I'm hoping for some help from the Hawaii guys or anyone else that has visited the islands.

My wife and I are planning a vacation to Hawaii in the next month or so and we're thinking about Hawaii.

Which Island would be the best to stay at?
What are some things we must do while we're there?
What are some things or places to avoid or watch out for?

I've been looking around at some stuff online and I would like some input from some locals.

Oahu is the main most industrialized island. I do suggest island hopping to the Big Island also. Volcanos National Park
Hike up Diamond head/Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor Site, Pali Battle Lookout, Go to some Luau's, come to the Polynesian Cultural Center (i can get you a good discount), Eat some Kahuku Giovanni Shrimp (10secs away from my house), drive my car biggrin.gif, take pics with my car biggrin.gif, Jump off Waimea rock, eat shave ice, watch the sunset, walk around waikiki.

You can start my side and work your way East and visit some places and eat the food, then go south to more sites, then west until Pearl Harbor then North again, then back to your hotel biggrin.gif

if you need a guide let me know. i'll request a day(s) off.

AVOID WAIANAE WEST SIDE AREA!!!! also avoid starring at the scenery while driving. always carry your valuables, never leave them in your vehicle.
Avoid the shaddy areas in waikiki.

But most definitely YOU HAVE TO HIT UP NORTH SHORE my grounds Hahaha

I'll call around my CCO guys and see if i can pull some strings

Awesome. Thanks for the tips. I'll have to hit up some of that. I think we're looking at 3 or 4 nights but have no clue which island to stay on yet.
It all sounds really cool. maybe we can get all that in and most importantly, some relaxing beach time.

id stay away from Oahu completely, bunch of smelly Hawaiians with cars ridiculously low driving around:P(just kidding)

Oahu is a lot more developed than the big island,i was at both Oahu and the big island in June 08.The big island has literally no white sandy beachs,if u find a beach its either coral, green sand(2 mile hike),or its so crowded its not worth it.Oahu is a lot more crowded than the big island but they have beautiful HUGE white sandy beachs. If u go to oahu make sure you go to pearl harbor, its a long wait but it is WELL worth it.Also,if u see a black celica with a wing on it,please throw something at it(pref a egg).Ive heard that Maui is nothing but a tourist island and is full of tourists.

Cool Let me know what ever you decide.

and yeah that black celica is a ghost. try hit his windshield at the lower driver's corner. there's already a small crack there he needs a new windshield.

Avoid the shaddy areas in waikiki.

Its hard to tell the shady areas from the maps. I know that they're normally somewhere under a tree or umbrella biggrin.gif

I think we might end up somewhere in Waikiki. It seems to be in the middle of all of the neat things.

And thanks a ton on the discounts. That looks pretty cool.

Ooo The Marriott. Kinda too deep in Waikiki for me. Waikiki is what we call 5-0 Haven. Cops on bicycles or cars ticket my car for anything they can.

but yeah let me know when you planning on visiting the Polynesian C. Center. I'll show up with my ID and Discount card.

made the reservations over the weekend. We ended up with late sept. and staying at Outrigger Reef on the Beach. its rated higher at #8 in Honolulu and was cheaper than the Marriott one.

Thanks again for all the advise.

http://s659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/j.../Hawaii%202009/

well, I'm back and I had an awesome time. Unfortunately, we were only there for 3 nights, and never got to meet up with Jon.

Monday: arrived that afternoon, walked around on the beach, ate, signed up for activities, slept. we were wiped from the flight in.

Tuesday: Got breakfast paid for and activity coupons for $100 off from the timeshare guy just because we told him right away that we arent interested in buying a timeshare. pool and beach that morning, and Paradise Cove Luau that afternoon. Lots of fun and lots of mai tai's.

Wednesday: got a late start that morning and got up to Hanuma bay as the parking lot was filling up and went snorkeling. It was like being in Finding Nemo. Afterwards, we drove up 72 and circled back to Waikiki on 61 south. We got cleaned up, and went shopping and ate at Ruth's Chris steakhouse. I now have a new favorite (albeit expensive) place to eat.

Thursday: beach in the morning and hung out for a little while with Cathy (Kristin's mom) from the last Biggest Loser. then went on a drive up to the north shore before we had to leave. Took H1 (H1-N1) to H2, to 99 past the Dole Plantation and into Waialua where we hung out for a while and watched the waves. First we stopped at Haleiwa beach park, then drove back through to Kaiaka State Recreation Area. After that, it was pretty much time to go, so back to the airport we went. The weirdest thing was getting on the plane at 4:30, taking off, watching the sun set, then watching it rise as we landed in Chicago. Ugh... its gonna take me a while to figure out what day it is.

I can't wait to go back.
