hey all, as most of ya know, i have been working at the local maaco, and have been painting there for the past year or so, well, that has come to an end, but that dont mean i've stopped painting!

it was fun while it lasted, and i got what i wanted out of the job:
i LEARNED. biggrin.gif
last night, i preped up and painted jims gt-4 hood and parts for his car, and painted them in my garage.
here are a couple pics i snapped this morning after they were dry.

these last 2 are reflection shots. this is before wetsanding and buffing, since the parts were just painted last night. ill post more when they are done and on the car.

later today i will paint the gt-4 bumper and the forgmann lip.

more pics to come!

Wow Manny..looks real good I cant wait to see it all complete!

Yea I love that blue Def was the first thing that stood out wen I originally bought the car..Its Electron Blue Pearl... Its one of my fav colors on the celica. I think Jim and his brother at one time were talking about changing it and making it darker..I was hoping it was just talk bc I would have been a lil sad to see this car lose this color.

bit off topic, but those of you with GT-Four bonnets that are in their factory paint, whats your plastics like, as per pressures second pic.

I think the paint reacted with the plastic a bit cause its gone a bit odd. kinda looks like its got real shallow scratches (can only see from real close).

anyone else had this?

Can you post the specs of your sprayer, gun, compressor? Nice work.

sure,
my gun is a devilbiss GTI HVLP gun, with a 1.3mm fluid tip.
the compressor is not really up to the job, its a 26 gallon craftsman, its big enough, but the motor just dont have the ummph to keep up, so with it i spray right at the edge of not enough air pressure, and stick to doing smaller parts (the hood is the largest part i've sprayed in the garage.)
i need a few more upgrades that will come over time, but for where im at right now, im pretty happy with how it looks, the dupont chromabase i used matches very well with the paint that is on the car, which is a beautiful thing, and the 2 little kerosene heaters i use get the garage just barely warm enough (~55-60*F)so that the clear flows out and dries well.
i will post a few pics of that later, im going out to the garage in a few to finish prep and paint the bumper and lip, ill post some pics of that as well when im done with those.

thanks for the compliments all, ill be sure to post some finished up pics once its all back together and wetsanded and buffed! smile.gif

the parts were white, jims car is electron blue pearl ,(honda B95P)so, i sanded them and preped them, then went to work, sealed the parts black, then hit them with some dupont chromabase basecoat, and the trusty old sherwin clear:

later today i will paint the gt-4 bumper and the forgmann lip.

Yes he did the same process.

yes. well, technicly no, its black "sealer".
i perfer to use dark sealer under colors like this, you get better coverage, and it dont lighten the color like a white or light grey would. wink.gif
more pics in a few of the bumper and lip, theyre painted.

so the bonnet wing and the rear facing vent bits you were painting in the second pic on the first page are metal on yours? obviously mine is a Group A Rallye, which is the aus version with all of the go fast best goodies they made for 205's, would be interesting how yours are metal and mine arnt.

like i said mine is still under the same paint it left toyota with all those years ago. But yeah it does sound like prep or a reaction thing.

well, not mine, jims, but yes, they are metal, which i too found odd, ive never seen metal ones before, dustin jeff and i all have composite ones IIRC.

can you snap a couple pics of the vents and capture the defects?
a couple pics after a couple hrs of drying yesterday:

Mine also are metal [The back two vents and of course the big middle vent] The little scoop oddly is not - it's a plastic of some type but with some metal mounting hardware like the hood spoiler.

I was just telling Shannon how you didnt need to do that Manny, that was really nice. Thanks for going to the extra mile, you seem to do so in everything you do. I cant believe how well they cleaned up, they look like new in the pictures. I cant wait for this weekend, I never got a tracking number from EMS, so I hope the pump is on its way there and you get it soon! You will have all the other misc. crap on Wednesday. THANKS MANNY! This thing is coming out better than ever expected!

a few more pics to illustrate the diffrence between fresh paint, untouched, and wetsanded and buffed.

here is one before wetsanding and buffing, ignore the spark plug, look at the reflection of the lights, and notice how the reflected image is blurry, and out of foucus looking. this is called DOI, or Depth Of Image, and can be mesured with a set of cards made to mesure the sharpness of the reflected image.

most OEM paint jobs normally come in between a 5 and 7 on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being perfectly flat, and a 1 being like the peel of an orange.
just for refrence, most toyotas ive seen come in between a 5.5 and a 7, most chevys and fords are a 5 or 6, higher end mercedes come in normally a 7-8.5

this first pic is prolly ~ a 7.5, its actually quite flat and shiny, but its definetly not FLAT.
(be sure to open the pics up to full size!!!)

now in these next 2, this has been wetsanded, and buffed, but not polished. (i need to pick some up!!)
notice the huge diffrence in sharpness, and clarity, or DOI.
this is ~ a 9 on the DOI scale, once i get some polish and hand glaze across it, it will REALLY bring out the shine, and depth in the clear.

thats what it SHOULD look like after its cut and buffed!

Just buff the rest of the car up to bring up the shine with some good compound. It will bring up the shine a lot.
A rotary buffer in the right hands can make a huge difference.

Hey Manny awesome job! Did you use a solvent-base or a water-base paint? If you have the used the water-based paint how was the quality of the finish compared to solvent-based paint. I know water-based paints have been around for a long time and some OEMs use them but I am not sure if the ability to match colors is better with than with solvents. Thanks.

Damn - speechless.
With all of your skills if you were more centralized you could make a living just swapping, turbo-ing and doing bodywork/paint.
Killer job as usual.

I wish I could just ship my car to you. Your work is just amazing. If I ever win the lottery, I'm gonna send you my car and a pre-paid VISA with a list of what I want done to it, and whatever is left on the card (on top of whatever you charge, of course) is yours to keep.

Ah, in a perfect world. Nice work.
