I'm sure theres a thread somewhere, but i just figured i might as well open a new thread since theres a lot of new people on this website. So back to the question, What's the best oil to run, or is the synthetic oil better?

Be weary of full synthetic, it works well, but it's known to mess up the seals. I put it in my car, a month later my oil crank case was empty. Found this out when I went around a hard turn and actually heard my engine grind, and my oil light flashed on. Stopped at the store, and found my oil empty and had to put oil in it on the spot.
Now don't get me wrong, I believe that full synthetic works, but not on super old engines. And honestly, my car only has 80,000 miles. 7A-FE. |

Castrol Magnatec (Which is Semi-Synthetic) for 3S-GE and 3S-GTE,
wont be too bad for the *S-FE either, But not critical, It's no high performance engine. There are certain conditions to be weary about when choosing a fully synthetic oil, search the net. The same things apply to oil flush aswell. -- For example, an older engine where organic oil residue is creating a seal against a worn seal, a fully synthetic wont have these same properties. I highly recommend oil catch tanks too, Install them and you'll see how much you're keeping out of the intake system after a few drives. Oh yeah, Redline oils are said to be the best for our cars, Especially our gearboxes and diffs. -------------------- Mike W

Purple Royal has been proven to be the #1 oil that you can use. But due to the price differences I stick with what ever is cheapest in synthetic at stores. There's a PDF file somewhere that proved this with cylinder tests.

So who do you believe the actual tests or people's testimonials? Once you go synthetic there is no turning back right? I mean once you start to use synthetic then you cant go back to semi-synthetic? I personally wouldnt waste my money on synthetic for the weak 7afe, and 5sfe economy engines. Unless of course your 7afe or 5sfe is turbo charged. Then thats a different story. -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

I use synthetic on my weak n/a 7AFE, I've always used synthetic in all my cars. Depending on the budget, sometimes I switch between synthetic blend and full synthetic. I stay w/full synthetic if I can though. Right now I've got Mobil 1 Synthetic in my car, 10w-30. Very happy with it, motor pulls strong and feels great. Low end torque is about all my motor has to offer, so I do what I can to maximize its offerings.
Ultimately, whatever oil you use, NOTHING substitutes for regular fluid changes and maintenance. -------------------- ![]() |

On the 5sfe or 7afe there is no need to waste the money on Mobil 1 synthetic or anything like that. The 3sgte, maybe, new performance car, yes. On these older economy engines all we need is regular old oil. I personally use the Valvoline high-mileage synthetic blend in both my cars. It's inexpensive, and works really well. -------------------- 1999 Celica GT

ya its kind of a waste to use synthetic blend on 7afe and 5sfe. I mean only if you're going to race your 7afe or 5sfe(which isnt really a good idea). I use valvoline, castrol, or any high mileage over 75,000 miles synthetic blend.

The use of oil also depends on the conditions of your environment as well. If you have reg oil and live in cold areas like where in live in Canada were we had a record low of -58 degrees celcius, I definitely recommend using a mix of 50/50 or 75/25 synthetic to regular oil. You can even use full synthetic but make sure you get new seals. You might find leakage.
Right now I use full synthetic Royal Purple 5w30 and I have only used that for my oil changes. Peace!! |

ya its kind of a waste to use synthetic blend on 7afe and 5sfe. I mean only if you're going to race your 7afe or 5sfe(which isnt really a good idea). I use valvoline, castrol, or any high mileage over 75,000 miles synthetic blend. hell even though i rallyx the hell out of my 7afe in the desert, i still use castrol gtx 5w30. the previous owner of the car used nothing but castrol gtx and when i dropped the oil pan, i was super surprised that there was NO sludge or anything in the pan with an engine that had 180,xxx miles on it at the time. the bottom end of the engine was amazingly clean, so i figure keep using the gtx. personally, i don't really see the benefit of using any high performance oil in the 7afe or even the 5sfe during normal driving. i can understand the need on the 3sgte for synthetic since there is a certain amount of oil running through the journal bearings on the turbo and higher engine temps when its pushed hard. i always used mobil 1 in the srt4 i had, and it worked very good, especially after running the canyons so hard you could see the hot side of the turbo glowing red. oh, and yeah, once you go synthetic, there is no going back. something about seals leaking is what i've always heard. |

I wonder what they look like on the inside. In my shop, the teacher recommends Fram, as he had several filters cut open and fram was looooooooooooooooong. You want the most filtration with the smallest amount of holes for better filtration, otherwise the larger the holes, the less good of a job it is doing. -------------------- 91 MR2 Turbo SW20, 92 MR2 Turbo SW20, 95 Celica GT ST204

I use Valvoline VR-1 Racing 20W-50. Have used it since I turbocharged my Celica in 2003. It's really not racing oil. Just regular good oil but it works.
