man o man did i have a good day!!!!

i got the turbo in and solved the oil pressure problem.

all i can say is WOW. at 50% throttle it is faster than the car was when NA at 100% throttle

i had a ton of problems today. the piping kept blowing off at different places and then the gasket i made blew apart(used the wrong gasket material)

but its all working now and im boosting at 6psi with no hesitation and a whole lot of noise. im running only a down pipe that i made myself until i can get one made on tuesday.

so, yeah, after a year of parts gathering, hours of thought, and days and days of work, ITS DONE(well, the parts i can do that is)

BTW, the best part was hearing the BOV, which is really really really loud. i could clearly hear it despite running open exhaust.

at 50% throttle i get a swift kick in the ass 1/2 way through 1st gear.

btw i have an auto tranny.

on one drive, i made a left turn and the tranny shifted while at 6psi and right as second gear hit i ran over a part of the street with a small amount of dirt and lost all traction. the speedo went up and the car slowed down.

btw 6psi is the air pressure created by the turbo. all non turbo engines technically run at around 14.7 psi which is the standard atmospheric pressure. increasing the pressure in the engine drastically increases the power the engine makes.

At what RPM is ur turbo kicking in? The 3s kicks in real close to 3K but i prefer that cuz i dont want to be boosting when im driving slowly ya kno?
Also, PSI is pounds per square inch. PSI reading tells you how much air pressure the turbo is forcing into the throttle body. The more & the denser the air, the more/better burn you get. Lamens: The more PSI the more boost, the faster you go. 6PSI is pretty impressive for the 7afe, Congrats.

With the BOV...did you put it towards the throttle body end, or the turbo?
What kind of BOV? and do you have any backfiring issues with it?

turbo kicks in at about 3000 as well, but only if i give it more that 25-30% throttle, otherwise i can hit redline with no boost.

as for the BOV, i have it on the hot pipe after the intercooler. it is about 1 foot away from from the throttle body

and i dont have and never will have backfiring problems(caused by open atmosphere BOV's) because i have a MAP sensor where you have a MAF sensor.

i got some generic, cheap aluminum BOV off of ebay. it was $50 and it looks good and sounds great.

So you have an auto? I was interested if putting such things (Turbo, 3SGTE) in an auto tranny (like mine) would be worthwhile. Opinions?

it would take custom work and a fully programable ECU to make an auto tranny(such as the 5sfe auto tranny or the 3sge auto tranny)

in a straight line, technically an auto tranny equiped car will be faster than a 5spd car with the same setup, just because the guy with the auto tranny never lets off the gas and never has the turbo slow down on him. doesnt mis shift either.

but in the end, its personal preference.

Yeah i was going to put it between the throttle body and intercooler too, but its real tough on the 3s cuz of the TMIC.

Did you weld the BOV or get a kit?

i made a kit. wink.gif

a lot of this setup was custom fab.

as for ecu work. i have an SAFC2 that i will use to control the fuel along with the 12:1 vortech fmu.

the first time it hits you your only reaction is OHHHHHHHHHH ****!!!! hehe yea, nothing like boosting. my mom has a supercharged 04 grand prix GTP, but that just doesnt compare to a lightweight turbo car. mad props on the turbo setup... you need to get some video, and definatly get a dyno on it.

Can't mis-shift...oops I can lol. If you shift with you automatic, unless you go from 1st to 2nd at 4000 revs, in which case it will shift at redline, it may go to fuel cutoff. Sometimes, if I shift too late with mine and have it at WOT just pedal to the metal all the way....it will not shift and I lose. lol.

Now, boost is awesome, but you guys are running like what...160hp to the wheels? Have you guys ever driven a car running like 300 with boost? It's crazy fast...especially when the engine is rotary...mmmmmmm.

that's exactly what i said. "OHHHH ****"

and let off the gas. it seriously scared the crap outta me. i have driven several turbo cars, but never one that wasnt a factory turbo car. the power just hits so much harder in my car.

i will get some vids right after i pick up the car from the shop, hopefully right after school tomorrow.

as of now i still have the stock exhaust from the cat back to the stock muffler, so it should be quite until i install the DR catback exhaust except for the BOV, it echos off of houses and walls every time it blows off.

i'm working on finding places that will dyno the car for a good price.

Jon

it is a garret airsearch t3

got it off of a volvo at a pick your part junkyard for $95 including a $15 core charge.

it had remanufactured plates on it and hardly any shaft play. it also came with an adjustable wastegate actuator

to tell you the truth, it had no lag, but that was when running an open down pipe(and i never really got on it with that setup). now the car hits boost 1/2 way through 1st gear. if i time it right, i can make it hit boost in the 1-2 shift and lose traction.

kinda fun

the car is silent now except for the BOV and the sound of the turbo. i need to put my catback exhaust on, it should help the turbo spool a little quicker and make some sort of exhaust note.

Wow, that's really great. And everything else as far as your engine itself, (head and pistons, etc) is stock right?

How's your gas mileage? Are you planning to do anything else to the motor?

Jon

not sure about my mpg, but from about the 50-60 miles i have driven with the turbo on, im pretty sure i can still get good mpg when i want to.

everything is stock instide the engine.

i plan on finishing the setup with a fmic and good IC piping and a new fuel pump.

other than that i will leave the car as it is and save up for better things

i might, but my car, as it is, is running really really rich, running only a down pipe, black smoke/soot(like with older diesel big rigs) would come out the exhaust during shifts

i have to actually drive the car around for a while before i decide on what i need/want next

i understand that, but thats not what i meant.

i have to actually do more that drive to and from the shop/school

i figure that by time a need to fill up the tank, i will know exactly what needs to be done.

btw, nothing is broken(knock on wood) i have ordered a turbo rebuild kit and im gonna get heat wrap for the down pipe and exhaust housing.

i know some people wanted to know my MPG, today i filled up the tank and got 22mpg

that is while running extremely rich and constantly hitting boost and letting off to test things out.

im sure that once i work all the quirks out i will get a couple mpg better milage.
