Might be better off removing the assembly?

I am only saying so because the shifter swap guide I quickly pull up here instructs to pull the assembly.

its a bit of work and too fully remove it u need your a/c controls taken out and that's a pain...id try to make it work without removing it, i just did my short shifter without removing it.
