Do I need to put oil in my oil filter when changing the oil in my 96 GT?
Or just screw it on and then add all the oil to the oil fill?

But to answer your quick question so the mods can close it down, you do not have to put oil in your filter when replacing it. When you turn your car on for the first time the filter will fill with oil, so after letting the car run for 30 seconds or so, shut it off and recheck your oil, as your filter will now be full and you'll be ~ 1/4 quart low.

I just did my oil today, on the box of the oil filter Toyota P/N 90915-10004 it says to lube the seal with fresh motor oil, I found out why as I had difficulty turning it the 3/4 turn after finger tight as instructed.

You always want to lube the seal when replacing the filter. The OP was asking if they fill the filter with oil prior to installing it.


This would be fine on a car with the filter on the bottom of the motor (subarus, for example) because once installed the oil will stay in, but the 5S is side-mounted, so you'd probably spill oil everywhere when installing, and whatever you don't spill out will simply drain into the oil sump before you're done topping off (thanks gravity).
