FIRST OF ALL DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. DO NOT HOLD ME RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, "FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY, NOT HIGHWAY"
After that nice disclaimer.... Ok im tired of looking at 500 dollar calipers. Yes it would be nice, but what about the people that dont have money. anything other that our poor piss single piston caliper would be nice.. but there are double piston calipers from some ss3 celicas, yeah!! even more rare that hens teeth. (well maybe not) ![]() regardless of that issue, i will not spend 1899 on a big brake kit on a car that is not going to the track, i rather eat that money in bigmacs. So imagine a bigger car, bigger engine. Those brakes stop that car, it must stop the celica. Hmmm larger car. So it must be an upgrade. Yes by 25% or 50% its still upgrading even if it gets 10%. so i ordered from fleabay, after weeks of pictures and pictures. got it today and see both brake pads together ![]() now that i got your attention, lets see more pics ![]() ![]() almost same size, a little larger and wait it gets better.. ![]() yes that's a celica bracket from a 97 gt, but there is a problem, the cliper mounts are 3/4 of an inch inside the caliper... aprrox.. ![]() so i compared the brackets... side by side ![]() they are almost identical except the point where the caliper bolts... no its not easy to bolt the bracket into the celica because of the mounting points.. ![]() however its funny how the caliper mount points are identical, ![]() so most calipers points could be identical... meaning its junkyard time... there are two options, get another celica bracket and cut those extended studs and figure if it works.. ![]() or find a bracket from another toyota that bolts to our hub and has the same caliper mounts but in a different position. OR! something you can come up with to help this...... And please no "Just get st205 calipers" replies, This caliper was 25 bucks on ebay. Big difference. I will let you all know where this one comes from but for now, i just want you guys to get itchy. I bet culpable knows!!! LOL no, this is not world domination, i need your help, this might turn out great, or it may not work..... Once we figure out the bracket, it may just work with the celica rotors... when you go to the junkyard, look for 1996+ 4 runner calipers
they are pretty affordable remanufactured, so from a junkyard they should be pretty cheap LOOK ! on a 4runner they accomodate 319 mm disc these are 4 piston and mounting points to knuckle should be the same as our celicas. -------------------- ![]() |

Out of curiosity... what is your interest in bigger brakes... what are the current symptoms that you curing with a 2 pot caliper?
Those look like Calipers from a ST165, no? Probably not as they allegedly bolt up without issue. -------------------- -Mike

Well my attempts to use the lexus caliper were a failure. The caliper bracket cannot be machined safely, and after junkyard dives, did not find a suitable caliper. Just when i was ready to give up, Johnny gave me an idea, that i put to practice.
Well these are quite rare calipers in its oem form, because thy are sought by people like Random Stranger. Yes ... Found them on ebay, but cardone manufactures them here.. So after 126 usd, yes, that was 106 of shipping from Hong Kong... i came up with thiss!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the thing that amazes me is the fact that most Toyota calipers have the same distance between bolts, with a little difference in offset. The calipers brackets change from model to model. now i have not tweaked to see the contact nor have i tested them on the street. Now here is the good part. I did not remove my brackets or my pads. Simply installed the caliper and i looks like it belongs there. Have to make more measures So ST owners that can upgrade to GT brakes, can use the gt calipers and this caliper... Well im not done yet, i will buy new rotors and pads.. Its a Hybrid combo, bolt on, may have to tweak some spots but picture dont lie.... Guess what car they are from, well you are right. This are MR2 Turbo with a turbocharged 2.0L 94 + They are sought by most mr2 as a popular upgrade.... Well Enjoy. Ill post pics when i paint them and clean them... So If the pads are the same size as the ST185 GT-Four Twin Piston, 94+ MR2 Turbo and Celica then I'll want to buy a set of these twin piston calipers. I looked online and aftermarket performance brake pads are super expensive from japan. I'm talking about $250+ shipping minimum. you have to buy pads for a celica gt. Remember the caliper bracket and disc are from the celica. I do not recommend any other pad, with that being said feel free to venture.
my discs are old, and already have a groove where the celica pads have been going. So putting the mr2 pads will only damage them right now, because there is a 2mm diff, with new discs, it might be different. well the other side of the story are lexus es330 pads, i will post all pads for comparison. lexus vs celica ![]() celica vs mr2 ![]() go to the junkyard and collect pads, see which fit and which dont. looks as if the mr2 ones will give you more contact area. I wonder how the st165 2 pot calipers will work if you take the caliper bracket off. I know its a direct fit on the at200 because I have it on there now off my old st165. we'll see this summer.

there are a lot of options from twin caliper setup all the way to 8 piston calipers, but I think the point of this was for a budget and user friendly upgrade, I don't think there is any other caliper upgrade easier than this, and as affordable as this.
great job Norberto ! -------------------- ![]() |

so essentially 25.4mm pistons, both pistons? Thats doesnt seem right. Whats the OD of the piston? To get an accurate reading of the piston side you have the push the piston out of the caliper and measure it that way.
For example to st165 caliper piston diameter is 37mm. leading and trailing piston. now with my set-up ls430 calipers all the way around with 315mm rotors front and back my brake bias will be 64% -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

so by the looks of the pic the celica gt and mr2 twin turbo brake pads are different. Where did you buy the mr2 pads from are they oem or aftermarket? This post has been edited by BonzaiCelica: Dec 12, 2014 - 8:02 PM -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

If you could that would be nice ^...
You dont have to completely push it out just remove the boot and push it out a little because the OD is different on the cylinder itself. Do both front and rears for me so I can calculate the sock brake bias. Then we can go from there on upgraded brake parts for cheap. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

I've found the specs of the calipers for the ST202's
The single piston caliper specs (SS-II): Piston Diameter: 57mm Piston Count: 1 Total Piston Area: 2551.76mm2 (25.5176cm2) The twin piston caliper specs (SS-III): Piston Diameter: 40.4mm Piston Count: 2 Total Piston Area: 2563.79mm2 (25.6379cm2) Basically they cover the same area, but you should get even distribution of pressure on the pads with the 2 pots. and then compared to the MR2 calipers Piston Diameter: 36mm Piston Count: 2 Total Piston Area: 2035.75mm2 (20.3575cm2) -------------------- |

The specs that Rusty posted, the single piston caliper is different from the USDM caliper, isn't it? I would still think that the MR2 caliper would be an upgrade from the single-piston stock caliper.

Those specs are correct and no the twin pot calipers of a turbo mr2 is not an upgrade. Stock Celica gt bias is 71% front given it is fwd. With the mr2 calipers as an "upgrade" bias ends up being 65% to the front. You will gain loOks but lose performance.

can't you change the bias by getting the splitter or whatever you call it, off an mr2? I mean you need it for the ST to GT upgrade, so would GT to MR2 work?

And honestly i dont think (if you have the same tires and suspension front and rear) having 60% to the front is a bad thing, i mean it helps take away 1 of the many things the front wheels are intended to do on fwd cars. |

Damn so the brake bias gets shifted to the back that's no dice at the track. Although it will take less effort to lock the front up. not nessesaraly, the " theorical " magic number for brake bias is 60 / 40 ( front / rear ) but that will vary from setup to setup, and the importance of modifying your Bias is to use the most grip available while keeping the front locking first than the rear, so if you think about it, as long as his front is still locking the tires before the rear, it is an upgrade, a good one actually, because it will spread the braking force better among all 4 tires, so all 4 tires will work more efficiently at stoping the car instead of the front ones doing most of the job with a 70+ % of the braking force on the front. One of my friends tracks his car every season and his brake bias is 58% front 42% rear with an adjustable proportioning valve, he got to those numbers after a lot of trial an error testing. so Norberto, find a safe area where you can test your brakes, have someone look at your tires ( or video ) and make sure your front tires lock before your rear one, if they do, I'll be the first one to call this a great upgrade, best bang for your buck brake upgrade. -------------------- ![]() |

of course, a car should be setup to the driver's taste, but my point is that, This " upgrade " should be called an upgrade. in a perfect world you would want all 4 tires locking at the same time as this would make all the tires work just as hard stopping the car, but in the real world the front needs to be locked just slightly before the rears, so depending on the weight transfer due to suspension and engine position and of course drivers taste we should modify the bias to make the best out of the setup,. if you look at most adjustable proportioning valve setups they are use to lower the bais on the front not to increase it, as manufacturers go for a very safe number making sure the front will locked up before the rear even when we are using crappy tires on the front. so for race / track where tires will be properly maintained they aim to bring the bias closer between front and rear while still keeping the front locking first.
let me hear what you think, as this is not what " I know ", is just what I've understood from some reading I've done and I can be very well misinformed or have misunderstood the data, so some of you should support / contradict what I'm saying so we can all move in the right direction. -------------------- ![]() |

I totally agree with you Stevenson I guess the brake bias with the Mr2 calipers would make it an ideal upgrade but just look at the surface area of the pistons. How much smaller is the Mr2 pad compared. To the stock celicas?

I have to take some time and calculate the ST205 stock Bias, and then install the rear ST205s on my car, depending on how it performs I may need an adjustable proportioning valve, but time will tell.
for now I can say, that this is a great setup for someone who doesn't want to get too complicated and on a budget, it changes your brake bias to improve braking without having to actually play with proportioning valves an such, at a very low cost. Great Job Norberto ! -------------------- ![]() |

Someone forgot to mention SS-II non superstrut has the same 2pot as SS-III 2pot, Right Rusty?
Only SS-I has the same 1pot as USDM GT. Mr2 is a way lighter car than Celica so doesn't need as strong brakes. -------------------- Mike W

Superstrut SS-II and SS-III have Twin Pot front brakes. (And I think the SS-II superstrut brakes were bigger than the SS-III, larger rotor)
SS-II has the Single pot front brakes But as I pointed out.... The single piston caliper specs (SS-II): Piston Diameter: 57mm Piston Count: 1 Total Piston Area: 2551.76mm2 (25.5176cm2) The twin piston caliper specs (SS-III): Piston Diameter: 40.4mm Piston Count: 2 Total Piston Area: 2563.79mm2 (25.6379cm2) It's only an increase of 12.03mm2 (3.47mm x 3.47mm) -------------------- |

I thought when we compared brakes (when I had SS-III) that you said yours looked identical?

My ST202 cut is from a non-superstrut SS-II Yet it has twin piston calipers: Here I've used a torch to show the non-superstrut suspension: And a couple more pics showing the markings: I'm not a Celica expert, but I'm pretty sure what I have here is a non-superstrut SS-II with twin piston calipers. Thoughts? -------------------- |

Yes you do
![]() From Discussion thread about LSD's in the ST202 SS-2's & SS-3's QUOTE (Rusty) then after 97 the SS-2(beams) & SS-3(non & beams) run the same TRD pads, so they should run the same twin pot front brakes (check Japanese TRD website)...and on Toyodiy (however slight difference in part numbers) They (ST202 SS-II [BEAMS] & SS-III [BEAMS]) both run "twin pot brakes"... However the part numbers are different, it could mean nothing, or a difference between the two, which is why I didn't add it ....and I sort of forgot ![]() (example : 1998's SS-II & SS-III) Would be good if you have time to take measurements so we can compare. ![]() -------------------- |

this Sticky thread is useless without pictures!!! norberto jump on it.
Which brings me to another topic, hey S8S8 can you give us that answer. We are curious to know whether SS-II Beams and SS-III Superstrut Twin Piston Brake Calipers are the same size??? -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

Out of curiosity... what is your interest in bigger brakes... what are the current symptoms that you curing with a 2 pot caliper? Those look like Calipers from a ST165, no? Probably not as they allegedly bolt up without issue. if this is true someone over on alltrac.net did a write up on how to use tacoma brakes on a st 165/185 i have a set of front gt st204 calipers and i think a set of st185 calipers... perhaps ill measure them when i get a chance.... i also have access to st205 front calipers. maybe ill see what i come up with. is fensport correct??
if you see this link you see that they mention the ST202 Superstrut Celica, AE111 Corolla Superstrut, MR2 Rev 3 N/A and MR2 Rev 3sgte all use the same brake pads http://www.fensport.co.uk/Parts/Model_14/Category_11/2672 but if you take a looky here on toydiy you can see that the pads from 1999 Celica SS-III Superstrut only share common part numbers with carinna and corona cars. http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/xref?v=J_1999...mp;s=0446520230 Here is the ST202 Mcpherson SS-II twin pot pads. http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/xref?v=J_1998...mp;s=0446520470 here is 1990-1995 SW20 3sgte MR2 http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/s?v=U_1993_TO...1%E2%80%9117160 brake pad : 04491‑17160 for some reason I can't find any part numbers for the Corolla AE111 brake pads. toydiy does not list part #'s ST202 SS-II Beams Mcpherson brake pads : Part 04465‑20470 ST202 SS-III Beams Superstrut brake pads : Part 04465‑20230 or so I think damn I'm so confused.
