been thinking about swapping a 3vz into my celica
I know the carry an is300 both came with them but was three anything else options on other swaps will be considered too I mainly want something that makes more power than the 5s but I can still order parts for at autozone only other thing is I don't want to spent 5000 on just the swap alone before install just want extra power but have to stay simi cheap (for the price of the swap itself) an be able to dd this for a year or so lol thanks for your help -------------------- 95 gt coupe, v6 swap weekend toy

The 1MZ seems like a good option as well, slightly newer as well. Both are good options though.

ECU dont give a dam wether or not the auto is attached. and the ecus are plug and play between auto/manual anyway.
with any v6 you will probly need an e-series tranny so expect that extra expense. -------------------- QUOTE "And, as always, your friendship, help, and dedication to the advancement of Texas Celica dominance is GREATLY appreciated. 95celicast has his 1mz back by a s54 so I figure for now the stock gt will work until I want to build more power but I plan on leaving it fairly stock with a few light bolt ons an isn't the s54 good for little over 210hp?
if im wrong please tell me did you figure out the wiring harness? that's the one thing idont have figured out yet -------------------- 95 gt coupe, v6 swap weekend toy

the S54 will take the power no problem.
the toyota trucks also came with a 3VZ for a few years. Personally id go with a 1MZ, its about 200 lbs lighter and much better in mileage -------------------- 2001 Celica GT-S Turbo

im Goin with3vz due to how easy I seemto be able to find them
ok I want to make sure I got this all straight ecu doesn't matter as long as its for 3vz I have to make a pass side mount the s54 an other mount will work fine ok an now a couple easy questions the stock axles still work an right? an I need to use a 3zv flywheel an pressure plate an a 5s clutch disc an to bearing an the stock gt pump is big enough or do ii need to up to a supra fuelpump who can do the wiring harness? -------------------- 95 gt coupe, v6 swap weekend toy

I've been doing a little research on the topic since my motor is out right now and I'm exploring options for what to replace it with.
Your area will probably be different but I found that the 3VZ and 1MZ ran about $1600 to $2000 at the salvage yard while the 3MZ was around $700. Not sure why that is, I don't know if a decent 3VZ is getting harder to come by or what. I've read a lot obout the sludging issues with the 1MZ. Some say it's because of owner neglect and the motor is fine while others say it's a bad engine design that lets the oil overheat in the heads. I've read enough that I'm just going to avoid that engine all together, otherwaise it would be a great swap. Simpler than the 3MZ and lighter and more powerful than the 3VZ. Most of the swaps I've seen switch the trany to a e153. The s54 will work but the gearing is not ideal for the V6. The s51 came in the camry but manual camrys are harder to find than the autos. I've heard of using the s54 with the camry internals to get the right gear ratios but I haven't seen a detailed discussion on it or even a report from someone that has done it. I think for me I'm going to go with the 3MZ. Keep reading up on it. The MR2 folks have done a lot of pioneering. |

The manual 3vz came with an e53 trans. the s54 should handle the power ok, but remember toyota went through the trouble of putting the 3vz/e53 combo in the same chassis as the 5s/s54, so the bigger trans, different axles, etc was justified by their engineers enough to complicate production like that...
also the gear ratios as stated will be optimized for the v6. IIRC before i pulled my 3vz/e53 at 70 i was spinning 2600 rpm e series trans: ST205 shift cables ST205 rear mount GT front mount GT drivers mount MR2 turbo inner axles ST185 outter axles custom passenger mount stock clutch kit s54 trans: Stock front, rear, drivers mounts Stock axles stock shift cables 3vz fly and pressure plate 5s clutch disc and bearing custom passenger mount. cheak out my v6 swap, there should be a lot of info there for you too. 3vz ecu is the least picky of any toyota ecu i have dealt with. 3vz with a proper y pipe and advanced timing has shown to gain 30 hp putting it above the newer 1mz hp levels. BUT the 1mz IS much lighter. also i havent tackled the wiring yet. im starting it this weekend. just checked toyotas EPC and they use the same fuel pump in the 5s camry as the v6 camry -------------------- QUOTE "And, as always, your friendship, help, and dedication to the advancement of Texas Celica dominance is GREATLY appreciated. The S54 can handle around 300 hp but as it has been said many times now, the gearing won't be great. As for wiring, there is a guy on several MR2 boards that can do it for you, make a plug and play harness. Look up mr220v. Stock axles will work with the S54 trans, but not the E153. You need MR2 inners, ST185 outers, and some sort of spacer. There is more specific information on that floating around somewhere in the 3S-GTE swap threads.
I support this swap 100%. Let's get a V6 in your car! -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates. Even Socrates told us to use the search button!

I have never seen a 1MZ that was anywhere near 1600 - 2000. I got mine with 90k confirmed miles with all accessories for $750. If you're buying one of the newer 1MZ's (97+) then maybe, but it's a newer motor, it's lighter, and ultimately more delicate than the 3VZ. If your build plans involve turbo, then 3VZ is your best bet. If you're going to stay n/a or a TRD S/C then 1MZ - specifically the 97+ because it becomes PnP. have MR220V do up a harness, mate it to a S54 to retain axles, have a passenger mount fabricated, bolt in, plug in, and away you go. The newer version of the 1MZ have ~190whp. They go up to just under 250 with the factory s/c and no other supporting modifications. Add in headers (a major bottleneck on the 1MZ), intake, exhaust, Walbro or Supra fuel pump, and potentially a standalone EMS down the road and you've got yourself set for a reliable low maintenance powerhouse.

I just got my 5S back in the car tonight. The passenger side motor mount had sheared off at the block. Had to pull the motor to fix it along with a bunch of other stuff that broke as a result. Long story short, I'm not itching to pull the motor again and do a swap but I know the motors days are numbered and I should start getting things together.
Here's what I have gathered thus far: From Wikipedia: The Toyota MZ engine family is a V6 piston engine series. The MZ series has an aluminum engine block and aluminum alloy DOHC cylinder heads. The cylinders are lined with cast iron, and are of a closed deck design (no open space between the bores). The engine is a 60 degree V6 design. It uses multiport fuel injection (MFI), four valves per cylinder, a one-piece cast camshaft and a cast aluminum intake manifold. The MZ family is a lightweight V6 engine of an all-aluminum design, using lighter weight parts than the heavier duty VZ block engines in an effort to lower production costs, decrease engine weight, and decrease reciprocating weight without sacrificing reliability. Toyota sought to enhance the drivability pattern of the engine (over the 3VZ) at exactly 3000 rpm, since that was the typical engine speed for motors cruising on the highway. The result was less cylinder distortion coupled with the decreased weight of rotating assemblies, smoother operation at that engine speed, and increased engine efficiency. They feature cast aluminum pistons with an anti-friction resin coating (moly) and valve depressions that decrease the chance of valve-to-piston interference in case of timing belt failure on motors without VVT-i. They also use steel rings, smaller-diameter shot-peened rods, and a forged steel crankshaft. This engine has been phased out in most markets, replaced by variants of the new GR series. 1MZ-FE The 1MZ-FE is a 3.0 L (2994 cc) engine. Bore is 87.5 mm and stroke is 83 mm. Output is 168–190 hp @ 5200–5400 rpm with 183–193 lb·ft of torque at 4400 rpm. Horsepower ratings dropped after the Society of Automotive Engineers implemented a new power measurement system for vehicle engines, Toyota engines rated on 87 octane dropped the most, compared to the same engines used by Lexus rated on 91 octane. It has bucket tappets and was designed for good fuel economy without an overall performance trade-off. The 1MZ-FE was on Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1996. Applications: · 1994–2003 Toyota Camry (V6) · 1994–2003 Lexus ES 300 & Toyota Windom (Japanese domestic market) · 1995–2004 Toyota Avalon & 2000 Toyota Pronard (Avalon for Japanese domestic market) · 1997–2003 Lexus RX 300 · Toyota Harrier (non-US markets) · 1998–2000 Toyota Sienna · 1999–2003 Toyota Solara (V6) · 2000– Toyota Estima (Japanese domestic market) Toyota Racing Development offered a bolt-on TRD supercharger kit for the 1997–2000 Camry, 1998–2000 Sienna and 1999–2000 Solara. Power output was bumped to 242 hp and 242 ft·lbf of torque. The 1MZ-FE with VVT-i is used in the Avalon, Highlander, Sienna and Camry. Output is 210 hp (156 kW) at 5800 rpm with 222 ft·lbf (328 N·m) of torque at 4400 rpm. Early versions of the VVT-i 1MZ used a dual throttle body, cast aluminum intake manifold, and EGR block off plates on the exhaust manifolds. Later versions used an ABS plastic intake manifold to further weight reduction and decrease cost. These versions may also have drive-by-wire/electronic throttle control. Applications: · 1999–2003 Lexus RX 300 (US market) · 1999–2003 Lexus ES 300 · 2000–2004 Toyota Avalon · 2001–2003 Toyota Highlander/Kluger · 2001–2003 Toyota Sienna · 2002– Toyota Alphard (Japanese domestic market) · 2003–2006 Toyota Camry (V6) Back to Rocket: All that really made me want to go with the 1MZ but the oil gelling issues have given me reason to be concerned. It's been hard to wade through all the info on the matter because there is so much of it and it's hard to tell who is telling the truth. There are guys on the camry and sienna forums that swear up and down that they changed the oil more frequently than Toyota specifies and they still got sludge. Here is a list of the V6 vehicles recalled for the oil gelling issue: · Toyota Camry V6 1997-2002 · Toyota Solara V6 1999-2002 · Toyota Sienna V6 1998-2002 · Toyota Avalon V6 1997-2002 · Toyota Highlander V6 2001-2002 · Lexus ES300 1997-2002 · Lexus RX300 1999-2002 What's interesting is that the 5S-FE was recalled to. I deleted those from the list just because I was only keeping information about the V6 engines but the 98-99 celica was part of the recall. |

I didn't bore anything out. I bought a Fidanza unit for a Solara V6 and bolted it on.
And then for it to bolt up properly to the transmission (using the S54) you will need a clutch disk with the same contact surface as the Solara Flywheel. My solution was a Stage 2 Kevlar clutch kit from South Bend Clutch for a MR2 turbo that had been custom splined for the S54. A $700 solution. Or you can get an OEM flywheel from a 2000 Camry V6 on the cheap from car-part.com and run a standard Celica GT clutch kit. You'll have less contact surface to the flywheel and it may slip, but it can be done that way. I don't recommend it though. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

ok this is probably a stupid question but do I need to completely rebuild the motor since it has 2almost 200000 miles on it or could I do a light rebuild for now as long as the compression checks out ok
an the do a full complete tear down an rebuild before I try to turbo been told they are a tough motor so not sure what to do I've heard just change timing belt an waterpump an new head gaskets an it'll be good for another 100000 but just want more opinions -------------------- 95 gt coupe, v6 swap weekend toy

Better safe than sorry. I'd at least replace plugs, wires, dizzy, gaskets, water and oil pumps, thermostat, and timing belt.

Tear the motor down and check the bores for damage. If no damage then put it back together with all new gaskets. If the bores are showing vertical wear then you should have it sent to a machine shop.
I understand you're wanting to do this on a budget, but buying a mystery high mileage motor and assuming it's fine seems crazy to me. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

If the Celica has the same return-style fuel system as the MR2 then you can take the fuel rails and associated gear off of a 94/96 and bolt it to the 97+
Yours is the newer version (97+) because it has wasted spark ignition system, where I have 6 individual COP. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money
