Well guys.. the celi is gone and I need another car. Currently Im driving a 95 C280 but its getting way up there in miles (250,000). So.. I'm looking for a new car with similar attributes to my old celica project. It has to be a turbo car, preferably AWD but I wouldn't mind a FWD car either. The car Ive been pondering about was a Eclipse GSX as it has very similar stats to the GT4. I can't afford any thing too recent like a EVO 10 or something, something in the mid to late 90s or possibly early 2000s will do. Any ideas?

If your going for something turbo, I'd go AWD honestly.

Either a little older STI or Evo. Or you could also look at something a little more low profile like an A4.

What's your budget?

Doesn't even have to be an STi. You can get a WRX fairly cheap if you look around. Quick, turbo, AWD. Can't go wrong with that combo.

late 1990's-2000 something evo or wrx are quite affordable. You can scoot one up for around 12 grand but thats where the problem lies.

All of those cars were driven by people who drove the piss out of them. In all likelihood you would be buying a 12000 car that is on its last legs. However if you can find one driven by a 30 year old head of the household then you are in luck cause it was used more like a daily driver with a baby seat and driven normally (like my neighbor does in his 2006 wrx)

Yea I agree with that. I really would prefer AWD.. FWD would be the last option. I'm thinking my max budget will be 15 grand. I'm looking to buy around august. Whats the stats on the A4? I was thinking about an evo 8 also or even the STI but im not sure of the prices for it.

Yea you're right its basically perfect. But the thing is, I hate the boxy shape of both the evo and WRX. The celica looked really good to me with the more round style. I even think the eclipse is better looking than bpth the EVO and STI. I just can't find the GSX model anywhere.

I'll check the stats on it. Thanks for the suggestion smile.gif

2006? Wouldn't that year be well over 15 grand? I agree with what your saying. My friend wanted to sell me his evo couple years back and after the first test drive the car bogged down lol.. The majority of people that own them beat the crap out of it.

anything awd costs more than anything rwd and fwd. Unfortunately.

When buying that kind of car I would obviously look at engine and then make sure that things like limited slip differential and drive shaft are in good shape. I test drove one 2008 evo and it jumped on every gear shift. There was a loud thump noise too. Car had a broken diff and it wasnt pretty. Dealer tried to con me into thinking that "that is how it should be".

Also trannies are always knotchy on these things so shifting will not be easy.

Lol, I had a sneaking suspicion you would like this suggestion.

No but seriously, although the Generation 1 Audi TT has some faults that you should look into, it is otherwise a great car that can come under 15K (I believe I saw a couple for about 12K, through some quick craigslist-ing).

If it's been maintained properly it should be ok. Service/ maintenance is no more expensive than any car.

Things to look out for:

Dashpod problems: Crazy readings for fuel, temp etc. Expensive to replace.
Clunking suspension probably means new anti roll bars.
Clutch is expensive to change, make sure it's good.
Cambelt / water pump should be changed every 50,000 miles or 5 years to be safe.

Other than that, it's all good smile.gif

They were pretty sweet (my dad used to own one) and they are really quick. Problem is that the one I see was just poorly made... mechanically fine but just like, cheap. I don't know how 10-15 years have affected them, but when they came out they were really sweet.

Well since you are looking into a 2g I would recommend you stay away from that if it is gonna be a daily driver. For one they have 7 bolt engine. 7 bolts were far more prone to crank walk compared to the 6 bolts in 1g/gvr4, so most 2g owners tend to swap in the 6 bolt. They are much better as weekend cars since they can make stupid power for a decent price. If you insist on daily driving it though, make sure to stay on top of maintenance. The timing belts are key since they are interference engines. Many also delete the balance shafts as they can cause trouble later down the road. A nice reliable set-up would be mhi evo 3 16g, 272 cams, fmic, 560cc or high injectors, 255 walbro fuel pump, 2.5in piping with a good fmic, and 3in turbo back. That would net about 320-340whp on pump gas. When that gets boring you can look into get a pte 50 trim.

I don't think you'll have luck finding them for under 12k but under or exactly at 14k you might be lucky with any of these cars.

You can't really find a quick car stock without giving up and arm or leg. You could look into Evo VII, STi, or Srt4 since they are all very potent. They all take well to simple bolt-ons, are quick, look good, and fairly reliable.

the audi TT isnt quick? ive found like 7 of them now going under 12K.. some being 9K with like 100,000 miles. I got a little scenerio here though.. I could get one of those audi's with a few weeks to a month right now.. or I could keep saving and summer time maybe check out an Evo, STi, or Srt4. My thing is though I really don't want those common race boy cars.. It just seems like those owners are getting younger and younger.. thanks to rich parents. What I love about the audi TT is that it has a more grown feel than the Evo or STi, and I don't see many race boys in them.. mostly grown folks who dont remove cats and are terrorizing the block with ridiculously loud exhaust. Thats why I have the Audi leading in the race.. and I love the interior! If I do save up.. I may just to get an even later model model Audi TT.. like 2005-2006 maybe

The Audi TT are fairly quick. From what I've heard though, you need a lotta cash to make them any faster (minus the chip mod), and they have weak trannies. Also, I think they are on the heavier side. On the plus side, they looks and feels much more luxurious. Maybe look into the Audi S4? Also make sure things have been replaced if they are around the 100,000 mile mark.

The TT tranny is good for 350+BHP

Stage 1 remap - no other mods - 260 BHP, 270 ft.lbs. - 0-60 in 5.9 ish = ~$300
Stage 2 remap - turbo back exhaust and CAI - 280 BHP, 295 ft.lbs. - 0-60 in 5.5 ish = ~$900

Pretty good gains for little money imo....

Heard the TT's are horrible track car's though.
Not that he needs it for track purposes just saying.
Way to stiff, and way to much understeer over nothing.

Go 350.

quick change of anti roll bars fixes the understeer tongue.gif

or you can get a different Haldex controller, which puts 60% of the power to the back wheels permanently smile.gif

niceee. Could you turn off tcs on those by the way?

I'm still debating on what I want as well. Seems like the TT and Z are neck and neck for me right now. But aiming more towards the Z hmmm don't know, either way both are good cars.

i love driving my gf's TT biggrin.gif its a blast..

could look into a 05-06 mini cooper s. supercharged and if you can find a JCW for fairly cheap (GL) it is 215HP and a quick little car.

stay away from 02-04 MCS's they are problematic (ask me about it! lol) 07+ are turbo'd and a lil heavier but look much better and easier to mod due to it being turbocharged instead of s/c'd

02-06 MCS 163HP
07+ MCS 171HP (nd much better hp/tq curves)

Yep, tcs (ESP) goes off.

Z's are great too. i'd probably get one if i didn't have the TT. Different sort of power. Z is Quicker stock vs stock and more fun to be had with RWD. TT is much better quality inside and out.

Its always snowing where I live so AWD is pretty much a must.. and the audi interior is is the most luxurious of any other car ive had on radar so thats why its been narrowed down to an AUDI TT.. I don't think ill be doing much engine mods anyway itll be my daily driver unless I get another car also.

I know previously I said my new car must be turbo.. but I dunno im really liking the 2003 bmw M3.. I just love the way it looks!! the best price I've seen is like 18 grand.. I'm really thinking about instead of spending like 10-12 grand on the TT in August.. I could just wait until like Spring and just buy the M3. Im gonna be stationed in pensacola florida from september to like march.. so like I won't really be driving that much until I come back anyway.. I'm thinking it could be much less maintence than the audi TT also just for the fact that it is N/A and RWD

SUBARU Legacy. turbocharged.

If you can find one for a good price I'd go with this.

Nice, quick grocery getter with great looks.

Yea it is.. I'm in need search of a new car.. I have 2 options at the moment.. I could get an Audi in a few months.. or get a M3 next year.. if I get the Audi it will be in a garage from september till like january. I really don't wanna rush and get something because the car I pick I will have for the next 5 years at least.. which is why I want suggestions from my 6gc brethren.

with my experience and what you are looking for, i have an audi a4 1.8t (B6) and it is an amazing car, inside and out. Its quick, luxurious, brakes good, the one downfall i guess would be that it is a saloon and therefore handles like one around corners I really like audis a lot...my experience with eclipse gsx's...another story. My friend has one and there are a lot around the town i live in. I have driven it and have this to say, WAY TOO BIG for a 4 cylinder car, POOR visibility, things a tank, and last but not least, it IS NOT and i repeat IS NOT reliable, my friend's gsx has probably been down more than it has been running since he got it, an ongoing waste of his money and time...so bad he had to get a commuter car and STILL pours all his money into the non running GSX. If you like the GSX, honestly i would just pick up a 4th or 5th gen Alltrac instead. I have never driven a 5th gen but I know my 4th gen is just as quick, handles better, better visibility, its a Toyota so its reliability isnt in question, and last but not least i bought my 4th gen alltrac for only 2 grand.

Thats a really good review my friend. Alot of people are giving the GSX terrible reviews. I've only driven the GS.. and I thought my celica GT was faster. Many of my friends are saying the Audi TT has alot of maintenance issues.. others have recommend the audi A4 as you.. I'm not a big fan of the body style though. I love the way the E46 M3 looks, and its fast without needing a turbo.. so maintenance won't be as bad.. What I want to do very soon is test drive the TT and M3.. and see what I like best. Right now it's between the 2 cars unless I find something else. I rulled out the alltrac a while back because I hate the body style lol.. if it looked like a 6 gen I would have bought that longgg ago lol.
