I'm in the market for an e-153 lsd transmission. After doing some searching on this site, and some searching on the web I've gotten myself confused. I've heard a lot of members say that they preferred the e-153 out of the Solara due to the newer better bearings, but after searching around online it came to my attention that the Solara's were not available with the limited slip, and that i would have to buy the LSD separate and install it. Is this true? What about the v6 camry? Is that non-lsd as well? It would be pointless for me to go through all of this conversion crap just to get a non-lsd transmission.

I think the Turbo MR2 is the only one with factory LSD. Maybe only two years worth of MR2s too? Its just a LOT more expensive than getting a camry/solara transmission out of the local scrap yard.

Would it really be that much more? Because then I would have to buy a dif and have it installed.

the amount of work = cost of an LSD diff to swap in a non LSD trans, is not worthy unless you are doing a full rebuild on the trans. these trans are very strong so just find a LSD trans in good condition, check on MR2oc, they tend to go cheaper there if you are patient, I've seen LSD trans for as low as 350 there, I paid 500 for mine from a member of MR2oc.

I would have to get the shift linkage from a Camry or solar then so that it would actually adapt. How much did that cost you culpable?

The shift linkage wont work, an mr2 has the shift linkage going towards the front of the car not the rear like FWD cars.

I know that it has to be removed and replaced by a Camry or solara shift linkage so that it will point the right direction.

I thought the GT4 shift linkage just fits right onto the e-153.

Yes it does, but I was under the impression that the Camry and solara linkage would fit too.

Just seems like a massively expensive undertaking: buy used tranny, get proper linkage, get two sets of axles to make into a single pair, then get a gt4 rear motor mount, then get gt4 shifter cables....even with used parts that's like 2g's!

Changing the differential out in the E-153 is not a big deal, i did it, i bought a non lsd trans from a v6 camry and swapped the LSD diff in it, took me a couple of hours but was in no way too chalenging

Yeah, cars can be expensive. I don't believe that the camry / solara shift linkage fits; never heard of anyone using it.

Where did you source the LSD diff?

the 7th gen celica has the linkage on the front. the MR2 spyder actually has the linkage on the rear. try again....

to the OP, get a new Solara trans and an aftermarket LSD. you have to modify the case and change several parts to change the MR2 tranny to work in the 6thgen.

if you get a factory LSD its MUCH harder to source axles as lsd takes special ones (mr2 turbo LSD axles, only place i found em is used or from the dealer...).

the TRD and aftermarket lsd use regular mr2 turbo inners

but unless your over or planning to be over 300 hp i wouldnt worry about it... the S54 cand take it

I think he wants to fit a e153 in a 6g, not a 6 speed into a 7th gen, try again

^^^ i know exactly what he is trying to do, im speaking by experience. i know where things are on all these transmission.

we adapted the MR2 turbo transmission to mount to the 2ZZ. they both have the shift linkage on the same side. (the front) the E153 out of a solara has the linkage on the back, like a ST205 (duh, its the same tranny, almost)

Smaay is right, and one of the biggest experts on this topic. I would tread lightly, you may need his help one day. No reason to get in a bunch over a simple topic. This forum is for learning, and there are things that you will need help with in the future. I appreciate answers from all of you! Lets keep this light hearted!

I used the shift linkage from a AWD trans.

and swapping a LSD into a trans, is not a huge deal with the proper tools, but I still stand by my point.

the cost of a non LSD trans + cost of LSD + hours of work in install it is not cost efective, unless you manage to score both for a GREAT deal.

non LSD trans low mileage goes for around 350, and LSD diff goes for at least 350 as well, thats 700, you can find LSD trans for around 500 if you look hard enough.

My bad, my original post I meant that he would have to have the case machined it just didnt sound right so I left it at the fwd vs mr2 trans having different layouts of the linkage. It seemed rude to the OP and I wanted to leave the door open to alternatives to modifying the case. Surely there is kit or combination of linkages that will allow the mr2 trans to adapt to the celica shifter.

I think the only human being in the world I know that scores ridiculously good online deals is you. The cheapest I found a TRD LSD for the E153 was $585 on eBay and I had to have a genuine TRD part, lol. Better than the $1200 for the Quaife I was mentally preparing myself to spend, lol. I don't know how you've scored so many of your goodies, mano. Unless someone spends the entire day from forum to forum or is extremely patient for a deal, I don't think anyone could top you. laugh.gif

I'll take my cheap-ness as a compliment, I think the deal I'm the most proud of is the TRD skirts ( OEM ) which I got for 45 dollars Shipped from UK. biggrin.gif I dont think that's ever happening again.
