5/24/11 this thread was edited, with updated pics and added extra information for those beams swappers!!!!

anything you see in red, its very important to pay notice to, it will save you money in the long run...

Also this is not the bible of the Beams swap, others have attempted this swap and have good experience with it. No this swap is not going to give you 600 hp

GOOD LUCK!!!

Ok, before anyone asks, it wont go in until December, how much i paid, plenty bucks...

I will keep my fingers crossed until then, cuz i wont have warranty, but its supposed to be low mileage engine between 20 - 35 k miles. Seller forgot to ship the ecu, but will ship it on monday..

i have a question for Turnip and 2bcelica batman or rusty. I have a couple of cables that need ID

With any swap make sure you are getting what you are buying, ask for pictures to the seller, you dont understand how important this is because, you will be misled into buying crap!!!!

that little thing you see there is the vvti sensor, this is the most common broken sensor and its expensive, about 300 usd...

See how clean the engine looks from inside, this attests to the low mileage claim, well most of the time

Another big issue, as this is missing the OEM box and the MAF, two items very important to keep the air flow regulated.

This next picture and the previous one, shows something important, the Bpipe, your swap must have one, or make it from scratch, good thing to also get the axles, you see, mine were cut, although you can use the 5sfe axles, the beams axles are beefier.

The OEM fuse box, very important because you want that EA1 plug intact!!!

And please, the most important, GET THE ECU, they forgot to send mine.

the first one, is this cable located at the exit of the TPS sensor i asume, its three cables black red and white.

on the harness this one is located here kind of goes to the back, dunno

the other one, is another cable that goes parallel to the AFM sensor, its cut so dont know what it is, it looks like another set of 3 cables... this one goes to the front...

of course cut under the fuse bay harness, but i assume this are for foglights and headlights.

Unknown sensor, but i have a plug that fits, and is not one of the any ones that have been cut. located on the intake, so must be some sort of vacuum sensor

an extra vvti solenoid, cuz the original is broken.... hope its not a pain to replace this bastard...

I got the B pipe, but the flex section, is very flexy, as i remember my 5sfe one was a little stiffy. so i dunno.

All you beams swappers are welcome to put your input...

that was very kind of you to send me a message. congrates I knew you'd pick this engine. nice to see people going for something different than the typical 3S-GTE swap.
Wheres your AFM did you get one??

I dont know if it'll help or confuse you even more but I have the 3S-GE (3gen) wiring diagram if you want it. (PM me your email) maybe useful for the headlights etc since the gen3 3sge is 4 wires for the TPS.

I know a couple of SS-III BEAMS owners which I can get into contact if you require some help.

so whats the plan??? figure everthing out now wiring etc, then maintance cambelt etc then ready for december swap.

I just spent 20 minutes looking all around mine and the wires that you show cut in the small wire loom I do not believe to be part of the stock harness. Every wire on my harness was in the main bundle and there was no separate wires in loom running parallel to the main harness. Plus I looked around everywhere for that those wire colors together and could not find them going to any plug.

Hope that helps.

thanks guys, unless its some kind of alarm system, have no clue, perhaps looking at the wiring diagram will help. oh well, right now it will collect dust.

Ill take beter pics and ask in the beams forums later on the week

i guess i will be the first vert, since outsider is a hatch, however there are some 5th gen verts running around

Nice Noberto !

that loom with the 3 wires is not stock, just lose it. That vsv should just plug into the harness over there, look for a matching plug.

if you have any questions about wiring, let me know.

Peel back that loom and lets take a look at the wire a little closer. Lets find out that the previous owner had the night pager electronic blow-off valve speaker setup on his ride. LOL

lol, i went back and your guys are right, i lost those two wires, they are nothing. haha, guess i was too exited yesterday

so far all seems complete until i get the ecu.

now the litlle vacuum hose on the intake, i could not find the place to plug it.

and what about the b-pipe, it does not seem as sturdy as my sfe one, seems like it could be broken

I am already looking at getting another car while this is in the works thats why i cant do it until december. I cant be walking...

or at least until i can save some money so i can rent a car for a week....

hmm very nice. i wasnt sure which one you were going to get, im sure there are much more redtops out there than trying to find v6 from a camry.

this one isnt automatic is it? i think i remembering you posting up on the beams-redtop forums saying you were going to get an automatic one. I do see shift cables, but i dont kow the difference between automatic and manual shift cables. eh sucks your warranty will run out, Hope everything runs smoothly with install!!

no, this is a manual with lsd, around february i will buy an automatic, cuz they are cheap, sell off the parts and keep the block as a replacement..

yeah, crazy, but its not easy to get parts for these anyways, i could always swap the engine while i fix....

just FYI, there is no such thing as an "auto engine"
its the tranny that is auto or manual.
the only thing that changes on the engine between auto or manual is that a manual tranny uses a flywheel bolted to the motor, an auto uses a flex plate and torque converter.

yeah what i meant by auto engine is "it comes with all the auto accessories", but the engine block pretty much standard.

I should have said an auto swap. But that will be when i have this engine bolted down.

I was gonna say, I'd have to kill if this was bolted to an automatic.

However, that raises a question for me...were any JDM Celicas ever automatic? I would think there would be a lot less demand for automatics in the rest of the world compared to America.

my ecu finally came, finally. Is there a way to test ECU, i hate to not know if it works.

however, one big problem

The vvti sensor they sent me is not the right one, it came from a blacktop altezza engine, and have no use for it,

but my seller will send me one, so he says!!!

some pics, you can tell the difference...

from altezza

comparing both, the one with the broken plug is the original beams readtop.

Clearly see the difference, and will not work.

well, no really updates but i have been looking around the previous posts from turnip and 2bcelica and help from Batman, it seems the swap is easier than most other swaps.

This will be the slowest swap ever, its being done by me. Since its a low miles engine, i will swap first and then change the pumps and belts and stuff couple of miles down the road. first i got to make sure it runs.

I am a learner with pictures, so i will post every pic that i get so that everyone benefits, this swap is a good alternative to a turbo and looks close like OEM, as well.

I will start backwards, start with the wiring first and im tempted to run the amp wire through the firewall, might as well since ill have it all naked. I will change all the wiring loom, so i will have chance to do this....

here is what i learned today..

so far if im not wrong here are few of the steps right?

again the credits go to my friends, this is nothing i invented

extend the maf wires

on EA1

bridge together pins 4 and 17
bridge together pins 2 and 12 (not confirmed)

move white plug (pin #18) to dark grey plug into (pin # 17)

For Cruise dark grey interior harness (pin #10) tap into blue/white stripe wire from the ECU

For SRS run a wire from EA1 through the engine harness (or body) to the light grey interior plug (pin #5)

this is basically, i have seen the wiring diagrams and seems ok. guess its almost plug and play...

the ignitor (now i know what it is) on this pic dissapear, so less weight

the fuel filter right?

the charcoal canister, LOL i finally found it

and the famous EA1 plug so that everybody knows.

another view, this is where i would tap in to run the srs wire.

i will post more things as i go understanding.

some slow updates, i work on it every now and then, cuz, its not going it till next month....

i will reroute the wiring, so i can get the diagnostic port, the maf and the vacuum sensor to the drivers side and then the rest of the harness to the passenger side...

im redoing all the split tubing with new stuff and extending the wiring and tucking it to make it look more oem.

6strings send me a wire harness that just had to DIE!!!!!

some wire carnage...

srs blue wire

linking the ea1 plug wiress, remember what i had said before, which plugs need to be converted to link.

my new friend for 20 bucks as the cheap soldering iron gave up

detail work, what i do is put the wires together and use a thin strand of copper wire and loop around, then solder over this, this way there is no probability of the solder to break or get loose...

untangled the main harness and it was all oily and some waters, guess from pressure washing before it came out

extended the MAF wires and the vacuum sensor wire, pending the diagnostic bay

and they are waiting to be placed, these are the vzv and maf plugs, i had to cut them to place them in a new location, remember that i will extend the harness and want it to go in in the stock location

new loom, after i finish the wiring, all the harness will be wrapped in new loom and new electric tape properly rated.

will finish this maybe over the weekend. Still waiting on my sensor.

i did not unhook since im a noob, and im rerouting the wires so that to correctly get the measures, i did it in place, but you dont have to do all this, you can extend the wires as is, i believe. i just did it cuz i wanted to double check the wires sice i found oil inside and water in one of the looms, and im perfectionist.

and i have all the time of the world, and wanted to learn... lOL...

Yeah I have no idea what I'm doing really. My wife was mad cuz she says that I'm just going to waste all the money I put in it by screwing everything up and that I should just get a professional to do it. I say that I just saved myself about $500 doing the the auto to manual swap that I completed today! I've even started takin the engine apart and its really simple...Hey when I get to the wire harness do you think that you could help me?

i am not going to be using the gt harness, it will be taken away completely. So i will only use the beams wires.

the beams has ists own vacuum sensot located on the rubber hose

I think this is the part number 89420-20300 maybe I haven't looked at the BEAMS harness correctly, I'll double check.
are you using the stock fuse/relay box or the BEAMS one?

SWEET thats awesome. I hope he sent you the right one this time.. Its good that the seller took the time to do all that. Most would probably just say "warranty is for engine only not sensors"

well the original contract is that i bought the engine only if he sent me the sensor, cuz he told me it was broke, so he accepted, he has had that engine listed for a while.

but he kept his part. too bad i cannot swap yet, so well i will not get the warranty claimed, so it was my fault.

well winter came, damn its been near 20 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit in the garage, so i decided to bring the work in the house.

Need to complete the harness as i extended a acouple of wires and decided to replace all the wire loom. I have it ready now to continue working...

i know i have posted in other posts but this is my progress thread.... some nice goodies..

finally got the speedometer

and a descent exhaust, after the fiasco of loosing that ebay auction!!!!!

haha, but go get a napkin, dont want that drool in the keyboard now!!!

KAKIMOTO racing exhaust, only 3000 miles in it...

oh, and this will add 20 HP top my car...

JK, but he really did cut me a break in the price and got it in 3 days by fedex.....

It was time to clean the garage, move the beams out of the way and do some brooming.

JDM dust anyone?

so the fun will continue... Stay tuned.

yup, curious thing, is that there is a noticeable difference in axles, i may keep a hybrid setup, using what i have from the swap, and completing the axle with mine, ill post a pic in the moring to show the difference, my axles are wimpy anyway, and least the first portion can still be JDM.. lol,

yes im being careful.. thanks... is a new experience.

the only thing keeping the engine is the side mounts lol,

Im a noob, i messed up the core heater of the a/c so i guess i have to get a new one, and put it in while im at it...

I spilled the fuc....oil last night, the rear mount heard so many new names thumbsdown.gif , and i used gojo as bodywash. But all is good, still on the way.

Boy, never thought it was going to be so fun cwm13.gif , the engine is coming out tonight.... thumbsup.gif

if the beams works i may start posting some things for sale. Not now.

just as a peek... but not now, lol

starting to tear down the engine.

the heater core pipe, did you crack it ? You should of just disconnected it from the water line on the motor frown.gif get in there and try to make that round again, or else it will leak forever (very bad). When you eventually put a new hose/clamp on it just make sure it's tight and look for leaks after...

The A/C line is just dented right ? no problems unless it's cracked.

ya ! motor's out ! change your fuel filter with an OEM one !

i dont think the a/c lines are cracked, but i hate to try to fix the heater core and still leak, once im at it might as well get a new one. Especially if its getting ready to crack on the inside.

Now that i see it, not as easy to get the engine out. Im thinking to change the timing belt, the pulleys and waterpump now!

Gojo is a maker of heavy duty hand degreaser, the stuff you use after doing work on the car to wash the "blackness" off your hands, like LAVA soap, GOOP, etc, you've had to use one of them.. ...

He had to use it as a bodywash cause he was entirely coated in grease/oil/soot. laugh.gif

finishing the harness from the beams, i have noticed the subtle differences...

the srs plug i think it goes to pin 4 and not 5 in the light grey and the white plug in the usdm has way more wires goin to it and so is the dark pin ON THE BEAMS... SO MANY WIRES.....

USDM HARNESS

BEAMS HARNESS this is where you have to do the repining of the clutch start, and where the srs wires come to...

The USDM white plug has a brown, white and brown wire that im trying to identify? what were those...

The beams dark grey plug has a yellow, brown, gray and white/blue wire that are extra and missing the blue/white..

My car has cruise, and maybe this beams had abs, or any other sensor, i would like to find out if these are important....

Been browsing the electrical manuals and its tedious..

the SRS wire is PIN 4 on II1 (light grey harness) the blue wire. That gets power from the SRS fuse in the bay and on your 97 it goes to the light on the cluster.

On the USDM white plug (II2) pin 14 brown and pin 16 white go to your OBDII connector. Brown is ground labeled SG and the white goes to the SDL pin from the DLC to the USDM ECU.
Pin 9 violet is for the ABS
Pin 15 is a shielded ground, also for the OBDII DLC, just grounded.

QUOTE
The beams dark grey plug has a yellow, brown, gray and white/blue wire that are extra and missing the blue/white..

The wires go to the OBDII connector for the beams = pin 7 yellow is SIL, pin 8 blue/white eventually goes to TC, pin 9 grey goes to TAC. (page 3 -7 in the beams manual, top of the page)

and some pics

USDM DLC

opps, posted wrong pic...I posted the 7a DLC, not the 5s DLC...I'll get that up later.

Beams DLC

If you try to hook up your OBDII connector it's important to get the wires in the right pins. The USMD OBDII DLC uses pins 2,4,5, and 16. The Beams uses 4,7,9,13, and 16. I don't know if a USDM scanner will read the jap signals...

basically, if you aren't gonna tackle the OBDII DLC, those wires are meaningless. To have the car start properly, run and drive just fine, just forget those. They seem like more of a hassle than what their worth.

well done on getting the engine bay cleaned, so apart those plugs any others left to do? also have you got around to fixing those water lines or is that next?

Yeah wiring, axles, exhaust, heater core, I may try to start engine without the radiator to see if it even starts.

Oh, I need to do regular maint, oil, thermostat, tranny oil, and this is without timing belt change or clutch. Engine itself is only 35 k.

So I will risk to start. Oh and not to mention I will have to see about hybrid axles.

Won't wire it until I get those plugs.

Congrats !

don't try to start it without the radiator, or any other fluids for that matter, be safe, it's a big investment. Just take your time and get everything together.
It would of been a bit easier to put the harness on the engine before you put it in the bay.

again congtrats !

nope, i will use the inners from the beams and outers from my s54. The inners look more beefy. my swap did not come with complete axles.

will try to get the radiator set up then..

almost getting most of parts and waiting for good weather,

the interesting thing i found today is that the inner left half shaft for a 3sge beams is part

4304032010

for 1sttoyotaparts is Inner cv joint, celica, w/o turbo, gt-s, left 1986 - 1989, hmm interesting..

the inner right half shaft is 4303032010

Inner cv joint, celica, w/o turbo, gt-s, right, manual trans 1986 - 1989

but i could not find the outers.

I like to have the beams axles for my swap. but the axles were cut,

I was thinking i can do beams inners, and GT outers. (hybrid)

Wat u tink?

Or maybe look into some outers like some have done with the e153 tranny. Just thinking of building better axles.

It seems like I read somewhere that the GT axles could take up to around 300 ft. lbs. of torque, but I could be mistaken. Better safe than sorry, so I say carry on with the BEAMS axles if possible.

You are making excellent progress with this. You aren't that far from me. One of these days, I will have to make the short drive to Tennessee to see this in person!

Sandblasted exhaust header, awaiting ceramic paint.

Radiator and hoses installed...

shiny new Azz, JDM baby!!!! Kakimoto!!!

some setbacks..

vaccum sensor in the way of the brake reservoir..

but not that difficult to fix

oh almost forgot, i had a brand new rear mount

and cleaned the crossmember.

wow, how long has it been, had not worked much until yesterday and today, here is an update.

To fix the heater core i had to get the dash out, and i had to disconnect a whole bunch of crap.

I will risk the heater core pipe, i was able to fix it, and I installed a new heater core,

also the whole dash is almost back in, the wiring is 90% done.

rust prevention was done for the dash metal mount.

Installed new grounds, also had to make a custom cpu mount,

as i extended the wires, the harness comes where it should come... haha, what a perfectionist..

only problem is this piece of bastard crap, fuel filter. it was a fuc... PITA to get the old filter out, and the new one wont go in, hope the thread is till good.

Whats missing,

The speedometer, the axles, the exhaust and a little bit of wiring.... Of course the fuel filter....

Time is a COMING<
