i've always been an admirer of this gen celica and toyotas in general. i have a 91 turbo mr2 and after selling my 93 alltrac i thought another daily would be nice. i dont really know much about the 5s motor. but after some research and about a half year of looking for a 6gc i finally found one.so last friday and made the couple hundred mile trip from houston to austin and back to bring it home. its a black 94 GT hatchback. the car had been in storage for 2 years but after a battery change and a fresh tank of gas it started right up and made it all the way home without a hickup. My primary purpose for the celica is to have a comfortable, sporty looking and reliable car i enjoy driving. thus far i'm not dissapointd its smoother and quieter than any of my previous vehicles, plus more fuel efficent and after the tune up i can determine nothing wrong with the motor.

i've talkd to many on the forums while searching for my car and options for it, and am glad to have found a place where so many enthusiasts are willing to offer their advice and share their knowledge.like many others here i wanted to start cataloging my progress. both to se how far my car has come and to try and offer something back to the community

so thanks to everyone who has helped me out. feel free to comment or offer suggestions and pics and writeups of my progress will be coming soon

peace

-jec

post pics of your car!

couple of quick pics in the 1st post

mostly i plan on modding in such a way that leaves it a comfortable daily. so no drop or exhaust. but from what i've learned thus far from my projct cars i can do any modding untill the car has been maintained properly. so last night was an oil change, new cap, plug and wires, flushing some fluids, an exhaustive search for leaks(found none thumbsup.gif ) and worn suspension components. then the mechanical issues i knew about from the previous owner were the radio didnt work and the pass window regulator is broken. and some problems with the paint

so this morning i'm happy to say maintnance is done and a log has been started. replaced the regulator and the window has full function and the radio now has been replaced.

as far as what mods i have lined up. i'de like to take it one step at a time. new steering wheel this month. and with a little help from jim middle of next month i'll start addressing the exterior with some new body pannels, and a repaint

cost me about 800 but thats was for the primer, color, clear hardner, reducer, and some misc measureing cups, tapes, and solvent.

i'm prolly in it another 300 bucks in sand paper, misc hardware

and 70 bucks to have all the glass pulled and replaced

paint is from a local place called johnson paint supply in dickinson TX

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gentex-261-Auto-di...6#ht_500wt_1221

same model but found mine for 50bucks w/ temp sensor.

btw if you get this model i already tested this with a 12 volt powr supply on my bench

pink - +12v (autodim and compass/temp power)
black - ground
light green/black - temp sensor
black/white - temp sensor

OPTIONAL
-----------

yellow - battery(if you get the version with map light)
dark green - side mirror defog (need to pull heater strip out of a chevy suburban/ gm truck)
dark green - side mirror defog
gray - reverse light (will turn off autodim when you backup)

also if you dont have the mounting tab use the metal napa one not the plastic ones from autozone/oriley(they will not hold the mirror secure and it'll vibrate as you drive)

napa part # 730-2023

good luck

any updates? you get that opti-coat put on? paint looks great though, cant wait to see how she looks when coated, will have much more free time now that you dont need to wax your paint or really try hard to keep her clean!. think yours will be the first opti-coated 6gc ive seen!.

well its been a while since i've really been able to work on the cars. But recently i've been really motivated to work on the celica again so i thought i'de share. also mods could prolly move this thread to the project section if anyone sees this. As always, sorry for the terrible phone pics

had this sitting in my shed for a while now so i descided to get it on the trailer and into the shop. a couple of months ago

but then got sent to chicago for work so it sat. untill this evening when i got back

my dinky hoist cant lift this with the tranny attached and my other bay has the rav in it so i cant use the beam and chain puller. If the tractor fit in the shop i could lift it and drive the trailer out but for now it looks like i'm gonna have to work in the trailer

petty happy i got to spend a couple of hours on it,(even though most was tring to figure out how to get it on the engine stand) but i did get the intercooler heatshields. and exhaust side brackets, manifold and turbo off the motor

no way it'll be ready to drop in before the meet this weekend. but i am excited i got the time off and can spend thanksgiving with the family. and catch the tx celica meeton sat

got a couple of options with the celica/mr2 parts laying around. but simplest will prolly be the s54 since its that only complete tranny/axle set i have plus its already in the car.

also i'll prolly have to pm you and ask some questions as i get closer to being ready to drop this in.

chugged away at it a little more this evening. got the intake manifold, fuelrail, valve cover hoses and wiring moved out of the way, and tried to label everything i could. The motor looks pretty good no signs of oil leaks and under the valve cover still looks silver.

when you guys clean your intake manifold do you just call a machine shop and ask them to drop it in a parts washer? i've never done it before and have several parts i wanna clean up and paint.

All depends on what your plans are. If you're going to drop it in stock then you can probably get away with cleaning it yourself with a good degreaser. But if you plan to build it and separate all the pieces then the machine shop will clean them anyways.

I've been snooping the forums and online for parts, I came back from the meet kinda late last night, swung by the shop and found these.

still on the fence about breaking apart the motor since my power goals are pretty modest.

also question for those guys who have gone awd, gt4 brakes or done a 5x114.3 rear conversion. My searching seems to indicate the rear hubs on the gt use the same wheel bearings as the gt4. Does the rear hub on the gt also accept the rear gt4 spindle? i was gonna press one out to compare but thought i would ask incase someone knew already.

BTW. even though they live 88miles away(i clocked it on the way home) and they made me feel old lol, It was nice to meet malhar and edgar last night.

got to put in a couple hours tonight before i had to pack up since i head out in the morning . got the wiring harness off and all the brackets holding the tranny to the block. all i have thats left is to lift it up so i can remove the transmission and get the motor on my stand.

also my radiator sprung a leak from a hairline crack in the plasic top. so it looks like i'm ordering a new rad. advanced has a replacement like oem with plastic tops for 80 bucks or an all aluminum one for 100. the plastic has served well for the last 160k miles and 20 years so i dont doubt its sufficent to do the job but i'm inclined to go the all aluminum for 20 bucks more just to have it. anyone have any experience on these units?

well back in town for jury duty tomarrow morning. It did give me a few hours after church to plug away on the motor though. finally got it off the trailer (with my tractor) and removed the tranny, clutch and pressure plate.I also took off the ac compressor, ps pump , alt, and the brackets holding them all on. I have a couple of bolts on the flywheel that are just about rounded off. i was gonna weld a nut onto the head of the bolt and try that, unless anyone has any better ideas

aside from that i started putting some if the other stuff back together

a little cleaning , paint and some steel braided lines for the turbo

cleaned out the TB real good with carb cleaner then got that misc sensors and brackets back on the intake manifold.

a quick pic of some of the stuff ready to go once the motor is ready

i wanted to get a pic of the of my tractor engine hoist putting the motor on the stand, but my phone died as i was snapping the above pics.also My radiator arrived too so i'm gonna need to get that in once i have all these parts moved up far enough to fit my car in the shop.

also just a random pic of the car from earlier

well it took a lot of work by hand to get to this point . i'm gonna find a place with a buffing wheel rather than spend more time one it.

on a more productive note. i ordered new bearings for the timing belt tensioners through amazon to help with 6gc. I usually use ebay if it helps the site i'll make the switch.

also i got a real camera to take pics with so hopefully that'll make the images less blurry

had a little time this evening so plugged away at the motor a bit more. had to lose the flywheel before i could get it on the stand , but also got the new cam gears on and crank, lower cover, mount, timing belt, idlers, waterpump, coolant hardlines and most of the hoses off. aside from that just a lot of cleaning with the wire brush and hopefully soon i'll be getting a bit of paint on there.

quick question is this blocked off port actually something. or just another potential oil drain?

got the W2A heat exchanger and pump today from bsamps. Ben you did such a great job packing the stuff up i almost had to go front mount cause i couldent get it out of the box, thanks for taking the time bud

also got a little paint on the block and everything off that need to be off before i set it back on the engine stand. i only have a few days before i leave for work again so i've been tring to spend at least an hour on it in the evenings, consequently my shop is a mess.

also the first of the parts i ordered via amazon link from 6gc, it's cool to be able to support the site and get to feed my habit at the same time haha. i may have to get a little point and shoot from amazon too i've been using my wife's cannon and its too big to run around with i'm am afraid i'm gonna break the lens or something.

thanks

got a couple things today.

i bought a similar rainguard a couple of years ago from a guy here on the forums last one was engraved though. sold it but descided i wanted another one and these look almost the same as the last one i had. The aluminum is a bit rough rougher it'll need some polishing and deburring, but overall i think its pretty good quality and maybe a little thicker?

still waiting on a couple of parts so i can take the rotating assemby to get balanced

Oh my god you've been holding out on us! Such a clean build!

I really like how you handled the water injection. Aren't you concerned the nozzles are too close to the chambers? And how are you controlling the flowrate?

thanks, Not holding out though just not at home much with my summer work schedule. i took a lot more step by step pics but posted these mostly as a review of what i've done since april. Eventually i'll go back and do how to's and part numbers for individual parts of the build.

i actually wanted to move them closer to the base of the manifold and get it right at the head. But the way the runners are cast, some of the other stuff gets in the way. Ive read different theories about this and spent some time talking to Texas_ace, greg at aquamist, the other engineers at work and the aircraft mechanics over there at the hangar who do this with their ww2 era airplanes(btw check out the lone star flight museum for some cool examples of ww1 to modern aircraft and the texan crews that few them.)

It seems that nozzle placement is largely gonna be dependant on your goals. to cool the intake charge 1 nozzle after the IC and before the TB makes a lot of sense.(and saves a bunch of money) but equal distribution is a bit harder to achieve with that approach. Alternatively going direct port solves the unequal distribution problem but at much greater cost and with only marginal gains and a good chance that the water wont have enough time to absorb sufficient kiloJoules of heat to convert into steam before the combustion chamber. But because the intake track is very short with the TMIC and this is primarly a knock suppression system i went direct injection with small nozzels so that in a tuning situation i dont have to worry about insufficent supression in 1 cylinder and oversaturation in another.

as far as flow rate i was at first thinking progressive controll but read some intresting stuff about pump stall at lower current with progressive controllers on shurflo pumps(which i have) so i'm connecting the selenoid and pump to a simple switch and going single stage. I'll post the link if i can find it

No chance to get down to houston today but i did get an hour to work on some of the parts i got from bsamps4 a few months back. Gonna use the relays and box from the IC pump to run the pump, water injection, and the foglights. I have plenty of left over relays and wire from other toyota harnesses so it should look like a factory solution.

I got a bench supply on the pump but without a diagram of the factory subharness i cant seem to figure out why toyota used a 5 pin connector. prolly powering other devices that come on with the pump. if anyone knows or has the diagram let me know

quick question.

anyone have the size on the belts for the 3rd gen 3sgte or do the accessory belts from the 5s or 2nd gen 3sgte run the same size as the 3rd gen? I'm about 10 miles from the auto parts place and dont wanna make multiple trips to get the size right.

and brought it out this afternoon and got it all welded up, holes drilled and threw some paint on it.

ground the cutout to the chassis or are you talking about water injection?

Ground the cutout at the chassis. Otherwise it uses the exhaust as a path to the engine ground wires, turning any aluminum on the way into white powder. In my case the aluminum exhaust gaskets I bought were slowly disintegrating.

And the meth injection looks good. I wasn't knocking your design, just curious because I wondered about even distribution to each cyl too. It's just a trade off between equal delivery and heat absorption, really no one ideal setup.

Looking forward to more updates!

Thanks again to dustin, used the files you sent me to get the wiring sorted. I had just enough spare toyota relays and pins to make up this relay box.

I used the fuses for the systems that the relay box holds

I am using a spdt relays to run my meth injection and spraybar

the first spst relay to run the IC pump continously and the second will be used for the Fogs

and they are the same relays from main fuse box so if one goes out on the road i can quickly swap one from one of these non critical systems to get me home
