I ended up decided to go pick up this 2nd gen 3sgte engine and trans this saturday. I'm going to bring my compression tester along and just make sure how that is. I'll be posting pictures up as soon as i get them. I hope all goes well.

he said he had it in his 5gen last fall, but who knows if thats true. I was just gonna turn the crank over and see if thats all right and maybe give er' a go
I'll post up pictures if i pick it up this weekend. He said he got the wiring converted to his car so i figure i'd still need to get that sent out to get fixed This post has been edited by Stambo: Jan 17, 2010 - 11:56 PM -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

i'm pretty sure he has the afm, not positive. Igniter is pretty much a coil pack? correct?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I just got it today i'm sooo happy from just looking at it. It has the gt tranny from the 5gen is this gt tranny a e153 correct? Once i get some more time i'm gonna take a look through it and start making a list of what i need electrical wise. So i guess this will be part of my build thread. -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

5th gen Gt trans is sn S53, which is just horrible in my opinion lol Close, the GT trans is a C52, the GT-S trans is an S53. The easiest way to differentiate between the two, think of it this way, C-commuter. S-sport. The C52 has longer gears for better highway MPG. The S53 has tighther clearances inside, and shorter "sportier" gearing. The S53 also takes ATF rather than regular gear oil like the C52. -------------------- ![]() www.tweakdperformance.com contact@tweakdperformance.com |

I don't want to thread-jack, but this is interesting...so the 6th gen ST has the C52, so that means the GT trans from the 5th gen got carried over to the ST of this gen? And then the GT's S54 trans is an evolution of the GT-S S53...I assume.

Cam you think that 5th gen tranny would hold for stock boost for now? If so i was just going to use it till i get all the bugs out with the swap so it runs good before i start thinking about up'in the horse power.
Tomorrow morning i'm going to work to ohm out the sensors that i can to see whats good and bad. I also found a fuel pump relay on ebay i'm keeping my eye on. -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

All 5sfe "gt" 5th gens have an S53. Assuming its in good shape, it should work just fine. nice dude...i remember you posting in my thread on how you wanted to swap...your gonna have a blast with it....but it IS a lot of work.
My only advice to ya would be to take your time, dont rush it, and do it right because it will be well worth it. When your drilling the hole through the frame for the pass. side motor mount, i would suggest using thick thread rod, washers, and lock-tight nuts. That seems to be the best way to do it. I'll be following your thread man, and any questions you have feel free to ask, should be another nice build thread ![]() -------------------- ![]() I"M NOT A TOYOTA FAN, IM A FANATIC 1984 accord hatch 5 speed (T-Belt)-Junkyard 1991 VDUB jetta wolfsburg Ed. 5 speed (clutch)-junkyard 1988 Dodge Aries K (sold) 1969 Chevy El camino - Traded for celica 1991 Dodge Daytona-Traded for Celica 1988 Chevy Camaro-Work in Progress 1989 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 - For Sale 1995 Toyota Celica-Work in Progress |

I didn't take any pictures today but i took the intake manifold off, valve cover, turbo, manifold and cat off. Part washed the valve cover and intake off good. I'll take some pictures when i get to work monday. I was seeing how the shalf play was, the end play there isn't much what so ever but moving the impeller left to right there is some. I'm gonna bring it to school tuesday and check the play in the shaft to see if its in tolerance.

Also i'm looking for gt shifter cables if anyone needs to get rid of them. On a gt, you can use your stock throttle cable, but just make an extension bracket to mount it back a little bit and give the cable the proper tension it needs. You can also use the st185 cable, but its REALLY long, and you might have to creatively move it around so that it doesn't look bad. Not sure on the ST cable though. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

I am working on the intercooler piping atm, this is the way i'd like to run it. Although i'm not to sure about the charged side of the piping running over the down pipe.

i would reverse it.
the air going thru the hot side of the piping is just that, hot. the radient heat from the exhuast manifold isnt really gonna heat it up much more. the cold pipe on the other hand you want to keep as far from the exhaust/dp as possible to avoid heating the intake charge post intercooler. ![]() edit: if you have an ST radiator, you'll need to rig up a deal for the lower hose. no real way around it. (other than a GT or '4 radiator.) -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

Thanks guys, manny i got the intercooler piping rerouted pretty good, i'll get some pictures up when its welded up.
Today i ordered water temp, oil press. and electric boost gauge, and my bov http://www.nipponpower.com/product.phtml?p=1057 I havn't heard anything bad about those bov's and no compressor surge! Eta is next weekend to get it running, if tweak sends the harness out this weekend. -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

dude, this is comming along really nice...congratulations...just keep taking your time and banging away at it...it will get done.
maybe i missed it, but where are you having the wireing harness done? and how did you go about drilling the hole in the frame for the pass. side motor mount? did you use thread rod or some other method? that intercooler looks sick BTW This post has been edited by 95st-celica: Jul 12, 2010 - 5:31 PM -------------------- ![]() I"M NOT A TOYOTA FAN, IM A FANATIC 1984 accord hatch 5 speed (T-Belt)-Junkyard 1991 VDUB jetta wolfsburg Ed. 5 speed (clutch)-junkyard 1988 Dodge Aries K (sold) 1969 Chevy El camino - Traded for celica 1991 Dodge Daytona-Traded for Celica 1988 Chevy Camaro-Work in Progress 1989 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 - For Sale 1995 Toyota Celica-Work in Progress |

i ended up using about a 6" long bolt with the threads starting at 4.5" to the rest of the length of the bolt.
Tweak is doing the harness, i couldn't figure it out cause the guy who had the engine before me tried to make the engine run on only 2 ecu plugs and had a bunch of stuff cut, and was using speaker wire. The harness should be here within the week. I ended up getting a New gt radiator from carquest for $90 so i didn't have to end up rigging the lower radiator hose up. All thats left to do is get my bov welded on and get a few pieces of the intercooler piping welded up also. I'll have pictures of it sometime this week. The 3s just might start up this weekend -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

![]() ![]() So I decided i needed to flare my intercooler piping so the couplers wouldn't fly off. I Found this idea on a nissian forum somewhere on the web. All i did was weld a 2.5" exhaust clamp on one side of the vise grip, and welded a washer on the other. I grinded the wash down so it was round. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Final product ![]() Heres pictures of the intercooler piping and fmic all ready to go! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Not much of a sticker guy but i like this one for some reason ![]() -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... Its running! It boosts great and pulls hard. Although it idles a bit rough, and studders when staying steady on the gas. I think its something to do with the bov not sure. The icm might need a cleaning too not sure about that either. Besides those problems it runs great.

Congrats!
That bov MUST be recirculated as it stays open during idle and cruise situations, bypassing the AFM and causing a lot of issues. They have an anti stall kit to help with this, but you really should recirculate it for best performance. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

recirculate after the AFM, if you recirculated before, the AFM will be reading the same " air " twice, and thus causing undesire side effects. once the air goes through the AFM once, it's accounted for, so recirculated after and things will be fine, since you are venting it, it's missing that air and thus causing your describved issues.

after recirculating the the bov past the afm the car runs smooth now. Overall i'm very pleased with only doing the swap for so cheaply.
The car pulls hard even only boosting at 9 psi. I have a small boost leak some where thats why i think it wont get up to 12psi. -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

Not that to many people care, but my car has been running great since day one of the start up. I have had no problems what so ever, except the coolant temp. I have the stock 195 temp stat. in it right now. But the radiator fans are always on now after the swap. Has anyone had any problems with them staying on at all times? Maybe a coolant temp sensor being bad just giving the fans the signal to be on even when the car is first started?

Alright, i'll look up the wiring diagram so i can either put a resister in the a/c plug. Since i don't have a/c in my car. I'm using the gt radiator. The new gt radiator i got seems to be quite thicker than other stock gt radiators i've seen.
Death have you noticed any difference in engine bay/coolant temps when the fans are on full time vs. only at like 215 degrees? -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

since you have the GT rad you have the temp sensor plugged in the bottom right ?
and the AC plug/switch I'm talking about is near the firewall, near the wire harness boot, part of the chasis wiring, it doesn't matter if you have AC or not. -------------------- |

Death have you noticed any difference in engine bay/coolant temps when the fans are on full time vs. only at like 215 degrees? I haven't taken a thermometer to it or anything but just from knowing my car and it's average temps by feel and also the noticeable difference in heat haze I can see evacuating thru the large vent in my GT4 hood. for some reason with the ST's your fans will come on when you turn the key on/off....there is a way around it but it hasnt really bothered me much since the swap. It would be nice if they came on when the engine got to a certain temp. but honestly it helps keep it cool up untill it shuts off.
You can also look into a low temp. thermostat. I have a Gates 160* low temp thermostat that i am running and really like it. Next is a trans and oil cooler set-up. BTW the swap is comming along great man, any recent pictures of it? bad news, the lsd i got is the wrong one. I called the guys at mfactory and they wanted me to measure the ID of the final drive gear and the OD of the diff they sent me. Completely off. He says i have the final drive for a c56 trans which doesn't make sense i have a s54 trans bolted up to my 3s. So i guess i'm SOL on the diff. Even though on the website it clearly states LSD for 3s-ge/5s-fe s-series trans.....
I have plenty of pictures to upload tomorrow off the trans disassemble and gears and other goodies. -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

So guys I have my s54 gt trans torn all apart. Pictures speak louder than words...
![]() All torn apart. ![]() ![]() Out put shaft. ![]() Diff ![]() Starting to get a little confusing Mfactory sent me the wrong diff. ![]() Final drive gear is to big for the LSD. Talked to the company, they said i had a c56 ring gear. Even though i have a s54? I didn't bother to deal with it and just sent the diff back and got my refund. ![]() This is the syncro blocker ring set for 2nd gear. The two brass rings are the syncro blocker rings. That middle piece is a plate for doubling the friction surface area. You could think of this set up as a twin disk clutch set up. When you shift from 1st to 2nd you gotta slow down 2nd gear pretty quick so the syncro hub can mesh into 2nd gear's dog teeth. I ordered parts off a old mr2 topic with part numbers for the s54. Half of them were wrong. ![]() 1st gear and syncro blocker ring ![]() output shaft. ![]() 3rd gear and syncro blocker ring. It wouldn't be a bad idea for me to replace 3rd gear but toyota said its on national back order. It could take one week or a month.... ![]() 4th gear n syncro Painting the tranny case ![]() ![]() Looks new! Once i am 100% all the parts i have will work i will post all the part numbers up with pictures to match them so if you guys feel like rebuilding yours, you got the right numbers. It sucks that the LSD won't work but atleast i will have a fresh rebuilt transmission. -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

How hard is it to take the tranny apart like that ?? I got a quote from a shop when I wanted to install a lsd in my s54 with the tranny taken off the car already they wanted $800 just to install it without parts with a kaaz lsd it'll almost be $2k, is it really that time consuming and hard to do ??

Out put shaft
![]() ![]() Needle bearing, put a squirt of oil on all move parts and parts being pressed on. It makes things go a lot smoother. ![]() Needle bearing on the shaft. 1st gear goes ontop of the needle bearing. ![]() 1st gear. ![]() Don't loose this little ball bearing! I did and spent 30 minutes crawling on the ground to find it. ![]() No ball bearing in the little hole. ![]() ball in the hole... easy enough. Unfortunately I was in a hurry and didn't have time to take pictures of me pressing all the gears and bearings on the shafts. Ill print off some diagrams of an exploded view of the input and out put shafts to show how each part goes on. ![]() Put the diff back in the case. I didn't check bearing preload because i didn't replace the diff bearings because they all looked brand new. But remember where to put the shims on either side of the diff when you took it apart. ![]() Input and out put shaft bearings in and the bearing retainers holding them in. ![]() Shift forks. You have to have these connected to the input and output shafts to put everything in the trans correctly. ![]() Like so. ![]() You slide everything into place. ![]() Make sure the shift forks are all lined up and in "neutral" Lets put the reverse gear in. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reverse selector. ![]() ![]() After i got all this put together i shifted through all the gears and made sure nothing is binding up. If something is you have a problem. Don't just say it'll free up later cause it won't, you'll grenade your trans. Clean all sealing surfaces and lay a nice 1/8"-1/4" bead of rtv (black silicon) and lower the trans case on. It'll be a tight fit so don't be afraid to use a rubber mallet to tap the case into place. ![]() -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!

no lsd i sent it back for a refund. I didn't even think toyota had their own brand of rtv. Next time ill get some lol.
Without 3rd gear, Spent around $350 dollars. I would give you guys part numbers but some syncros very from year to year. I noticed a 96 s54 trans does not have the triple syncro set up for 2nd gear like a 97 does. I have more pictures of putting 5th gear on once i quit being lazy. Anyone have any opinions on what gear lube i should use? I was thinking of that redline shock proof stuff. Havn't heard anything bad about it. -------------------- 2nd Gen 3s-gte.... It lives!
