want RWD or AWD so that knocks out the h22 and b18 swapped hatchbacks and other hondas that I always see on craigslist (also don't want to be another civic kid lol). 240's are nice tuner cars escpecially with an sr20 under the hood. 300zx's are pretty unique and have lots of potential. An MR2 would make a great performer (my favorite choice because you have a 3sgte in a small rwd car). Or you could by a 3sgte celica have a decently fast car. But be careful about buying any swapped car because although you usually save lot of money on the initial purchase the guy before you could have half @ssed it and you'll end up with a money pit. |

Well i think i finally made some choices...
I am going to spend more money on my current celi, custom wall for my subs, more subes, 4in door speakers another amp, newer speakers in the rears, and maybe even 2 more 8's in the trunk, window tint, exhaust, lower it and throw some rims on it... the paint it... Ihave some other stuff i should really be buying, like my ar-15 before they get banned I'm going to keep my eye out for a broke down supra or gsx that i can buy for fairly cheap and then pimp it out for horsepower:) I was talking to my friend about supra's and was like "ya they are awesome and they are even harder to find than celica's, like seriously i havent seen one in more than a month" i say this as i pull into a parking lot with one in it! i parked next to it, it was beatuiful:) thanks for everyones opinions and stories:) -------------------- 1 JL 1,000/1v2

ECLISPES have no head room, at all i sat in one and it felt like i was in a miata good thing it was a convert so i could look over the windsheild just like in the miata, if you want a diff car go 240 lots of parts and goodies easy to find as well but id say get the celi This man speaks a lot of win. The market for 240s is pretty good right now for someone to just pick one up, convert it to a silvia and then sell it back to some n00bs in the LA area so you can afford a ST185. Or just keep it. There's too many things you can do to a 240 especially since it shares its platform with the Nissan Silvia. The best part about them is, its almost too easy to find one and its super cheap to swap anything into. SR20DET, CA18DET, VQ35DE, VG30DETT, RB20DET, RB26DETT, 4AGE, 3SGE, F20C, LS1, older 350s, 13B and 20B, its got more swap options than any car I've EVER heard of AND they're all routine and documented because nobody wants the stock underpowered engine in the car. Before I got my celi I seriously considered the 240SX. That and the Integra (I almost became a honda kid... ewww :'( ) This post has been edited by Taskbot: Jul 29, 2008 - 8:39 PM -------------------- ![]() (\__/) (='.'=) This is bunny. One thing I hate about Eclipses is the orientation of things and common issue of the computer box problem. << so common. Everything is just placed in the engine bay inconveniently. For example to replace a fuel filter which is part of regular maintenance which means it should be easy to access, isn't. You have to remove your air filter, battery, windshield resevoir, and I think brake resevoir - loosen and the fuel filter is located at the very bottom of the firewall which makes it easy to crossthread especially when it hasnt been changed in a while. The oil filter is also located vertically which makes all the oil spill everywhere. Just a pain for everything on these cars. Besides that, if it is working good, it really is a nice car.
