new question, cranking but won't start, and a plug and something e, HELPPPPPPPP Options

okay, as some of you may know i swapped my 94 engine into my 97 st with only minimal changes as switching over all
the accessories and intake.
and now that i'm wiring it all back together and running all the hoses and vaccume lines, i noticed some of the places where
hoses should be ran there are some caps on the intake?

i don't know if i should take them off and run hoses or leave them on? one is on the top of the intake, and the other is on the bottom....

if it helps the 97 was a standard, and the 94 was an auto....

also, does anyone have some close of pictures of where all the hoses/vac lines go? i know i was told to just look at the diagram on the firewall,
but that can be confusing at times , and it doesn't have all of the hoses...


also there is one other thing i'm curious of, over by the power steering pump on the bottom passenger side, there is a long hose/tube that comes from the driver side and has an open hole/connecter on the end, kind of looks like the same thing as the shifting cable ends..... but i don't know where it goes either...

i can try and get pictures up later, but i still cant find my camera... so some pictures of how its all supposed to be ran would be very much appreciated.. thanks guys

but i'll answer one of your questions, the auto to manual doesn't make a difference because it's the engine and not the tranny

i was thinking the only difference might of been one had something to do with cruise control maybe?

I wouldn't think so cause with the 5s, i took the cruise off a 97 celica, both auto, but the manual 94 i have, the cruise looks the same.
That's the 5s though, the 7a could be setup different but the cruise control shouldn't affect the vac lines

hmmm ... not sure but i would like to get this figured out today,
i got everything put back together and oiled up, only thing left to do is finish the vacume lines/hoses and
put in antifreeze and fire it up!

start with the items on the picture that aren't the manifold and see what's missing...that sticker shows the lines and has the external engine parts shown in the location they are in the engine bay...if u start tracing the ones u already have hooked up ull figure it out in no time.

the diagram makes it pretty simple, dude, just trace each line.

the ones that are essesial for the motor to run right are the air control vavle, map sensor, pressure regulator, throttle opener, and idle up valve (if you have AC.)

you can block off the others if you have a 94-96, and bridge the wires going to the egr temp sensor. 97+ may throw a code if you bridge it, im not sure.

the one thats labeled "pipe" in the upper right of the diagram? if so, yes, that is the air bypass pipe that attaches to the back of the intake manifold.

GOOD NEWS. i have all the vaccume lines ran right, and my engine is now turning over but not firing. ..

the only things i don't have hooked up are these and i need your help in knowing what they are....

any ideas?

this wire is over by the battery, (2 pictures of it.)





and this thing is all the way over and down by the power steering pump? where does it go?



also, any suggestions as to why its turning over but not starting?

no, it doesn't plug into the dizzy, there is one already plugged into the dizzy.

there should be 2 plugs on your distributor.
one for the distributor itself, the other for the coil thats inside the distributor.
thats why you dont have spark.

really? i looked on the dizzy after he said that , and i didn't see another place for anything to be plugged in..... where is it located on the dizzy compared to the first one.

ok.
reading the whole thread again, you used a 94 engine, in your 97.

i assume from some of your previous threads, IIRC, that you used the 97 harness and ecu, and swapped over the accessories from the 97 motor to the 94?
did you swap the oil pump housing, and pully as well? (it has the intergrated crank sensor mount built into the oil pump housing, and the pully has the trigger wheel intergrated into it.)
did you use the 97 distributor? (you should be if not)

pretty much anything that bolts to the engine (with the exception of the PS pump, and water pump) that has a sensor attached to it needs to be from the 97 motor, that way the ecu recieves all the proper signals it needs.

does anyone else know if the 96+7afe's used a cam sensor? i know the 99 gt's did..but not sure about earlier years/models.

okay i can take some pictures when i make it home tonight,
but the harness is still the 97 harness
and i swapped over everything you guys told me to, including the dizzy,

not sure as to where its mounted because i never paid attention to look,
but as i said i will get the pictures up tonight!

and yes, i swapped over the oil pump housing and crank sensor too, i had to do it while the engine was inside the car because i didn't know i had to,
and let me tell you, it was a pain compared to doing it out side of the engine bay, but i got it done and its switched over too.

okay, still haven't been able to take pictures, BUT i have all the ground correctly, and i used a volt tester to check to see if i was getting power to the distributor with the key in the on position, and i am. lights right up .... there is only one other plug besides the one i showed you that i could think would possibly have anything to do with the car not starting.... it is down by the starter and it looks like a ground? it has a brass head that goes under a bolt and you tighten it down .... its just hanging there and i'm guessing it goes onto the block somewhere? if anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

hopefully can get pictures tonight, but i tried that with the screw driver like you told me , and still no spark to the plugs..... but i am getting the light thing to light up at the plug to the dizzy so i don't get it... if its getting power to the dizzy, why isn't it going through to the plugs?

before you continue any further, you need to find out what those plugs are for. especially if they were plugged before and not they are not, they might be essential

okay, still wasn't able to find my camera, but i did manage to find an iflip...

so bear with me... and don't mind my lisp. ha. effing jolly rancher.....

so here goes nothing

vid 1 and vid 2 are just of the mysterious plug i can't find a mate to.





vid 3 is below the intake and above the starter... its the one that looks like its going up and should be going down, it used to go to the rail that went from the intake down to the bottom of the firewall or crossmember i believe, not sure. but its grounded still, none the less.


vid 4 is over by the ac and bottom of the radiator


and lastly vid 5 is just of the distributor. which i've checked and checked, 1 plug.

mysterious plug went to the o2 sensor on the header.... somehow i had the 2 o2 sensors mixed up and had the one prong plug o2 sensor on the manifold instead of on the down pipe.... switched them and it mates up fine..... still no spark though

ok that center wire on the dixy cao goes to your coil. i zoomed on the ignitor. im almost betting its ecu, or the ignitor

Glad that the mystery plug was taken care of. Get me a better pic of the other one (down by the radiator) and I can see if I cant mate that up to anything else. And as far as your ignitior goes, just use that PDF I sent to pull some readings. But I'm with stephen on this, one of the two.

okay well i couldn't find my meter today so i wasn't able to test it.... but i still don't see how the igniter could of went bad if it worked fine 3 months ago, and only sat outside for 2 months in the summer..... then was rolled into our garage.... it seems to me it should still work fine....


talked to spider some more, thought it might be because of alot of moisture in the distributor maybe?

and for the ecu, i don't think it could of gotten f-ed up as to the fact i didn't even undo the harness, just pulled it all neeatly out of the way and plugged everything back in as it should be , no bare wires ever touched anything they shouldn't have or went somewhere they weren't supposed to as the only things i messed with were plugs, never wires by themselves.......


so hoping someone can shine some light on this or maybe tell me a way to do another test to find if its the distributor or not .......... getting very disheartened

so did you swap the 94 head out for the 97 head?
that could be your problem if you didn't.

i doubt thts the issue. the oilpump, dizzy, misc sensors are all really thats needed to run.

exactly.... so i'm thinking i might take apart the dizzy to see if its not damp or filled with moisture, check the coil while i'm at it...

if that doesn't help with anything then next step is igniter, and if that doesn't fix it then
ecu i suppose?

Well i've decided that i'm going to tough it out...

i'm hauling the car over to our mechanics shop who is a pretty good friend of ours,
he said he'll give me a pretty good deal and get it running......

so within the next 3 or 4 days it should be up and running, i'm dropping it off today at 1pm.

Ok, Im no master tech. here but if I was to guess I would say that the OBD I and OBD II is where the differences in the vacuum lines are. I know my 94 GT and 96 GT have alot of minor differences when it comes to the hose routing around and through the intake manifold.
