I have been looking into swapping my 1994 ST 1.8L w/ auto tranny for a jdm 3sgte. Is it possible to use with awd tranny in CA?
I am aware that the Japanese do not have EGR systems. Is it possible to use a intake manifold and egr system from a close relitive in california for smog purposes? Will the gt-4's gas tank mount in the same spot on the 6G st? I wish to achieve awd, is their a large problem that I am overlooking? Because not many people are doing this it seems.. Is it because lack of drivetrain/suspension parts in the US? Is their holes to accomidate the driveline bracket? Cat converter? exauhst, will it get in the way of the driveline? I am assuming the front ST halfshafts wont spline up with the jdm tranny? Will I be able to use the front hub assembly? How would I cope with the rear diff between the rear halfshafts? Hi welcome to the board.
All the issues your bring up can be easily solved once you get the awd drive train in. The st/gt celica has the same frame from the back of the driver seat on forward. The main problem you will face with an AWD conversion is getting the rear end suspension welded in properly. You need to consider when you cut out the stock rear-end to make room for the AWD parts; you are modifying the unibody and frame. If you can find someone who is skilled enough to do that, then everything else would be a breeze. to answer your questions: Since you have a 94st you must put in a 94+ mr2 turbo 3sgte in order to be bar and smog legal. You need to transfer all the mr2 emission stuff over. The jdm motor will not work because of the egr and the ecu can not be BAR. Bar and smog does not check what transmission you use. The gas tank will mount up according to how you modified your car. Everything from the driver seat back will have to be custom to make the car AWD. Some people use a gt4 subframe so everything from a gt4 will transfer over. Others custom made a rear subframe therefore they had to use a fuel cell. In order to pass the bar you must use a OEM gas tank. Depending no how anal the bar inspector is, they might let you slide with a gt4 gas tank. In order to officially pass smog and bar you must use a MR2 gas tank. The exhaust will run the same route as gt4's exhaust. After all the gt4 already has awd and an exhaust. The st axles will not work. You will need hybrid axles, basically you will be using gt4 awd axles mixed with st axles. you should be able to use the ST hub assemble. how you cope with the rear diff and half shaft depends on how well you source your parts and how good you can fabricate everything. To conclude you questions. You have two routes to go. the first route is to weld in the GT4 rear subframe. This will allow you to bolt up all the OEM gt4 parts and make your st celica into a gt4 just by swaping over aparts. The second option is to go full custom and make your own subframe and source different parts to make your car AWD. |

Import GT4 from japan to Guam. Leave it on island for 6 months, and while its sitting take a vacation accumulate around 30,000 miles on it (seems impossible right?) then register it, and ship it to america and it will be perfectly legal....lol, you can weld, do it illegally or wait around another 8 years.....just another option if you belive me ^_^

So the rear supframe will not bolt onto the 6g st?
Is it possible to bolt it on? I do have welding experience from the srjc, any pics on this topic? How could I get ahold of the mr2 parts i need? So you say theres no way to legally run the 3sgte in california? even with 94 mr2 egr system and intake? would JDM ECU not controll the egr? Im assuming aftermarket ECU's are ref's worst enemy? would it be a horrible idea to just swap for the 2.2L 6g engine, and bolt on the awd tranny and build up engine for hp/torque? Do replacement parts come from japan? |

I have all the rear AWD pieces you are going to need to do the conversion. I can even include an AWD transmission if you dont have one. PM me for pricing.

read my post again.
nothings bolts up. search the forums for pictures. you most likely will need to get a mr2 rear clip. Call around your local engine company or ebay. like i said in my previous post; ONLY way to get it smog legal is to use "everything" in a mr2 turbo. No if and or buts. Will jdm ecu work? yes it would, but will NOT pass smog or ref. read my post again, the awd drive train is the hardest part. If you manage to get it in, you can put what ever motor you want in there. replacement parts come from where ever the celica gt4 was made, EU/japan... ect. I'm pretty sure the dimensions in the rear are different, that the coupe is more narrow. I think you'll have trouble fitting all the parts necessary, but I could be very wrong.

easy solution, get an ST185 easy? why wouldnt i just keep the 3sgte as my goal in that case, ![]() Are you saying bolt on the ST185's intake manifold onto the 3sgte? This post has been edited by st94: Mar 9, 2010 - 8:29 PM |

flip lights suck.
![]() not to mention they are scarce as ever and over priced, best deal I ever found is a 88 alltrac with 125xxx for 3500. would it be wrong to use another make engine/drive train in my celi? I do honor Toyota.. |

I do honor Toyota.. You sound like someone with no money but big dreams... To convert your car, you will need to spend around 10,000$. No part of the awd system bolts up. The whole rear end of the car has to be cut up and welded with a lot of custom fabrication work (hope you know how to do this). Besides all that, the fact that you have a coupe makes it almost impossible to do because the rear section of the car is totally different. Use the search feature and look up some of the people who have attempted this conversion to learn more about it. And NO, once you swap your car, it will no longer be smog legal. Especially in california. PS. its a lot easier to change the flip lights then it is to convert your car to awd and make it smog legal. I have plenty of money, Im just not gunne go throw it away on something i can never drive. Welding two clips would be a possible way, however clips are usually cut in different spots. I beleive I would have the knowlage and skill to weld two clips.
you do have a point about the flip light thing haha P.S. 10K if you want your momy to have her mechanic do it for you!!!! Welding+Skill= some flawless **** beleive me. |

If you have the knowledge to weld 2 clips together, then you would have the knowledge to know how bad of an idea that is. As for the price, its about 10k if you do your own work for all of the parts, and it will never be street legal, especially in california. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

I do honor Toyota.. you dont want to spend 3500 on a car that has what you want. bu rather spend 10K on a illegal car? It makes no sense. buy a 88 altrac at 3500, and use the 6500 to change the flip lights. its easier. Nothing is cheaper. I am doing a beams swap by myself. So far 4k, not including the car. and these engines are a drop in. no welding, or cutting. lagos is right. ask Jmeyer, he has a post and he is doing what you want. Its not a drop in the bucket.. ![]() ![]() http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showto...68701&st=20 -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... Bad things happen when your using some peice of cr*p welder from harbort freight, and probly dont know how to use a welding machine regaurdless like most on these type of forums that call themself "Welders". My fathers a welding inspector and does xrays, any teaches me as much as he possibly can(We have any type of arc you wanny make ![]() I have also completed the local JC's welding course w/ certificate, and attending the Auto program(almost completed w/ certificate) One who sais it "cannot be done" has doubt in their own physical abilities. ANY THING COULD BE DONE IN THE WELDING WORLD, its all about propper fitup, enginering, and common scence. Welding two clips together would be a whole different car than my ST, welding the two clips for track use, was what i was saying on by the way IMO ![]() |
