Im getting a thumping noise on deceleration only. It sounds very similar to the noise you would hear if you had a flat tire. It is mostly noticeable where decelerating in 3rd gear, right around 2,000 rpm. Its hard to pinpoint if its coming from the left or the right side... kind of sounds like the clutch/trans right in the center of the front of the car.
Anyone deal with something similar to this?

My original diagnosis was that my axle that had been leaking grease was the cause of the noise, but I swapped the axle out for a brand new one (needed to be done sooner or later anyway). but the thumping persists.

Any ideas?

this one time i felt that in my old St, and it turned out my wheel was about to come off, so check your lugs to be on the safe side, this also happened on one of the spacers i had on the rear wheels recently, the lugs that bolt the spacer to the hub were stripping from the pressure and only one was holding it on... luckily i noticed and removed the spacers for safety's sake...

also have you checked the rear motor mount?

Motor mounts all have poly inserts in them and look great.
I do have spacers on the car, but I checked all the lugs and they were all torqued down.

i get a thud in my rear left wheel when i get down to 2nd gear while braking, i take my disk of and clean the hand break pads and put wd40 on it, it seems to be ok after that than it starts again after a couple months, i think its dirt or lubrication or both.

Can someone with a manual gt do me a favor?
Can you check if your drivers side axle has and UP/down play in it? You can do this by just poping your hood and pulling up on the axle a few times from the drivers side of the car. Tell me if it has any movement or makes any noises as you move it up/down.

ok just checked, its completely inaccessable from the engine bay though, i have the stock air box/fuel filter/charcoal cansister in the way, so i turned the steering wheel all the way to the left...

1. Has almost unexistent play pushing/pulling the axle into and out of the transmission, i think the LITTLE click noise it makes is the c-clip holding the axle in the differential.....

2. As a substitution to the method you wanted performed i pushed/smacked the axle upwards away from the ground and i noticed there is some small play and a noise that i can only describe it as a loud sqeeek...hurts the teeth lol.

Thanks for checking.
I guess what I really need then is for someone who happens to be under the car to push up on the axle, right where it meets the trans. That would tell me for sure if what im noticing is normal or not.
I might try to make a vid of mine, if I get a chance to get under there again sometime soon.

Acually, when i was removing the old (first) axle, if you remember i made a thread, and when i pulled on it i didn't know about the c-clip so i yanked enough for the boot to pull off and leave just that inner clover hub connected to the tranny...

when it was just that inner axle part there is an amount of play.... if i have a chance i will jack it up today, and take a video as well, i need to put all the plastic liners on anyway, left them off after the swap to check for leaks smile.gif

That would be awesome if you could make a vid.
