hey guys..i just got my st205 hood and bumper painted and installed... it felt so good...it was better than sex..ahhaha j/k... my parents saw the hood and bumper and started scolding me and stuff... and brought something to my attention.. "What do you do when it rains?" "won't the water hit the engine?" "aren't you gonna drive around with steams comin out of your engine?!" anyways... uh...what i'm trying to say is..have any of you guys ever come across this?..i mean the grill is like wide open..and water will go into it... help?

There is a cover that you can get....I dont know where or even how much tho.
When it rains does water not get into the engine bay from under the car? Yes it does, you will be fine as long as you dont go driving in lakes,ponds and most salt water obsticals. -Bryan- -------------------- Member of Team 5sfTe

yea, i thought about that too...im a little more worried about the snow, actually...lol...im thinking of having a buddy of mine fabricate some kind of removable insert for the winter...

it doesnt matter..it goes right down and doesnt affect anything...theres a space atleast in mine where it doesnt hit really anything

ive been wondering about this too, more so if i turbo my car. Since the GT4 hood vent is right over the exhaust manifold, if i install a turbo, wont rain/snow drop directly on top of the turbo?? wont that cause steam?

Water can get ON the engine, its OK people. Its if water gets IN the engine thats the problem. You do have plastic pieces underneath the engine to protect it mainly from debris not water. You can get a "catch" that goes on the intake tube and it'll catch any water that gets INTO the intake, which is not easy to do.
But yeah if ur engines hot enuf u might get some steam if it rains. So? -------------------- |

he makes a great point: the only time water is damaging is if: a) you drive thru huge puddles and stop, go into a lake, try and surf with ur car or b) u drive ur car around get it nice and hot then spray water on it. u will crack ur block. Yea, I would be worried about the crackin the block thing. But I don't see that happening unless you do some crazy stuff. I'd personally just get a sheet of aluminum, paint it flat black, and put it under the hood where the vent is.

thats what im planing for the winter. i dont want to have to dig out snow from my engine bay if my car is sitting parked during a storm. ive had my hood for about 2 months now and never had a problem with rain. i do see a little steam when it rains but its not a major thing because the water evaporates very quickly on the hot maifold. the main thing that i notice all the time is hot air comming out of the vent. this must be a good thing because the hot air can vent out and not heat soak my engine. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Awwww  but that takes all the fun out of driving!
c) Water gets inside the housing of electrical components under your bonnet. Can be nasty, but I don't think it would really be an issue with our cars. |

getting the altenator wet would be a problem kinda... but its not in a place that it will. Havnt any of you ever washed your engine bay? And whats wrong with steam, think it will be so much that there will be this wall of steam in front of you and you wont be able to see? It wont happen...

i take my car thru a car wash that doesnt use the brushes so it just sprays water and i get steam but thats about it..its gone within 3 mins! doesnt do anything!

The reason why it doesn't happen on real GT4's is because they have a W/A intercooler chillin right where that vent is. It would prolly get the IC wet, hence the reason why it has that shiny black plastic covering. 5th gens had the A/A and that wouldn't have been the best idea, hence the hood scoop. The GT4 hood wasn't designed for cars w/o an IC

sorry, but that is incorrect. most people think that the hood vent sits over the intercooler...this is not true. the vent is right over the exhaust manifold. righ where the 3sgte turbo would be. the idea is that since the turbo gets so hot, its best to vent that air out and not heatsoak the whole engine bay. the water to air intercooler dosnt need a vent because it uses water to cool the air (boost) thats being fed into your engine. the 5th gen alltrack hood scoop sits right over the intercooler because that is an air to air intercooler. it uses air to cool air (boost). -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

on my car, underneath the bonnet is covered with insulation, and there is a plastic sheild that is in between the vent and the insulation but set forward slightly, so what happens is, if any water drips on the insulation and doesnt get absorbed or evaporated straight away, it just runs off onto the plastic sheild, which channels all the water to the front of the hood and it runs out down near the radiator.
not to mention, it keeps the engine clean from dust and dirt and anything else that could fall through an open vent. it still vents heat with the insulation in place, but most of it is vented out of the rear vents. |

how do you people keep your engine bays clean if you are scared of getting your engine wet?
i hit mine up with a pressure washer and it doesnt do any harm. water doesnt hurt the outside of and engine |

Why don't you make a "catchcan" sort of thing underneath the scoop with a little hose running downwards to the ground. That way your valvecover won't get corroded.
