Also, sad to see that leave his hands. I wonder why he'd sell it after all that work...

In that case, someone needs to save it before some 16-year old gets his hands on it and goes "LET'S STREET RACE IT" and destroys it.

If it were local, I would sell mine in a heartbeat.

I've emailed him to see if he wants to trade. I love my MR2, but I would trade it in a heartbeat to get that car back. If not I have some money, so I might just pick it up this weekend and never ever let it go again.

Needs a respray on the front end, but I have a friend that can get it done for me.

Fingers crossed.

How does it get away with running filterless for so long? is there socks that you normally slip over the v-stacks?

There are pod filters that can be slipped on, but they hinder high RPM HP. I was trying to source a set of Jubiride mesh filters which are sandwiched between the stack and the ITB which prevents particles from falling in, but those stacks actually push air out between shifts - not to mention flames shooting up them (true story). I have found fried bugs along the ridge on the firewall that had been toasted by the backfire that used to come up the stack.

Why not keep the MR2 and trade your current Celica for it + cash? That way you don't have two 6GCs.

I traded my '96 25th anniversary for the MR2.

My guess is that the valves weren't seating fully and letting exhaust gasses (and unburnt fuel) back up into the intake. It only happened at really high RPMs (8,000+), and it ran really rich. Supposedly this guy (I think this guy. Whenever it was for sale last) had the motor rebuilt with new piston rings and replaced the valves. He also stated he put Skunk2 cams in it- despite the fact that no one makes 20V cams except for TRD, Toda, and HKS. He also said he put the stock intake back on for a while, which boggled my brain because the stock airbox along with the stock stacks are in my garage.

No reply from him yet.

Aha...I thought you posted current pics a while back in the 6GC pic thread, but I guess not. The Yelli Celli is one of my top favorite Celicas, just because of the engine bay...but I'm not entirely sure I'd give up an MR2 and RWD for it. Go for it though, it might as well go to someone that'll take care of it. What was your reasoning for letting go of it the first time?

I was moving out of my parent's place and I had the WRX. Bills were massing and I made the unfortunate decision to sell. There really wasn't much else I could have done, so I never really let go of the car. It upsets me to see it tossed on CL all of the time. Before I bought my '96 I waited for weeks for it to pop back up, and it didn't.

Was the Mr2 the same value as the ST 25th anni ? Don't know how well the mr2 holds its value over in the States but here, If you swap a 96 non turbo sports car for a 91 non turbo sports car you'd expect a bit of cash. Both cars being in average condition for their age I'd say nzd$3000 for the mr2 and 4400 for the celica?

96 celica ST with 220K miles vs. A 91 MR2 non turbo with 100K miles. The MR2 has a better value.

I got a reply from the guy and I might be going to get it this weekend. We'll see how it goes.

Make it happen, I know you can. It'll be great to see it back in your hands again, I truly believe you're the best person for this car (no offense to the other guys on here, but really, this is just meant to be. He let it slip through his hands once, a second chance only means it's GOT to be meant to be)

This car has a special place in my heart - it's cheesy, I know. SUPER cheese. Before I got my Celica, I'd ALWAYS wanted a 6th gen Celica, since they were new and like 30k. When I finally decided it was time to sell my 4Runner, I scoured craigslist and Auto Trader looking for a Celica to replace it with. In the process of doing that, I found this site. Once I saw the Yelli Celi, when Coomer still had it, I literally DREAMED about this car frequently. I knew whatever I got wouldn't come close to it, but the Yelli Celi was truly an inspiring factor for me, and motivated me to keep searching for a 6th gen until I could find one (that I could afford!) rather than just settle for an Integra or something like that. Long story short, as a graphic designer, I get to create all day... but my actual creative outlet is my Celica, and I owe a large part of that initial inspiration to the Yelli Celi. Thank GOD I've got a good aptitude for this stuff, otherwise I'd wind up having to cut my ear off or something laugh.gif

Anyway, sorry, I know that's all kind of off-topic. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and sending good vibes your way, I really hope this works out for you. I just think it's meant to be! Let's have a tiny mini meet if you get it, I don't care what condition it's in. We're long overdue for some kind of meet anyway. I'll even come up to WA if you're willing to meet up someplace closer to Oregon than Canada tongue.gif

Cool sounds good. I have to go down to Hubbard or some place like that (down by Woodburn) the first part of the day, I'm helping a coworker replace the window regulator in her BMW laugh.gif Should take me a few hours round trip. So I'm free probably after like 3. Rumor has it it's supposed to be nice-ish Saturday, maybe I'll actually wash my car for the shoot. Then again, maybe not... it IS the Pacific Northwest tongue.gif

Give me a call or text me Saturday and I'll come up to the 'couve

Ughh let's have that meet in NY, near the Buffalo area haha.

I read Coomer's engine bay renovation thread so many times, always envious of what he was doing.

Well the car is reserved for my tentative purchase on Saturday. smile.gif

The seller did enlighten me on a troubling issue. I asked for interior pictures and he sent me some from "a few months ago" and "the car has since then been broken into and the CD player and subwoofer were stolen"

So I asked for some current pictures. Doesn't really sway me on not buying it, but either the alarm didn't work or he didn't have it armed. I'm hoping there isn't any damage to the glass or to the interior panels.

other than that the interior is as I left it - the TWM shifter I installed, the eurostar shift knob I scored, the shift boot I made myself, the gauge cluster with the CF trim, etc. All of the fun mods I did myself.

I can almost taste it! hahaha

EXCELLENT! Text or call me Saturday, my plans have changed and I'm free all day. I don't personally care WHAT condition it's in (because I know whatever it's in, you'll fix it up right), but I'd love to get together, especially since it's actually supposed to NOT rain on Saturday!

Care to trade for a '97 ST? It has less mileage and is worth more than that old, worthless thing. You don't want that car, you really don't. Trust me.

That's the only thing that would concern me about living in the city with that car.

So he just emailed me current interior pictures. Looks like when the radio was stolen they took the radio bracket with it, and the steering wheel is a chromed out Grant wheel. Something you would see in an old Chevy C10 pickup with the driver rocking a mullet.

So if this all goes down I'm going to need a steering wheel and radio brackets. ASAP. Probably go down Drift Office and buy a Personal wheel... or a 7th Gen Celica/Rav4/Corolla S wheel.

Also, I sold it with the gauge cluster reading 80,xxx, which reflected motor mileage. Looks like its now reading 122,xxx. Not necessarily a problem, just something I noticed.

I've got an OEM 4 spoke wheel out of my '94 with the airbag, undeployed, both in EXCELLENT condition if you're lookin' to buy. Did the yelli celi have cruise control? I've got the cruise stalk, too. Currently it's in my car, but I have the replacement stalk for it now, which I'm endeavoring to swap out tomorrow anyway. Motivate me. smile.gif

I sure hope someone gets that car away from that idiot. A few month back he was trying to trade it for any turbo'd car he could find. A buddy of mine almost got it in a straight up trade for a 91 gsx LMAO. Good luck and cannot wait to see it back into great shape and some photos. Then once I get all my winter damage taken care of we can maybe have dueling yellow celi photos smile.gif

Michelle - all of the ABS wiring is gone from the car, and cruise control was removed when the 20V was swapped in initially, so a wheel with an airbag is as useless as a racing wheel in the event of a crash. Shoot me a price though.

Lazurus - I'm not sure all of the damage to the car was caused by this kid. I believe it was mostly caused by the kid I sold it to - vaughnz. As for the stereo being stolen and whatnot, he says he didn't lock it up and it was broken into with no forced entry. Replacing the steering wheel is understandable, as the car is hard to turn and the old wheel was flimsy. Whether or not the grant wheel was installed just as a functional replacement, or if he thought it looked good would be a good question.

Once I get it (provided I get it) and replace some parts we will all need to do a PNW meet so the Yelli Celi can be reaquainted with the community.

Wow, this thread is actually turning out to be a good one. I saw "The Yelli Celli is for sale again" and my first thought was who cares? It'll be for sale 30 more times and there will be a thread for it every single time. But that doesn't appear to be the case at all! Good luck today!

Greetings from the Denny's in Kelso, WA

So I met the guy at 11:15. Right away I was able to sum it all up - disappointed.

Let me list my findings:

- Front bumper has very little paint left.
- Passenger side skirt is MISSING
- Cobwebbed paint on the hood, back and front bumpers
- Dash is cracked
- CD player was stolen, console trim is fubar'd
- Ashtray missing
- Amp and sub were stolen from the back
- Alarm doesn't work anymore
- Driver side window WAS smashed in. Brand new window with no tint.
- Owner prior to this guy "installed turbo pistons and cams" with no documentation
- Driver side front splitter is trashed
- Tag inside the door from DOT says the car has been inspected by State Patrol and has a rebuilt title - yet the actual title has no brands on it?
- Paint is completely faded. Super light yellow paint now.
- Typical cam tick that 20V's do, but a little louder than I remember
- Needs new clutch
- Burns a quart of oil every 800ish miles
- All of the front end body panels are misaligned. The hood is rubbing the drivers side fender, the passenger fender has been pushed in, making it look like the door is protruding out.

I don't know what to say. I WISH I could say the car was in okay condition and I'm driving it home now, but I can't. I honestly had to walk away and reassess the situation. I want this car SO BAD, but it needs a LOT of work. It needs a complete paintjob, and new lip kit. DoGGy's TRD skirts would need to be replaced - and where are you going to find those?

I offered the kid $2,000, but I don't know... It needs about $3000+ in repairs just to get it to a good starting point. There is something wrong with the motor too. I know 20V's have no torque, but I couldn't get the motor over 6,000 RPM. It just struggled.

All in all I am really disappointed. The kid didn't disclose A LOT of information about the car, and now here I sit - eating my Meat-Lover's Trio and drink my cherry limeade and sulk in utter disbelief. I slept very little last night in anticipation of driving it back home. I got my hopes up, only to be let down.

Sorry 6GC, but Bonnie and I are going to have to think about this purchase. I snapped some pictures that I will post when I get home, so you can see the state of the car. It's sad.

And now I will finish my poor quality breakfast and make the 2 and a half hour drive back home, disappointed.

Wow. frown.gif

What the fu*k happened to it to get that damaged, was it in an accident? That sounds like a lot of crap gone wrong.

Having said that, I'm sure you can source parts here from members willing to resurrect the car...I know Dan has a dash sitting in his barn. Console panels can't be too hard to find, there are always cars parting out. TRD splitters aren't insanely hard to find either, and well, you'll just have to trash the other side skirt and buy a different set. Some body work would get rid of the alignment issues and paint can be cured as well.

Man oh manischevitz. That just positively SUCKS.

Like I said before, I say let a few more people come look at the car and reject it, hell, I'll even be a dummy prospect if it'll help! Then counter your offer with $1800. For that matter, if you're willing to buy it for $1800, I bet I could scare the kid into selling it to me for that amount. Then we could all just meet up and SURPRISE! You're the buyer. hee hee hee

For what it's worth, I'm willing to help however I can, feed me a little and I'll come up and help you restore it, we could at least get a good solid weekend in.

Perhaps. Bonnie and I would need to think about it. I would end up spending the $1200 saved on paint alone. It sounds like it needs a complete teardown, and I don't have the time, money, or space to do it. Its quite upsetting, really, but like Bonnie told me, "Maybe this was meant to be? Maybe this will help you let go of the car."

We didn't like the kid one bit. He was trying to be sneaky and disclose as little as possible. When I told him I used to own it, and started picking it apart he looked like he was going to s*** himself. Bonnie was on the verge of tears when we both agreed we would walk away for today. She wants it back as much as I do, but I trust her judgement, and when she says she has a bad feeling about someone or something I don't question it. Perhaps that is a woman thing...

Yeah, I've totally got a dash in my garage I can donate to restore this car. Just pay shipping and it's yours. That just seems like a lot of work to put into a car simply because it's an "icon" though. If this wasn't Coomer's car, I guarantee nobody would touch it.

No offense to Coomer, and I thank him (we all do) for creating this awesome site, but I don't really care that he car was his. He's pretty much abandoned 6GC, I doubt he even cherishes that car anymore. What I care about is that the thing is damned clean and has one of my favorite 6GC engine bays ever.

Sad to hear. Probably is a good thing you declined though, sounds like more work than it's worth at that price.

Like Michelle said, if you do at some point wind up getting it, let us know if you want help fixing her up. Would be more than happy to help get that car back on the road the way it used to be.

Sad, sounds just so far gone that its not really recoverable (would be easyer to start over on a stock 6gc) if you wanted something reliable anyway.

QUOTE

That does not really mean much, mine had a to be inspected by the dot when the first engine blew insurance comp. considered it a total loss but dot did not, I had the dot sticker but not a rebuilt title. (gray area between insurace and state)

I teared up a lil bit on that one..... If you end up getting it, I'm sure with help from other members in the way of elbow grease, sourcing very cheap parts and stuff it would work, but that is of course up to you and your fam. Let us know what's up and keep that kid's number or whatever cuz if it's still unsold when I get back, I will have enough to get her and get her up and going how she is supposed to be. Keep us in the loop.

I don"t think it's a Coomer thing.
When you HAVE to let something go and regret it from the start, the chance to get it back is a HUGE shot ot adrenelline! I know the feeling!
If I were there & had a garage, I would DEF give you ALL the space & time you wanted, & get elbows in with you!!
Any one around there have extra space to share if they decide to do this??

{ If there was ANY chance I could get my favorite car back, I would sell the Camaro in a heartbeat!! I have some fond memories with my girls when they were babies in that car... frown.gif ... }

What an emotional journey this is for the 2 of you!!
I have some extra interior plastics that came with it when my Bride bought it. IDK what's there. I can find out Monday sometime. I have all 4 headlight rubbers in great shape too!
Wish I knew what to do...

As Always, my Bride & I wish you & Bonnie the BEST.

This thread is quickly making me very sad; I remember when I first joined 6gC and just drooling over Coomer's car - it was the epitome of cool. The condition it's in now is plain deplorable; I can see why you're hesitant and I don't blame you one bit. I wish you and Bonnie the best in whatever you decide but you two should definitely think about it...maybe she's right and it's just time to let it go.

Hard to say but calling it now: Yelli Celli is no more.

Such a sad day in 6gC history.

DAng, did these idiots rally it, or what, why is the paint falling off from the fromt bumper, the front splitter may be fixed with FG, the sideskirt may be replaced if found.

the engine work will be the problem..

Dang, 2000? hmm maybe 1700, or the most 1800. The kid is nuts if he is going to sell it for what he wants.

GL, hope you make the right choice

Rare car, yes!...But $3k worth...hell no. Keep us updated if anything happens with this.

Oh I should mention also that I have some very very excellent condition interior plastics that I would be willing to contribute, should you decide to buy the car back and restore it. I was saving them for myself should I want to use them in the future, but I'd totally be willing to donate them for this! smile.gif

Kelso isn't that far from Portland, is it? I'm thinking I'll go up and look at the car myself and then offer him $1500 for it. But only if Matt & Bonnie decide that they want to go for it if he accepts whatever they offer him.

Kelso is only an hour north of Portland, but I am going to wait to hear back from the kid. I left the ball in his court, but I think that if I were to get another Celica I think I would want to build it up myself. With the motor in questionable shape, and the exterior in obvious poor condition, I would feel much better starting with something I know the history of. There are two years that are unaccounted for, and its all when it went downhill. With the owner's inability to be straightforward with me (please, sideskirts just don't mysteriously FALL OFF, and you don't just NOT notice that the driver's window has been replaced. Please, I'm not stupid) I am really reluctant to pull the trigger no matter what the price is.

I suppose I will wait to see what his next move is, but I'll most likely pass and wait for a stock or near stock Celica and build it up to "Yelli Celi Status". That way I will know everything about it.

Sounds like good reasoning, can't really argue with that. Good for you, I support whatever the outcome is.
