well, what wheels are they.
if they are crappy wheels to begin with then paint them. If they are quality then have it done right and powder coat them. -------------------- |

Mine are powder coated and it's the only way I'd ever go. You can find guys to do them for like $150. The paint will chip very quickly. Powder coating them will make it stay forever and won't scratch when you clean them like paint would.

Hmm, powdercoating's only 150? That's pretty attractive. FWIW, I'm planning on rattlecanning mine...manphibian's wheels always looked good. If I do have to redo it every 6 months, so be it.

Hmm, powdercoating's only 150? That's pretty attractive. FWIW, I'm planning on rattlecanning mine...manphibian's wheels always looked good. If I do have to redo it every 6 months, so be it. Don't go to major place. There are family owned shops that do it cheaper to get an edge on the competition. If you are looking for the "cheap" route, don't paint them. Trust me. I spent over 50 dollars in paint and clear coat when I tried painting them first before getting them powder coated. Needless to say, they had a few runs, the clear notoriously turned yellow and each wheel didn't match each other or the car, and judging from the first time I had to clean brake pad dust off them, the paint would have been ruined, easy. Powder coat allows for them to be easily cleaned, and you're going to spend the money you would have spent on powder coating them after just a couple paint jobs with rattlecan car paint and clear coat, and they'll look like crap throughout the process. So, at least for me and what I know of each, I wouldn't ever paint them. It's more expensive in the long run, looks like crap, and is much harder to maintain and clean. well thye can coat mine for 80 bucks here, im in a small town. but i have heard they can also crack with time, and difficult to repaint them. Powder coating cracking or paint? Powder coat shouldn't crack. It is going to be very very strong and should last you pretty much for the life of your car. Refinishing a powder coated wheel is just as hard as refinishing a painted one. You just sand it down to bare metal and walla. It comes off easy if you use the appropriate tools. -------------------- ![]() |

It depends on how much it cost to PC them. I PC'd some wheels and it cost me almost $100/wheel. It was definitely not worth $400. The tire place chipped the PC of the edge and in order to get the wheel re PC's it needed to be stripped with aircraft stripper ($50) and then re-powedercoated ($100).
I said **** that and bought some duplicolor wheel paint and duplicolor clear (less than $50 for 4 cans). I sanded them, painted and cleared. It took a days work, but they turned out nice and I've had them for 2 winters (Canadian winter with Salt /sand/ice /snow) and they still look good. Plus I know if I ever curb them I can touch them up for $10 can of paint. If its a showcar, PC them, if its a DD take a saturday and paint them. Just make sure you do it without tires on. Luc. |

IT DEPENDS ON THE COLOR!
if you're doing black... rattlecan it if you're doing white... powdercoat my buddy has a set of evo rims (normally gunmetal) that we rattlecanned black... he rally races it and we havent had a single problem with them yet... they look like they were black out of the line... going on two years now... cost us like $30 to do them all do it right though.... sand it all the way down, primer, paint, paint, paint, paint, paint, clearcoat a lot... use regular duplicolor clearcoat, DO NOT USE "WHEEL CLEARCOAT", that stuff sucks This post has been edited by pittfirefighter: Dec 12, 2009 - 7:56 PM -------------------- Breaking Axles...

With my new set of rims, they where in good condition to start with.
sandblastered zinc primercoated (this is recommended if your rims have sharpe edges on the spokes etc, less likly to chip or flake off) then lastly powdercoated finish product is just awesome. now they're stored away like the good chinaware ![]() -------------------- |
