9006 to H1 Conversion Adapter How-To Specifically for Projectors (HID or Non-HID)
My apologies, these are not actual pics just taken off the internet, but enough to get the idea. I'm attempting an end all HID conversion adapter solution due to the many request i keep getting. Request to update the sticky with this version. Tools: -Crimper which has the crimp end, the cutting end, and wire stripper. -Solderer (optional) To Buy: -9006 heavy duty harness or get the female side of it -H1 harness or substitute with H4 Harness (at least with pigtails) -Butt Connectors (optional) -Wire Loom -Heatshrink or electrical tape (depends on you) Just a rough estimate (depends where you get it, could be cheaper, thats just how much i bought it at the time and from the vendors pricing): 9006 Heavy duty Harness: $20.00 H1 Harness: $24.00 Butt Connector: $0.20 Wire Loom: $1.00 for 1 ft Totals: Its going to cost you somewhere (give or take some dollars) ~$45.00 to make an adapter for both sides. Keep in mind that depends where you get the parts. 1. Buy this and cut the female side off the 9006 heavy duty harness, the reason why I chose this is because I knew it already had the female side that i could use, and i had em already when I used to use 9006 high wattage bulbs, but that is the concept. This female piece is used to connect to your existing 9006 stock harness. ![]() 2. Buy this, H1 harness (for illustration, it is colored blue in this example thats the other half that connects to your female 9006 half, and which will complete your adapter piece. its basically what will be connecting to your HID spades or even just your stock projecter H1 bulb if you choose not to go HIDs. This will be spliced together with the female side of step 1. or you can use an H4 harness as a substitute illustrated with 3 terminals. which means you just don't use the third terminal. this is actually what I used cus i couldn't get an H1 type. H1 < The correct one H4 < Not exact but still works, just don't use the third terminal. ![]() 3. Now this is where you connect them together. there are many different methods, use your creativity or preference. -you can twist the wires together and electrical tape (i don't recommend, so ghetto), or twist cap (sucks too) ![]() ![]() another decent method is to crimp them together with a butt connector (this is what I did and its still clean), ![]() and lastly you can also solder them together and then electrical tape and/or heatshrink it. ![]() ![]() 4. Next buy wire loom or wire management, something like this. have the wires fit in, I recommend buying the best fitting wire loom, not the big ones cus these are only 2 wires. Then you have the option to either electrical tape the ends of the loom or professionally use a good thick heatshrink or any for the two ends. ![]() 5. Now your adapter should look like this. Just for clarification, the butt connector method was used in this case, and keep in mind, the illustration is showing just one wire, it should be two as obviously there are positive and negative wires. i just wanted to show the example. I just used electrical tape at the ends to tighten up the wire loom, reason for doing so is many OEM cars have it this way. ![]() 6. Here's sample of mine, you can tidy it up better if you can tuck it somewhere or zip tie it. ![]() 7. Plug it in and rock in roll, please for safety precautions please be mindful of the wires you are connecting don't make them backwards or opposite connections. its easy, its color coded! and the bestest thing about it is that, you looks OEM-ish, looks just like any other wire in your engine bay. and you can easily go back to 9006, no harm, just by removing the adapter, clean and reversible action. its true, i keep talking about how i did it but never really did something about it. well, i've received a good number of request in my pms that my last pm got me to do it, thank MALHAR95 for it. This solution is a lot better than the sticky where you just slide the bare wire into the stock 9006 harness, mines a lot safer and cleaner and makes more sense really - an adapter.

Done and done. Total cost: $9. My projectors came with H1 pigtails so I only had to pick up the heavy duty 9006 harness from EBay. This should definitely be added to the stickies.

thats great, how did yours come with pigtails were the headlights used? oh yea pay attention to how your adapter comes into connection with the harness for the driver side. If i remember correctly the stock 9006 was flipped negative when you plug it in so just doublecheck that part, i may be wrong but I remember I had to flip my HID bulb wires because of this. so just make sure your negative on the adapter matches up to how it plugs into the negative on the stock 9006 harness.

Stupid question. My 9006 harness came with white and black, but my H4 came with white on top and the bottom 2 are blue and black. Do i match the white to the blue and black to black?

since color scheme is off just pick which one becomes the + and - on your H4 and match it to stock harness, third terminal on H4 is not used.

You aren't converting the HID kit to fit the car, you have to convert the car's wiring to fit the HID kit. Yeah i got a Hid kit and the wiring harness' for 9006 and H1. My head lights are at the post office as I wont be able to pick them up until Monday, because they're closed. I'm going to see how it all goes together Monday. I think I got it figured out though.

what i mean is that the stock harness connects directly to the HID Bulb so you cannot do that. the other two wires that are connected to the HID bulb go to the ballast. and not what you are saying that the ballast goes straight to the HID bulb, you would be uninvolving the stock harness at that point. thats why i posted the pic as proof so you can see that the stock harness clearly uses my adapter to go straight into the hid h1 spades theres no in between. its stock harness ===== hid bulb not ballast ===== hid bulb because then where does the stock harness come in, its not to the ballast thats for sure. a big thing too is you have to remember H1 bulbs too only just have spades. the stock harness directly powers the hid bulb, then the two wires from the hid bulb get amplified from the ballast. there are four wires that come from the HID bulb + and - which goes straight to the stock harness (this is where the adapter comes in the middle) the other two are part of the hid kit that go to the ballast to get amplified.
I hope this clarifies it, unless you have some other type of set up that clearly can run another way. I've installed over 20 hid kits different brands different bulbs so thats where my experience comes in. Plus mine is shown to work. but again its purpose really is to NOT CUT YOUR STOCK 9006 harness off, method wise i know my style works. i got a H1 harness but it only have one black wire. is that the wrong one? where can i get the correct one? looked everywhere and thats all i can find. i saw a H3 but it has 3 black wires, i figured it be the same as the as the one i got.

The kit I had before this DDM kit (can't remember the brand but it was much higher quality) was exactly the same way. The usdm Celica came with 9006 harness. If you have the stock lo beam then you dont need any conversion. Only time you'll need a conversion is if you're upgrading it to something else. Like the most popular jdm projectors that uses a h1 instead of 9006.

It had I believe one wire from the car to the ballast(this is the 9006 wire that you'll want) and the other two is just the hot and ground wire from the ballast to the bulb. Silly is correct. HID kits plug the harness from the car to the ballast, NOT the bulb. The bulb only uses power and ground (round plugs) to the ballast, and sometimes come with a wire or two if they're of the hi/low kind.

i am converting my headlights to the jdm projectors. so i should just get the kit then correct? and it should already come with harness the converts the 9006 to the h1 right?

i am converting my headlights to the jdm projectors. so i should just get the kit then correct? and it should already come with harness the converts the 9006 to the h1 right? Here's what I did: Got my H1 Hid bulb inserted in the housing. I used LewFX method to get my HiD's installed.

I'll go into more detail since I'm on the computer. Here's what I mean by 9006 ballast and h1 hid bulb.
9006 Ballast: Reason is because your stock harness is 9006. So you buy the 9006 ballast which will come with a 9006 wire that'll plug from the stock harness to the ballast. Now there's electrical power from your stock harness to the ballast. H1 HiD Bulb: Simply because it's the size that'll fit the projectors. The bulb will fit the projector housing. Now the other end of the bulb will have two wires attached to it. One hot and one ground wire. They'll both connect to the 9006 ballast. Now you have power from the ballast(^ballast got power from the stock harness^) to the H1 HiD bulb. So basically once you have a 9006 ballast. Theoretically you can attach any other type of HiD bulbs to the same ballast. The bulb only uses power and ground (round plugs) to the ballast, and sometimes come with a wire or two if they're of the hi/low kind. Mine do. The bulb harness has 4 wires. 2 go to the car's harness (hence the need for the H1 conversion harness) that lead back to a generic plug on the ballast, then two more wires that lead back to the bulb itself. Both HID kits I've had we're wired up this way. It keeps the ballasts universal so all the manufacturers have to change is the bulb. I know other brands plug directly into the ballast, but I can't say I know which brands are wired which way. It'd be nice to get a list going so we knew which kits to buy and which kits need this H1 conversion harness. Edit: Finally found a picture that shows how my kit is wired up. The car's harness plugs into the bulb, which has the specific bulb plug (I.e., 9006, H1, H3, etc.). This then uh's into the generic ballast, which is universal for any bulb type that DDM sells. Then two more wires, the positive and ground wires, lead out of the ballast and plug back into the bulb via more generic plugs. My Projectors came with the H1 connection and the plug, but no shop in my area has a Female HB4 (9006) socket OR a HB4 Harness kit... On eBay I might as well just buy the complete H1 to HB4 adapter from Hong Kong... It is a lot cheaper than buying the parts off eBay separately... Called every single car/auto dealer around my area... No one has the needed harnesses or plug ![]() I guess my only options are to: 1) Splice into OEM wiring 2) Buy a new plug set and redo a whole new plug setup or 3) Buy the Wiring adapter from Hong Kong and use it I will probably just go with 3), since it is the cheapest and easiest... On a side note for these JDM lights and people fitting them to their Celica's, in my home town of Canberra, Australia, these lights will not pass rego! I was informed that these lights need to have a leveling system in them, they cannot not be fixed in place so that you can blind others drivers. I thought it was a bit slack but those are the rules here in Canberra, so if you are planning to get your vehicle registered in Canberra with these lights, remove them and fit standards and then put them on after. Hopefully this will help you avoid the issues I had with ACT rego

To clarify you WILL need this adapter regardless if you have HID's already or not. I previously had HIDs in the stock housing (yes, shame on me), and just received my projectors. I didn't order this harness based on what I read in this thread. But to confirm, you WILL need this harness. The bulb will have to plug into the car, so an H1 bulb into a 9006 vehicle will not work.
I've also had difficulties finding these plugs locally. Can't seem to find a female 9006 or a female H1 plug, and ofcourse no one is going to stock the adapter harness. Looks like I won't get these installed this week, unless I go to the wrecker with a shopping list of cars that use and H1 headlight, and a 9006 headlight, and hope that they still have the plugs left. EDIT: Well, after scrambling around the city to find the parts I needed to build this adapter harness. I realized I didn't need it, as the thread mentioned. I previously had 9006 HID's. I was able to use a combination of the new HID bulb and pigtail, along with a pigtail from my existing 9006 HID bulb, and make it work. Lesson learned, if you've got HIDs in OEM housing, and upgrade to projectors.
