So... I gotta ask. Which handles better- this or the MR2?

The FR-S feels more confident in the turns - Likely a result of double wishbone suspension... and the whole brand new car thing. The MR2 would keep up in the turns though, and would definitely win in the straights. The FR-S is not a fast car.

Plus sides:

30's mpg on highway. The bulk of my commute - already seeing 34 vs 21 in the MR2.
$55.50/mo for full coverage insurance - versus $70/mo for liability on the MR2... and I am 25.

Congrats! I was skeptical of the manual's lower mpg of the auto. Someone else that has one is averaging a little over 31 combined. I guess they expected manual owners to redline it. rolleyes.gif Should post more pics when you have the chance, like the colour choice!

Gear ratios are shorter in the manual, which is why it has lower. I think the window sticker says combined MPG is 25. Hold on let me go grab it...

Strange, everyone that has the manual and drives like a sane person has been getting equivalent to the auto's rating. I'd go manual even with the lower mpg, it's just better that way. tongue.gif I do know I want one really bad, especially with some of the parts that're supposed to come out for it.

I'm jealous, but you already know that, since I have to wait a couple of years to get mine. GBS is a really good color for this car and I'm happy for you. Your garage is full of win!

I actually didn't end up getting GBS (Ultramarine). While that is what I ordered, I came upon a DGM (Asphalt) that was available, so I snagged it.

Now my FR-S and my girlfriend's tC are the same color rolleyes.gif

Damn, I didn't even pay attention close enough to realize it was Asphalt - the plus side being the color looks better on the FR-S than a tC. LOL

And no options at all, most of the ones floating in the SE region have tint and mats pre-loaded.

No STI or ISF swaps. Keeping it stock more or less. Tint, 5AD lip spoiler, eibach springs, Opti-coat and a self healing clear bra on the whole hood, fenders, and bumper.

The 5 Axis kit looks super cool, would definitely get it. I think TRD is in the process of releasing springs for it, among other things.

TRD is rebranding H&R springs for it. I will likely just do the Pro-kit, because I don't want to sacrifice ride comfort.

I can understand that for a daily driver. I prefer a stiff ride in a car, just makes me more confident in driving it. Doesn't have to be racecar stiff, I'm sure the FR-S stock is more than enough. Looked at Eibach's site, they gave the drop rates but not stiffness. Noticed they have sway bars for it, and are working on coil-overs.

Yeah I was following the tein saga on ft86club. I guess Toyota/Scion dealers can get tein as dealer option. I will likely be doing the Eibach prokit - or the Sportlines if they aren't too low/harsh.

I am a bit sad I didn't get Ultramarine, but I really do like asphalt. I parked it right next to my girlfriend's tC to compare the colors and it is WAY darker than hers.

I took it for tint this morning. Suntek Carbon 18%. Brought it home and washed it. I started drying and the surface felt like sandpaper on my waffle towel, so I busted out the clay and wax and gave it a good once over.

It feels very planted - even for having sh*tty Prius tires on it. A couple of the other FRS at the show today had some simple modifications like catback exhausts, lightweight crank pulleys, strut bars, etc. It was nice to chat with the guys about the car, and answer questions for all of the looky-lous.

Ended up winning awards:

- PSTOC lifetime achievement award for my club contributions

And the following for the MR2:

- "Lenny likes" award (Thanks Lenny!)
- PSTOC Choice award

2.44hp and 1.38 ft lb torque to the wheels, seems legit.

Most of the vendors on the FRS/BRZ forums will reset the ECU prior to re-dynoing so the numbers get inflated. My numbers are without a break in-between runs short of the 2 minutes it took to install the new piping and filter.

5000 rpms and up....

Here are my 4th gear runs:

nice mods, will be following, unfortunately wont mod the car for a while, like it as is.

If they push out a convertible, i may end up getting it.

I read somewhere that the platform could accommodate a convertible. Maybe if they continue to sell really well there'll be a convertible along with one that has the WRX STI engine. biggrin.gif

More torque would be nice, but it does fine for only weighing ~20lbs more than a Celica GT. (2580lbs to 2600lbs)

FR-S P/W ratio: .076
Celica P/W ratio: .052

Nothing stellar by any means, but a difference. Plus the 5S is made for low end torque. You're comparing apples to oranges here.

Perhaps that value is with all fluids.

Even with that value, P/W is at .072.

Those trucker stops should have one. Still 2,758 pounds being full of fluids isn't bad. Especially in today's safety and computer stuffed cars.

That is how Subaru/Toyota made it. Aftermarket manufacturers are trying to lessen the dip with mods and a tune.

that is a knarly dip in torque. its really affecting the horsepower. if that dip can be straightened out, i have no doubt it will raise the HP curve 20-25 more ponies. does this engine have any kind of VVT? if so thats where it would be tuned out.

Oh this, this I want to discuss. Why is the wear rating something like 140 or 240 when it's a low rolling-resistance design, neither a grippy tire? Baffled me when I saw that.

Yes the 4U-GSE motor has VVT. Someone will eventually figure out the torque dip. Its gone on turbo applications, but I'd like to see a N/A fix with mods in conjunction with a tune.

240 tread rating. I'm not going to worry about them for now. Too much grip and the car wouldn't be as much fun as it is.

I really like the car a lot but couldn't imagine getting one now with the family. The backseats have no room. If it was available back in 05-06 I would have bought it then. Enjoy it.

I'm not speaking of the grip, I'm speaking of the sh!t wear in conjunction with no grip; I am wondering why such a hard tire is so quick to wear.

Ok, Ok ... touché. I just meant, I like driving a car that you don't see everywhere. For instance, when myself and a few of my friends went to London to go to college for a semester, the FIRST thing I remember after leaving the bus station (bus picked us up at the airport) was seeing a brand new Porsche 911 and a Ferrari 360 (this was in 02 so the 360 was still in production). We immediately took pictures of the cars. But as the days went on we realized that at least 50% of the cars we saw around there were Porsche, Ferrari, high end BMW and Mercedes. It got old. I ended up getting more excited seeing Integra/Civic Type R's and GT-Fours. Now, the 911 is right up there in my book with the 350z, Corvette (regular or Z06), Camaro SS, and Firebird WS6. They're nice enough that my eye picks them up, but my level of desire for them is a 2 or 3 out of 10; "It's just another ..." is what I say to myself. I'm even mildly like that to lower end Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Vipers (I'm around the Bills and the Sabre's players a lot and my uncle has 2 Vipers and a Ferrari). Point is, I don't want that to happen to the FR-S/BR-Z. I don't want it to become another TC/WRX that I see everywhere and think "Great ... another one of those ...".

I think that's what the Lexus LF-A is for. It doesn't matter if the FR-S is a sports car or not; it's a $25k car built by Toyota. It's going to be everywhere, just like the tC, whether we like it or not.

haha wow even more fail ya Its official its a 90% Subaru with 10% Toyota.

I hear Subaru has done a good job! thumbs up to Subaru. two thumbs down for Toyota.

this reminds me of the Mitsubishi dodge partnership. with the 3000GT/Stealth and Eclipse/Talon. there is no way dodge can ever take credit for what Mitsubishi did.

there will always be haters with this car, especially to toyota.

I agree. Though I don't hate on the car, I think it's beautiful and I love both Subaru and Toyota, I drive both. Hell, my fastest car and the one I've put the most time and energy into is my Subaru, but I would in no way buy an FR-S because of my deep love of Toyota and their engineering. It's a Subaru as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, this reminds me of the whole Mitsu/Daimler deal in the late 80's to late 90's. There are a handful of cars that Mitsu designed 90 - 95% of for Daimler. Not that I'm a DSM fan in ANY way thumbsdown.gif

lol ... you know what I mean. That's like arguing that my RDX isn't a Honda because in the US they decided to slap a different badge on it. And this is kind of my point.

Who cares what it is branded as. They're the same car and the FR-S costs less. Is it a Toyota? No... but who cares. This loyalist crap for a car company who doesn't care about you is stupid. They make a car by whatever means will net them the most money. In this case Toyota decided that was punting it to Subaru.

If you don't like it, I'm sorry... but this is my thread, so....

Wow ... I think people aren't getting what I'm saying. I was AGREEING that there will be haters and that it is unwarranted. I was saying that I'm smart enough that I would never buy and FR-S/BZ-R/GT86 out of love for Toyota because it's not one and people need to realize that and stop hating on it. It's still an incredible car and designed very well IMHO and should be loved for that reason, or if your into Subaru's.

Am I disappointed that Toyota had little to do with the first sports car that has held one of their (or pseudonym) moniker's in over a decade (excluding the SC/Soarer)? Sure I am ... I'm really looking forward to the next Toyota designed sports car as much as the next enthusiast. But this car is still a beautiful piece of work. Not hating on it in anyway or form. When I was saying I wouldn't buy it "because of my deep love of Toyota and their engineering" I meant that wouldn't be the REASON I'd buy it. If I were to buy one, it's because I also love Subaru and believe that they are almost as brilliant engineers.

Not necessarily directed at you, but others in the thread and those who might be tempted to post their negative opinions later.

LOL, ^^^ yeah we hijacked this thread.

But i love this car so much, its STOCK, and i like it that way, maybe some tint and wheels, but thats it.

for the first time i love to drive a car, so much that i hate to be wrenching on it so it will limit me from driving it.

As long as it's a good car, does it really matter who made it? Exactly. redface.gif
