Finally found something worth restoring, not decided if ill go custom or ill restore to its original beauty.

Body is straigt, some rust spots. It runs but it needs a battery, carburator and revise the brakes.. the undercarriage is ok, not rusted.

The car is original from alabama, so is southern vehicle. The interior is trashed. I had not seen it from the inside, but i drove 300 miles with a uhaul trailer, so i was not going back empty handed.

We negotiated, i think i paid a little too much, but the price is under 800, that was his asking price..

Surprised it runs, and no major body issues... except the hood. So right now i just need to start to clean and make it drivable again

Its a classic, and i finally found it. Now i have a 77 celica, and a 97 celica... lol 20 years later.

Enjoy the pics, and take note.. Is a diamond in the rough....

wow, nice project.

I can't wait to buy a house, then I'll be following your footsteps.

wish you the best with it, interior is rought but everything seems to be there so no hunting for door handles and such, just need some upholsery work.

I would love a fastback but a coupe is just as great, there is a guy local to me selling one for 3500, but the thing is perfect.

again, best luck and enjoy it.

the coupes are more iconic because they have a unique sryling as opose to fastbacks which resamble the muscle cars of that era.

crack or broken pieces are piece of cake, problem is when you are missing the piece all together.

That...is...AWESOME.

Good luck on the rebuild. And you don't need a good-looking interior...or body...or anything else once you drop a 2JZ in that sucker!

ah, the RA24, looks like mine except my body isn't as good looking as that. frown.gif

I wouldn't worry too much about the interior anyways. most of them are like that and due for replacement anyways. smile.gif

good luck with the project.

Looks like a great project! Interior is a little rough, but it's just a perfect opportunity to do literally anything you want with it. Blacktop BEAMS seems like the way to go.

I'm going towards modern interior. No sense in scraping tons of money for old parts that are broken. Its a shame, but unless I get lucky a center console went for 200 in ebay and it was cracked. I will try to keep it as stock as possible. I have even tought of a 6gc dashboard.

However, if I can't get it, ill fiberglass it.

The engine, ok for now. Looking into swap.

It will be transformed with toyota parts only.

I should add, it needs a PS airbag, but it has the cover. Dash harness is cut in a few places. Free for the taking. I have the entire dash with the exception of the radio and shift bezel.

there is a yard near by that has a lot of cars, I got a few old school emblems from them before, next time I go I'll check if they still have some of the 1st gen celicas, usually chassis / metal parts are useless as they are expose to the elements, but interior / plastic parts most of the time are in good shape, if I see anything that can be usefull, I'll snap pictures and share them in case you are interested.

prices are really cheap, I have never paid more than 30 bucks for parts from there.

if u want a cheap wheel upgrade the 82-86 celica supra and 82-85 celica gts have a 14x7 wheel stock that looks good on the older celicas

for cheap added power u can go with a 22r bottom end (81-84 22r) and your 20r head will gain you some power.

theres a site called engine builder that makes performace parts for the r series. or look up epn 22r on google

also lcengineering but they are expensive but has everything under the sun

beams swap, pffft you can shoehorn a jz series engine or a 7m in there if you would like, also a 1uzfe fits as well

22rte would work too but wouldnt have as much poteintal but would still yeild around 265hp with some money thrown at it

a v6 radiator out of a 2nd gen 4runner or truck (89-95 v6) is a cheap upgrade from what i read.

i could rattle on but i gotta head to work, nice find. i want a 1st gen coupe so bad.

as far as interior, my buddy used some kind of board and that black automotive carpet u get at walmart in his 77 liftback and it turned out nice. Look up ANDY on celicatech.com and look in the projects fourm to see his build

all is going to be done by me as much as i can, im contemplating a blacktop beams

Time to start the Project updates.

This is what i start with, Normal rust in tipical areas.

Yeah, i was wrong

Drivers seat, What!! its in the trash, i just kept the rails :

Took out the carpet and wanted to inspect the floorboards, and they are lovely :2thumbs: , almost no rust. Just need to take all the crud out.

Prefitted a rear smiley, its crooked, i think there was slight damage in the panel. so I will have to redrill anyways to lift it a couple of mm's :ohyeah:

now the ugly parts so far

the usual battery tray and the location all rusted through.

a busted hood hinge, but i have sourced a good pair

I have started to take the front apart, to check for rust. There is some of it all over but i dont think its bad.. :nonono:

hey 'berto, slightly off topic, but i been reading up on welders, and came accross this welding forum..some of the guys are brutal on noobs, but the tips and tricks you can get just lurking are awesome. been just reading thru the project forum the past couple days, and got some amazing ideas.
www.weldingweb.com
also, learned TONS of great stuff from this site as well:
www.weldingtipsandtricks.com
great videos of actual welding techniques that work. improved my welding 100% in a matter of a couple days just watching his vids, reading the info, and practicing.

looking forward to more progress!

I used to ride to elementry school everyday in one of those!!! [Explains my love for Celicas] Ours was a white '77 HB tho. The interiors were just like that man - ours was trashed by the early 80's - and my Mom is almost as anal about her cars as I am.
Just FYI from someone who has owned a '81 GT - the 22r sux much anus. I hate that motor more than I hate USDM 6GC engines laugh.gif
Get something with more power IMO.
Cool project and best of luck on it.

If you need any specific parts there is one of these in a local junkyard by me(in NC) that isn't too bad off. Just let me know if you want me to hunt for anything.... Good luck on her, I bet she'll be beautiful.

I'd go with the wooden one. Nothing screams more old school than a wooden steering wheel and a clean set of Watanabes.

im doing full resto, it could have been sanblasted, but the surface was so badly pitted. Im having nightmares, because i have two ways of approaching this.

the hardest way will be to get this... which i have...

means getting the car to this....

then after that flip it and undercoat it

i want this car perfect, and only I can do it and know whats done to it.

To restore a car and be period correct means either 2tg or. 18rg. A supra engine does not belong there. I'm a purist when it comes to the engine in this car in particular.

Not bashing the supra engine. Just want do do a good resto and not a hack job. The car does not deserve it....

He never said anything about the Supra engine, he said to use the 1UZ. tongue.gif I get the whole originality thing, and I wouldn't mind having one original. You're doing a good job and doing right by the car. If I ever find the liftback version I'll resto-mod it and we can do a meet. tongue.gif

I'm not saying anything bad about sticking with the stock motor.
I fully understand your going for a full factory resto
Just had to throw out the v8 lol. I'd love to build one with a 1uz v8 an a supra 6speed that would be an awesome old school muscle car

yeah i know, believe me, i threw in lots of ideas, with it, v8, beams and 2rz. Reality the supra thingy was never an option... laugh.gif too overrated, the 18rg was a gift from heaven, right time and right place. Unfortunately not cheap. engine alone was 1500, does not include the flywheel and exhaust i need thats another 1000. and i dont even know if it works, which sucks.

And a full factory resto will include the 20r, but i want it JDM spec, as always biggrin.gif, the 20r, actually i had 2 good running engines, they were melted to make frying pots, lol...

Worst case scenario, 18 rg fails, will do the 2rz, just enough horsepower to move the shell. more than 175 hp, will have to add more components, and fuel lines, and brakes, and upgrade suspension, and the list goes on crazy and dont want to go there...

want it to move, and see the faces of 18y/o honda kids when they see dual carburated engine, and ask where is the fuel injector.....

well, ive been thinking these 2 days, i may just put a 2tg in there and put the 18rg in another car i have, and still be period correct. reason being i may rid of the corolla i bought, and 2 more cars....
