First gen honda insight with a K20 swap...

200WHP in a 1900lbs car.

Win?

http://www.lhtperformance.net/documents/lht_k-sight.html

Discuss.

Personally I find it interesting, and I love sleeper, so this is awesome in my eyes. Up side is 200whp sleeper, and 45mpg highway, Down side is I hear they will build it for ~20k plus donor car. If i had the money I would buy it/have them build me one.

edit: I feel the overall workmanship seems top notch, its not stripped out, and seems to be easy enough to DD. (as stated by LHT Performance) Honestly it looks OEM.

I dont see how its gonna be 200hp and still be able to get 45 mpg. Also who is going to pay 20,000$+ to drive in a 20 year old farty tin can that as dustin so nimbly put, is fugly.

I like it because it's different than every other Honda out there. I wouldn't pay 20k for it. That shop does top notch work check out the KR-Z it's very cleanly done.

So your saying, if you had the opportunity to make a sleeper Prius you wouldn't?

It is 20k plus the Insight which ranges from 4k to 13k.

I get everyone point that its not the prettiest car. But, as I see this swap/build, its ment to be a sleeper. Sleepers shouldn't be eye catching, or exude the feeling of speed. They should look stock, and should defiantly be underestimated. I don't think anyone would disagree that a Honda Insight would be seriouly under estimated as a quick car.

Why do people like sleepers so much? What is the huge appeal? A fast car with 0 effort put forth on looks? A car you can take to the big bad street races and beat someone in and they can say "That was like the fastest POS I've ever seen?!?!?! ZOMG!" or "I've never seen a car so fast with no spoiler?!?! How did he do that?!?!"

My buddy has a K20 CRX. It's whatever... Like you said, he is about $15-20k deep into a 225HP NA ugly doorstop looking Honda...Yeah, I guess it's a sleeper, but no one will ever tell him how cool it looks. He won't ever picking any chicks up in it. He won't ever do anything besides go fast in a straight line. He WILL beat other Honda kids however CUZ HIS VTEC CRACKS THE HARDEST YOOOOO!!!

I'll take a sexy, fast, well handling car any day over that. I couldn't care less about "sleeper" front wheel drive cars...

coolest because its being swapped into a toyota? and the ae86 def will not pick up chicks, or be called sexy by anyone outside of an automotive enthusiast. Similarly to the K-Sight.

To each his own, I personally have always enjoyed sleepers.

edit: "and my sleeper beauty 1988 Celica Alltrac." Thank you for being a hypocrite, thats right off your profile. I also assume thats y there was an edit on ur previous post, where u added ..""sleeper" front wheel drive cars...."

There is a difference between a car that comes stock sleeper status and spending 20k on a sleeper project, which was my target of hate.

My reason for edit is that I like cars with subtle mods or clean tasteful mods with high power, that some may call sleeper. But they are in way more favored forms than a hybrid Honda with a 21st century motor. I like stuff like "sleeper" BMW's and Alltracs, etc. Cars that can perform motor sports, not just highway pulls.

We have different expectations I guess from our "sleepers".

The reason the AE is better in my eyes is what the guy is doing with it. Professional drifting, not just professional high school late night street racing, lol.

Edit: Also the AE is a fully built K20/24 hybrid + turbo + fully built, with 500hp in a 2000lbs RWD car completely race ready. Not 200hp, stock in an ugly FF car. THAT is why it is better...lol...open your eyes.

Wow I hate to say you are wrong but you are in a few ways.

1st-there's never been an all trac or bmw that has been a sleeper. Unless there's a stock non alltrac celica concealing all the all trac components it's easy to identify, and I'm not even into Toyotas.
2nd- Who says a sleeper can only perform well doing highway pulls. There are many Honda's that do well at circuit racing.

Hell my stock 2000 Si did awesome at the track. I was getting point by's from cars worth 20 times more than mine!

I do agree with you that the insight is overpriced I couldn't justify paying that much for it even though I can appreciate the nice work lht's done.

Even though I'm a big Honda fan I wouldn't have done a K-swap like in the ae-86. I feel that there are better platforms to start with.

Since when is 200 fwhp "fast" and worth 20 grand?laugh.gif And saying celica STs and civics can get over 35 mpg an extra 10 mpg isnt worth $20,000 more. Even if it is faster than an average car(but still looks, feel, and drives worst), its still slower than most performance built cars.90% of people that saw it would laugh, especially when the person driving acts like the car is fast, its almost worst...Put 20 grand into just about any other car and youll have 300+whp

So a BMW m3 with complete stock body pushing 550 hp to the wheels isn't a sleeper?

no its not, because the M3 badge says it all. Not to mention the more aggressive styling ques that BMW gives there M cars.

Mak, I see your point. And yes, the AE86 is cool, and yes id love to have it. But i dont think its a sleeper.

Can we agree to disagree?

u have to look at the K-sight like this. The car stated with 60ish hp at the crank, to make it into something with 200WHP, ur increasing the HP almost 3x to the wheels.

I think the k-sight is an interesting "science project". And if i had the money, or the know how, id do it, just because i think its cool. I doubt anyone here with a modded car, or money pit, does it because others think its cool. They do it for themselves.

1. Sleeper (N.)

Often reffering to what appears to be a ordinary looking stock commuter car that is anything but stock under the hood. Pretty much the exact opposite of your every day riced up civic.

"My bone stock looking 1967 Volkswagen Beetle with a dual carbed, big bore and race head equiped engine gives quite the ego bashing when a ricer can't hold up to his own challenge at a light."

I see your point. I'm just saying it's sleeper in the sense that people figure the car to be 300 hp, and it winds up to be 550 hp which is a pretty vast difference.

Edit: yeah I dont think the ae's a sleeper either. Just thought I'd share my personal favorite k series swap.

The main sex appeal for sleepers in a car race is because sleepers are the under dog in a race with a trump card up its sleeve.

However i'm not a fan of this insight swap for its sleeper aspect instead I like the engineering involved.

I like the insight for the aluminum chassis along with great aerodynamics. Honda spent millions to get this car with a low coefficient of drag down to .25. Considering our Celicas has a sleek body yet it still has coefficient of drag .35. That is a big difference. Hell the insight has a better coefficient of drag compared to the Nissan GT-r.

What is there not to like when you mash together of the the greatest Naturally aspirated engine in the world with one of the most under rated chassis.

Lets put a 2jz in a golf cart..that would be a total sleeper..As no one would expect it to be fast.. Also the insight doesnt really look slow, it just looks bad. To someone who didn't know cars they wouldn't know the difference. Now putting a ls3 is a 75 ford grenada, THAT is a sleeper haha.

I call BS on 45mpg + 200hp or that 350+whp 43mpg rsx they built. My civic is runnin a K20A3 with stupid fake IVTEC (not real VTEC, its some stupid system that honda developed to make better fuel economy + a bit of power, rather than power like regular VTEC), and I just have minor bolt ons and im only gettin like 33mpg if that. I worked it out like 5 or 6 diff times to see how my fuel econmy is, and im averaging 32mpg. So 45+mpg on a K series, unless they de-tune the living hell of out that motor, they are not gettin anywhere near that.

An Insight is way lighter than your Civic. It also comes down to gearing and many other variables.
