Have a knock or clunk felt in in the steering wheel when either turn left or right or going over bumps. cant tell if its the rack or the steering u joint that connects to the rack and column. replace the inner rack ends and tie rod ends. but the knock is def something to do with the steering. any input would be great.

could be rack mount bushings. your pinion shaft might be loose, like what you are saying but open it up and check - doesnt hurt. does it sound like from the steering or from like a ball joint? check if your rack moves when you steer, have someone steer and you look at it. or inspect the rack bushings, thats a good place to start. it could be anywhere between steering and suspension. yes I'm known for reviving old threads... so I have steering wheel issue. If I take a on ramp going fast, turning right (my steering wheel will stick to the right while I'm driving straight) and if I'm taking an on ramp going fast, turning left(my steering wheel will stick to the left) a mechanic said my bushings are worn out. Do we have bushings in the steering rack?? yea trd proven what are these bushings you speak of??? My mechanic said this to me but I thought he was crazy. Any diagrams of what your speaking of?? will this be replaced if I buy new inner tie rod(the long ones) As far as the bushings you speaking of where the long 17mm bolt goes through??! -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

inner tie rods are different.. Rack bushing wraps around the rack like a sway bar bushings thats big and has extra bushings where all the bolts mount the steering rack to the frame. its probably called stopper in technical terms.
Looks something like below. #9 and #10 ![]() This post has been edited by trdproven: Jun 28, 2012 - 9:53 PM -------------------- 94 Celica GT

yea looks like that too, actually looks like that on my tacoma too, never really checked it in the celica. My pic looks more like a honda's. just look around at all the mounting bolts, there should be some type of bushing or grommet looking bushing. how does your rack look or move when someone steers left to right and you are looking at the rack. again there should be more pressure when the car is on the ground but if it is on jacks you might not see much movement if any at all. i usually like to check it if you can try to find a way to look at the rack while you are turning it while its on the ground. if you don't see much movement thats good. but there are two things to check if it moves while it hits bumps or side to side movement. you can take out the bushings to see.
