So I was planning on doing another 5sfte set-up, but thought why not just go about doing a 5sgte set-up.
I don't plan on running an EMS anytime soon. Although down the road its obvious that I will have to. The plan is to buy a complete 3rd gen 3sge motor. Thats right a 3sge motor. The plan is to just take the head and all the electronics and TRY to sell the block. I already have turbo parts, minus the turbo. I will run with the 3sge ecu, but with the emanage ultimate. Injectors since the 3sge is side feed, I will probably go with 540s. Not sure what injectors the 3rd gen 3sge uses. I have been in contact with MCS and I will be probably be getting a crank that has already been turned down to accept the stock 3sgte rods I am using. The cost of their crank is 300, but I am in the process of shopping around to see if its cheaper to machine down the crank I have out of the 94 block. The plus side to MCS is the fact that they use 98+ cranks only. I will have the wiring harness converted for me by Doc. I did originally plan to build the bottom end with the following parts and get the 5sfe cams regrind from Geoff at Colt Cams for $400, oversized valves from a 2jz and do the head up. To be honest the machining is the thing that makes both plans pricey. I DO want to build a 5sfTe beast, but at the same time Just think of having a 5sgte. What do you guys think I should do. I'm going to be honest, I have been researching day and night for the past week. Not going to bed until 4AM and the first thing I do when I wake up is log onto the internet. Lets make this final and end my dilemma. -Will This post has been edited by bccentaur3: Feb 19, 2009 - 11:14 PM -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Have been talking to Eazy lately on mr2oc. On Garretts website when they say 2.2 stroker is that the 3sgte block with the 5sfe crank? If so thats not what I'm doing. I'm using the 5sfe block and crank with cp 8.5:1 pistons and stock 3sgte rods. The head I made it finally today I will be using a 3rd gen 3sge head. So the block will be for sale this summer when I get the motor. Now in the mean time I am going to be building the block. Hopefully matching up the coolant passages properly.
My plan is to buy a cheapo 3sgte head gasket, match it up to the 5sfe block and drill the coolant passages if needed. I hope this goes well, because I want to have the block built by the time I get the head. SO fingers crossed on the way I am doing it. Because I've read that you are supposed to use the head gasket from the head you are using on the block. But I really don't want to order the 3sge motor yet, just want the block built so I can pass up some time over spring break. ANyone with insight let me know if its a good idea to just go ahead and buy a cheap 3sgte head gasket put it up against the 5s block and drill the coolant passages on the block to match the gasket. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

from what i understand the bore and deck height on the blocks are the same, the real difference-displacement and compression wise- are the cranks....
also heard that the 5s blocks are stronger then the 3s blocks... do a little more research on the 2.2 strokers and you will find that people are taking the 5s blocks and cranks and machining the cranks to fit the 3s rods or aftermarket 3s rods and getting the same pistons you are getting to answer the question: 2.2 stroker = 3s or 5s block with 5s crank machined to fit 3s rods, with a 3sge or 3sgte head on it so you WILL have a 2.2 stroker if you continue what you are doing -also i am not understanding all of your talk about the blocks in the last post about getting anohter one and building one and selling the other and all this business...please clarify. -------------------- Coming in 2010 full paintjob - new wheels - modified body - new interior - engine build- marriage |

I understand the difference between the 5sgte, 5sge, and 3sgte stroker set-up, no need to explain to me. I've done countless hours of research and I think I'm going to pick up a gen 3 head gasket from kbox to make sure everything is good for coolant passages.
Now some may give me crap about using the stock 3rd gen 3sge and a piggyback for fmu, but thats what I want to run in the mean time just to see how things go. SO to clarify for you. I am going to pick up a COMPLETE 3rd gen 3sge motor. I will be stripping the entire head assembly from the motor. Now the block that is left I will be selling. The head will go onto the built 5s block. Unless I can't cant a machine shop locally to machine down the rod journals for a good price, I will be picking up a crank from MCS. I will be using stock rods and bearings. CP Pistons will be bought before the end of this week. Someone said that wiseco pistons are better quality but I can't seem to find ones for a 5sfe block. The head will be left stock and maybe, just maybe upgraded cams. As for the injectors, I don't know what would best suit the turbo I decide to go with, but I will need to find a 3rd gen turbo manifold for a good price. Don't really want to fork over 400 for a manifold. But this WILL happen this summer. Like my coaches always told me, where theres a Will theres a way. And correction. The bore is not the same. Stock bore on a 3sgte is 86mm where as the stock bore on a 5s is 87. CP pistons will increase the stock bore. 5s has a longer stroke to, which is good for boost. Plus I opt to go with a 3rd gen so I don't have to deal with an afm. YES YES if I went standalone I won't need to worry, but I'm not going standealone yet. Its not a stroker if I use the 5s block with the 3s head. Its a hybrid. The stroker is the 3s motor with the 5s crank.

So I went ahead and ordered a 3rd gen 3sgte head gasket to match up the coolant passages on the 5sfe. I also put my order in for a machined down 98+ 5sfe crank from Shaun at MCS.
Do I need to have the pistons in hand to have my block bored? My rods should be here by the end of the week. People are haters man. lol.... -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Should get the machined down crank in a couple of weeks.
Rods end of this week. Got the emanage ultimate today. Going to the machine shop tomorrow to see how much they charge for boring, honing, and decking the block. I also made a mistake by ordering the 2nd turbo manifold, because I WAS going with the gen 1 3sgte head, but decided I didn't want AFM so I am going with a 3rd gen 3sge. So Tonight I bought a 3rd gen turbo manifold for $70 shipped. WOOOT!!!! Oh I also picked up an engine stand today for my build. Oh and I gotta get a 3rd gen head gasket that fits up to an 88mm bore. I canceled my order for the stock 3rd gen HG last night. Sucks I gotta fork over 300 for a damn HG. But you gotta do what you gotta do. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

FYI - you can use Mitsubishi / DSM top feed injectors with the 3SGE rail. I'm using RC 550cc injectors with the stock 3rd 3SGTE ECU and injector resistor pack with no issues. You'll also need the injector pigtails if you go this route.
The side feed intake manifold is quite good for handling boost, but you'll want to disable the ACIS butterflies to keep them in the closed condition. Otherwise the turbulence they create when opening will kill your power. For this setup, which timing belt will you use? -------------------- Scott

Ahh... I spent lots of time researching that. Since I plan on using a Gen 2 water pump 98 Solara oil pump I intend on using a 2nd Gen timing belt.
Still trying to look for the 3rd gen head gasket for a decent price. I couldn't find an hks hg, but I did happen to find an Apexi HG on rhdjapan.com. Still its almost $300 bucks. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

I recall having problems with the 2nd gen timing belt on my hybrid motor ( 2nd gen 3SGTE block / 3rd gen head). Be sure to keep the 3rd gen belt around just in case.
....It may have been the tensioner though, I had two 3rd gen 3SGE's and 1 of the timing belt tensioners' was shorter than the other. -------------------- Scott

IIRC the tensioner pulley on the 3rd gen is the same, but the mounting is different.

Well sounds like some have already corrected you on some of the errors. Some advice - since you are shopping around for machine shops - make sure they know how to properly do it for forged pistons. There is a difference in how the stock cast pistons behave and how the forged behave. Just something to keep in mind. What about oil squirters ?
Good luck on selling the 3rd gen block - unfortunately it offers no advantages to most. -Terracar -------------------- '92 ST185, '88 ST165, '05 Galant LS, '08 Legacy

Terracar makes a good point, I think I mentioned this the other day. Before you bring it to the machine shop, make sure you have the piston manufacturer's specs for piston-to-wall clearance. You might have to slightly alter the factory specs. For example, 4032 aluminum will expand 15% more than 2618 aluminum. If the shop tells you it doesn't matter, run away.

Well, Terracar theres many people out there that run the 5sgte with big horsepower with no issues. Yes the 5s block doesn't come with oil squirters, but those guys seem to manage. From reading the 3rd gen 3sge block actually does come with oil squirters. Someone can actually use the block lets say someone got a 1st gen 3sge and blows their motor.

$270 for hot tank, boring, honing and decking the block. Just waiting to get a used 3rd gen hg from Scott. Once I get that I'll line up the passages. Once that is done the block will be off to the machine shop. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

You may want to wait for the HKS gasket. I remember seeing differences in the coolant ports between the TRD, TTE, and Stock 2nd gen gaskets. There may be differences with the HKS gasket as well?

You can have the compression lowered by having the pistons skimmed or by fitting a thicker headgasket.

I really don't know much about the beams. I've read that the beams head actually has a different exhaust and intake manifold flange compared to the 3rd gen 3sge. I am using a 3rd gen 3sgte turbo manifold and it should bolt right up to the 3rd gen 3sge head.
If I were to turbo a 3sge, I would do the 3rd gen 3sge. Why? Because the 3rd gen 3sge came with oil squirters. Something the previous gen 3sge motors lacked. It has the same rods and pistons as the 3sgte I would assume. All you have to do is disable the acis system so the turbo won't cause much turbulence. The beams motor is a great all motor set-up. I would assume the compression ratio in that bad boy is super high. If you want all motor go beams. I'm sure people have turbocharged the beams motor with success, but if you want big power go a different route. The stock motor plus turbo won't do much. Plus you run into EMS. This is what I will be running into as well. Some may disagree with my choice to go with the stock 3sge ecu plus piggy back of choice emanage ultimate for a build like this, but I am doing it to learn. Besides I'm not gunning for 500 whp YET.. I chose the emu because I am going to run just the upgrade ct-26 or maybe a ct27, not sure yet, but its not going to make a lot of power. I'm hoping for 300 whp this summer. And because of my 300 whp power goals I am sure I don't need a standealone just yet. Take a look at Mannys set-up. He is using the EMU on his 5sfte set-up and just look at the numbers he is producing. Thats on a stock unopened 5s. Yes yes the ct26 will poop out on me, but this will only be used for one year. By the summer of 2010 I will be ripping off the head to get it redone so I can make more power, and the obvious will come too. A standealone ems and an upgraded turbo set-up. But then again I will also use a lot of my money to redo the whole suspension set-up of the car. Again I am not building to go in a straight line. I'm building for rallycrossing purposes. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

ok well i have a t36 turbo and i suppose its too much for the beams right? so my best bet is to get a 3sgte and rip it apart and go all perforfance or should i just monster up my old 5s

I honestly have never heard of a t36 turbo.
I can not stress enough on how much research you have to do when going into building any motor. I did hours of research before diving into this build and I'm still learning everyday. If you want to build the 5s more power to you, but you will be dumping lots of money into it. The head will stop you from the gains you want. Try this. Whats your budget? How different do you want to be? How much power do you want to put down? Why are you building it? My budget= what ever I decide to spend on this build. The build all depends on how much money I want to spend over a period of time. And the period of time I have to build this is endless. Although I did set a date of when I want this bad boy running. How different do I want to be= some people know what I'm putting the motor into and some don't. Since this is a 6th gen celica forum, I will only show the 6th gen worthy materials. How much power= 300 right off the bat. 400whp in the long run. Purpose to build this= its not my dd track use only. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Thanks to Scott I got his used 3rd gen head gasket in the mail today. I'll have to mail you some money for the service.
![]() Now lets compare this to the 5s block ![]() Looks like a lot of drilling to me. I'll have to take a better look at it this weekend at my buddies house, since thats where my block is. Greg, be ready for another 3 hours of drilling. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

SO me and a few MN 6gc members met up at our buddies house.
I brought my 3rd gen head gasket along with me to see how much drilling I'll actually have to do. This is how much I have to drill. Keep in mind I couldn't drill last night because there were too many drunk people around. Besides I didn't have the carbide burr with me. So I opted to drill out the oil pan bolts I broke into the bottom of the block from before. Used a left hand drill bit and it worked wonders. And we also tore into a built 7mgte motor that seized up. The passages circled are the ones that need to be drilled to match. This is from left to right. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And for sh!ts and giggles 3sgte rods compared to 5s rods. ![]() ![]() I should have the coolant passages done soon. Just running short on money, so I won't have the block sent out to the machine shop till later. Maybe after spring break. I'm still waiting on my crank from MCS, but they emailed me and told me that its being balanced right now. Shot peened rods for 75? 75 a piece right? Not the whole set, because used rods go for that much. Besides I don't plan to make too much power. My goal really is 400 to the wheels. Obviously not with the CT27 upgrade, but maybe next year. Who knows ill have to see what exactly I have to do to the stock head to achieve those goals.

so thanks to 1bwilson, he told me to update this thread. Theres nothing to update, because FRICKIN MCS hasn't sent out my crank yet.
Its been over 2 months and nothing. I've emailed Shaun over and over and no replies. So I decided to email Sang Han back and he told me he spoke to Shaun and they are swamped with their local customers. But last time I spoke with Shaun he told me that the crank just got done being balanced and getting shipped out. STILL NOTHING.. Then again on the bright side, I have decided to go with a 1st gen 3sgte head. Since there is a local guy selling his all-trac for DIRT CHEAP. Because its junk.. But the motor and harness is salvageable. Now because people give me crap, I've done my homework and I WILL make power. This is the plan pick up the 88 alltrac next friday. Take the motor and all of the AWD components for a later project ![]() The block I am just going to keep as a coffee table ha. And found a decent price on a 1st gen 3sge sidefeed intake manifold. I will update with pics when I get the JUNKTRAC next weekend. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Hey guys, update on the project.
A couple of weeks ago I found a local selling a junk st165. My initial plan was to buy the car and tow it back home. Because my only access to a truck to tow a car was my uncle and he bailed out on me that morning I had to opt for plan B. So get this.. After looking at everything closely you CAN use a 5s headgasket on with the 1st gen 3sgte head, BUT you will have to modify the HG and drill one coolant hole. BUT I do not intend on doing this, because I'd rather do it the hard way and drill my block for the coolant passages. I will update with more pics of the differences on the blocks. So the plan for now is this 1st gen 3sgte head ATS 264 camshafts made for the 1st gen head 1st gen 3sge side feed intake manifold delete tvis I am in the process of making a jumper harness to run the 2nd gen 3sgte ECU, hopefully if I can find a 93 ecu, higher fuel cut. I'm still waiting on MCS STILL!!!!!!!!!! They told me that if they don't ship it out by LAST week I should get a full refund. Haven't heard from them yet. I have a spare crank, but it just seemed like a better idea to go with MCS since you'd think they know their stuff right? I'll update with pics of the block differences and the head, since Sammie didn't take any pics of the head when I asked her to. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

![]() ![]() Thanks to the help of fellow MN 6th geners Zgear (Ger) and Muggs (Greg, and the help of my old man, we got the motor out and loaded in the car in about 5 hours. The next day I took the head off. Oh and btw notice the front brakes off the trac? Yep they are fitted on Sammies ST hahaha. I'm still trying to see if I can fab up a bracket to use st185 rotors up front with the twin pot calipers. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

I don't think I can run 2jz valves on the 1st gen 3sgte. The valvetrain is completely different from all the 3sgte motors. I believe you can run them on the 5s head. I'm not sure.

so the 1st gen 3sgte head may be the most easy head upgrade for the 5s?
Can't wait to see how this pans out... makes alot of sense to head this route IMO, more work but it seems like if everything is properly sourced a monster can be built relatively cheaply ![]() |

hahaha you just said CHEAP. Nothing about this build is cheap, unless you're talking about all the labor I'm doing.
About the 1st gen head being easier, I honestly think that all 3s heads have the same degree of difficulty. It all depends on the block, if its got coolant channels that match right up or not. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Update:
picked up a 1st gen 3sge intake manifold at the picknpull for $14. This manifold will work perfect with the fmic set-up. No pipe running over the valve cover woot!!! I was really lucky, I got there with 30 minutes left and found the st162 with 15 minutes left. Took me and my buddy all of 15 minutes to get the manifold off. But I'm going back to get the cam shafts, since it is an upgrade for the 1st gen 3sgte head. Money is pretty slow right now, so I'm waiting until next week to FINALLY bring the block to the machine shop. Once I get the block back I will assemble it and post some more pics. I didn't want to post the pic of the intake manifold because its filled with nastyness. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

FINALLY got my block sent to the machinist, because the arp rod bolts came in.So now they can clean up the block and press in my rod bolts.
So in the mean time this is what I had to do to the 3sge intake manifold to fit the 3sgte throttle body. ![]() What it should look like ![]() What it looks like half way done ![]() BTW this is for the iacv And some injury pics. I low sided my bike the other day going about 20 around a corner with "cold" tires. ![]() upper body was fine, thank god for jackets and gloves. The bike is fine just some scratches. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

![]() got them from raceeng.com. And can I tell you price is good and shipping was very fast. I will be plastigauging everything when I get my block back from the machinist. This post has been edited by bccentaur3: Sep 22, 2009 - 6:10 PM -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Well, it has just been a waiting game. I plastigauged the motor with the new bearings I bought and found that I needed oversized bearings for my main bearings. So after another week I was able to button the motor up.
After putting the motor in the car, I realized I needed an oil filter relocation kit. The oil filter won't clear the 3" dp. So I went out and found someone locally selling a kit for his sons 5sfte setup. Heres a pic of the motor assembled minus the oil filter relocation kit. ![]() Since then I have put the motor in the car and have her running. I am idling a bit high, thinking it maybe the isc resistor in the ecu. It could be a vacuum leak though, since the gasket kit came with 2 throttle body gaskets for some reason. Or it could be the notching I did on my intake manifold to throttle body for the ISC. I didn't make it big enough. If that were the case, I can live with a 1000 rpm idle. I'll take more pics of the motor in the bay. Oh so far I have 2 miles on her. and btw the valve cover is super scuffed up now after having to pull the motor 2 more times after original install due to some issues with the transmission. And cams not lined up properly, stupid 3sge cams. They don't have a notch to line up with the cam cap near the cam gear. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

until i got my rpm down to about 700 i found i didn't have a hell of alot of power. lets see if we cant fix this
BC cams might be something to look into, although they are expensive This post has been edited by Mstoochn: Nov 29, 2009 - 2:59 PM |

I swapped back to the st165 gte cams. I was using the st162 GE cams, but I couldn't get it to align properly to actually have the timing down right. Once I swapped to the GTE cams it idled a lot better.
I'm getting this crazy squeel from the timing belt. I ordered a new tensioner and idler pulley, so hopefully it fixes that, because I inspected the car a bit more today and remembered I had my car idling, and out of no where it shut off. Well checked the mechanical timing and it looks like it jumped a tooth. Funny thing is I was able to start it right up. Plus I was able to slide the belt off the tensioner without force. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

No real update. I have a little over 2500 miles on the build now. found out the turbine seal is leaking and I also have a leaky injector on cylinder 3. Got the 5sgte to run on the honda ecu conversion, but the ignition timing is way too retarded by around 25*. So its currently still running on the 3sgte ecu and ignition components.

yes sir.
List of parts obdI honda ecu preferably p28 d16 honda distributor d16 distributor cap with the capabilities to run external coil (stock toyota coil) Key made to fit onto honda distributor and into the toyota cam jumper harness made for the stock toyota harness to ecu harnesses made for quick connects for the honda distributor to the stock toyota dizzy plug and to the stock toyota ignitor. honda ecu chipped. I think my map sensor that I had made took a crap on me, thats why timing was way off. But will never be able to get the car up and running solid on honda chrome, because she caught on fire and is very totaled. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer
