Hey guys, I'm currently racking my brain trying to figure out how to get my latest idea for the Celica to work. I want my radio to stay on when I turn the car off and take my key out until the driver's side door is opened and then closed. If the door is already open when the car is turned off, I want the power to turn off as soon as the driver's door is closed.
I know that if I want to keep the radio on until the door is open, I can use this, but keeping it on until the door is opened and then closed is something I'm just having trouble with. ![]() Anyone have any ideas? -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

id suggest reading into how neons do it. they have like a five second or so delay after the car is off. unless you were looking at more time then that, that would be a good idea.

I don't want to use timers or anything though. I want to use SPDT automotive relays to do this.

I would suggest using the sensor on the dome light somehow. Ya know where it is on the right hand side of the door, you can push it in and out. I think thats what ur already talking about tho so im confused.

I would use the door trigger(which is negative on our cars) for this. The door trigger activates the dome light. ![]() -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

is there anyway you could tap into the powersource to the windows or headlights?? because both of those stay on until the drivers door opens.
you could find cars that already have this installed and try and get a wiring diagram to it. for example my dads 2003 chevy truck does it. |

I could tap into the windows or headlight circuits, though they don't solve what I want to do. If I wanted to simply have the radio turn off when the door is opened, this would work well, but that's not what I want. ![]() Are you maybe thinking of having the radio turn off when the door is opened? I know my friend's dad's 2002 Chevy Silverado does this, but it won't turn off the radio once the door is opened and then closed. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

What about hooking the ground from the radio/relay, be grounded when the door switch is open. That way, when the switch is closed(door closed), it cuts the ground.
Of course, you would have to wire another ground, perhaps through another relay, so you could have the radio on when the door is closed and the car is on. maybe something like that would work? I'm not too good with the wiring with relays and such. Sounds good in my head though. ![]() |

That's a good idea. I'll think about this and see if I can get something figured out. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

could you give a more detailed instruction on this. my friends 95 camarao does that and i'Ve always wanted the radio to quit playing until the door is opened. i dont really understand why they don't do this stock since the lights, and power windows do. cormudgen |

Basically, you'll wire up a couple relays like this:
![]() I'm assuming you know about SPDT automotive relays because you installed your own alarm. If not, let me know, and I'll help you out some more. ![]() -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

unfortunately i dont, although it doesnt look had from the picture....(could be sadly mistaken though). i understand where the green wire, red, and purple wires go(assumin i can fine the radios accessory wire in the harnes) and appears that the black wire simply goes from one relay to anther. if thats all their is to it i shouldnt have a problem. where can i pick up relays such as these? radio shack? if i have it partialy right and its easy enough to explain on here take a shot at it. otherwise i can hit you up on AIM.

why don't you just do like what i did and buy remote start where you don't even have to get in to the car and the tunes will turn on.

Maybe someone would rather not spend any money for this instead of a lot for a hard-to-install remote starter, or maybe they don't want remote start, or maybe they actually want their car to actually do the purpose asked for, and not something else. ![]() Edit: And Cormudgen, you can find SPDT automotive relays at your local auto parts store, or Radio Shack. Expect to pay $5-6 though instead of about $.75 if you buy them online. ![]() -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

what about running it through the little red light that is on when the door is open and then goes off when you close the door? anyone thought of this before? not sure if it would push enough power tho.

You'd still need to use just as many relays to do this. ![]() -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

Would it be possible to add a second trigger, the one goes off when you open the door and the second goes off when you close the door? For something that sounds so simple I cant even began to think of a solution. Do you have an alarm? |

you could hook up a trigger that could turn off your radio when you arm your car just a thought DREW |

Hehe...you guys are right. I do have an alarm, and yes, I thought about setting the stereo to turn off once I arm the alarm, but I decided that I'd rather have it turn off when the door closes.

just a thought.. if you manage to set this up so your car radio turns off when you get out and shut the door... what happens when you get into the car, your radio turns on, you start the car and shut the door... and your radio turns off....think that would kinda suck.. but you know more about electric stuff than I do coomer so you prolly have a way to address this issue

When the ignition or accessory power would be on, the radio would stay on, regardless of whether or not the door is opened or closed. ![]() -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

probably already considered but to make it real easy...your headlights will cut when the door is opened...just connect into that relay and you should be fine

that would simply make it cut off when he opened the door. He wants it to cut off when he closes his door. cormudgen |

Hey Coomer just thought of something. You could wire into the ignition ring light I know it comes on when you open the doors and goes of a couple seconds after you shut them but I can't remember if it stays on the whole time the door is open. I guess that's the best I can come up with. Hope it helps.

Coomer - I know how to do it - IM me on AOL and we'll discuss - you have to change one wire on the radio and it " " should work.

Well I just checked about the ignition key ring. it'd work just like the dome light only you'd have a 2 second delay before it went off. the door would also have to be opened before the car was shut off or else it would turn the head unit off. that's the easiest way to do it but probably not what you're looking for.
