Since I've decided to keep my Celica after all, figured I'd do something about the only thing really holding it back: the clear peel... Obviously the first thing I'll try doing is wet-sanding the afflicted area and try to touch up the clear, try and save the paint that's there. My concern though is the paint that's exposed will disappear in the process, then that leaves me with an even bigger problem. The only aerosol can I can find for my colour costs $30 per 10oz can... Though doing that it won't match the existing paint. Another option is a full car respray, but then we're talking multiple hundreds and lots of work for a colour I don't even like. Yes I could respray the car black, but then every time I open the hood or peel back the carpet and saw red I'd twitch and collapse. So the only other option is to just cover up the areas that're bad and hide it. My thought was maybe to just sticker bomb the areas that've peeled. Which I'm not crazy about the phase, but it has to look better than peeling clear... That or paint something on in the area, I don't know. I'm thinking about painting the door handles, mirrors, tag bezel, and maybe the headlight "pockets" in black. Anyhow, some pictures are below to illustrate the issue at hand. Any suggestions that don't include PlastiDip are welcomed. tongue.gif

Buy a second Celia that is black with a dead engine, put your engine into said celica and you now have a black one biggrin.gif

I thought about buying a black shell. Would be such a pain to swap EVERYTHING over though...

Alternativly, you could:
Buy a black shell and a 3S-GTE or 5S-FE (Then turbo it) and get a car that is both black and faster biggrin.gif Fits both criteria

Problem with repairing clear is any more that you put on will be out of place with the rest of the car...

have you thought about a two tone paint job or some racing stripes as a temporary setup?
I'm not much into it but hey it might look better than peeling clear.

I'll overlap it so it'll feather in, and there'll just be spots of nicer paint. Less noticeable than flaky dull spots anyhow.

I thought about painting the spoiler black and then running stripes that follow the edges of the spoiler to the front of the car.

That's what I'm going to try doing first. I'm just afraid the exposed paint is so dead it'll go right through it. Guess I'll find out sometime tomorrow which path I'll be going.

I do, so very badly. I can't afford to do a full body respray though, and I'm too OCD to have a red engine bay on a black car. If the car was black it wouldn't bother me though painting the car blue for example. For the longest time the engine bay and interior metal of cars was black regardless of exterior colour. The only reason I bought the car was that it was my uncle's, had it not been for that I'd held out for another colour.

Yes. tongue.gif I'm about to test a small area and see what happens. Hopefully I'll be able to sand it down and the colour coat isn't completely dead, and can respray the clear. If not then I'll have to figure it out from there. PlastiDip is so expensive though, would be cheaper to cover it in enamel paint. Better looking too...

Check this thread out. It might help you out before spending any money.

He had some pictures of a red 5th gen in that thread too. That car looked unsavable to me but it looked like a brand new paint job when he was finished. It was a $70 kit from Meguiar's that he is using.

Edit: Never mind, the 5th gen is on that page. I just didn't scroll far enough.

I don't have permission to access the page. redface.gif I tested on the passenger side first, since it was the last to peel. Grabbed the wrong grit, 600 instead of 1000... Going through 1000, 2000, rubbing and polishing compound, then Meguiar's 3 step brought it back though. All sanding was done wet. Would've turned out nicely had it not been for the paint being so dead it exposed metal... On the bright side I did get the clear peel feathered back... Guess I'll do the driver side too, regardless of what I do I have to feather back the peel. I'll try starting with wet 2000 first though this time.

Your problem really is that your car is RED. They seem to fade and peel the best. Red also isn't my top choice for color as well so i'm with you on that. I would hate to have a black (or anything other color) car and opening your hood to a red engine bay.

Indeed, I hate red with a burning passion. My MKIII Supra I literally watched it go from red to pink in a year, someone must've done a cheap respray. If it wasn't for the fact the Celica was my uncle's and he sold it to me for what he had in it, I would've gotten something else. Was able to do a small spot on the driver's side starting with wet 2000 and going through the compounds, polishes, and waxes. Did much better, though except for having faded flaky spots there're now richer coloured spots from where the colour coat was buffed back. Also that one spot on the passenger I suppose it's primer and not metal since it's completely smooth. Anyhow, it's better than what it was I suppose. Will have to post pictures once done, started raining and have to wait for it to stop. If anything I can still cover the really bad spots with a decal, i.e. the passenger side.

I hear you. I come so close to buying these red GTs around me but after seeing pics, I just can't do it. There was this red one that had the spoiler, door handles, and headlight areas PLASTIDIPPED black which didn't look too bad but I knew what it was hiding underneath.

The only cars that should be red are those made by Ferrari. Even then most models I'd want in something not red. I've thought about finding a black shell and swapping everything over. Not only is doing all of that a royal pain in the ass, but finding a shell with a clean title is even harder... If it was black or blue I'd be a lot happier with it. Had it not been my uncle's I wouldn't have bought it, solely for the fact it is red. I thought it was something I could overlook, but I guess I was wrong. I don't know what I'd replace it with though, as buying another Celica would just be kind of silly. That and people would really start to doubt my sanity.

Not really alot to do with clearcoat apart from complete respray. There are ways of hiding it, but in the end the colour is still be exposed and will easily fade.

I sold my last car because too many of the panels were beginning to do this. Bird crap had left cracks in it, and i was able to sell it before it got worse.

There are theree things you can do

A. Sell and buy a tidier Celica - You will lose a bit on resale...
B- Completely respray the car. This will cost a bit, but if you love the car enough then this is worth doing.
C- Ignore it and not worry about it. Some people don't really worry about it too much (i don't know why, my car must be in perfect condition lol)

Another thing you can do, is get like a 3M coating on your car. Like a film and you can customise your car to your own look. Ill send you a link at some point

I got it to where it's not as blatantly noticeable, at least from a small distance it's not too bad. I don't have very much in my car, I'll be able to break even if not make money. So that's not an issue. If I sell it I'll buy something else. I would respray the car, but I hate red. The cost of a proper color change would cost more than the car is worth. Ignoring it isn't an option either, I'm too OCD.

The only reason I bought it is because it belonged to my uncle. Had it not been for that I'd be in something else.

I can't, we didn't get it over here. I'm thinking about a MKIII Supra Turbo.

D: that would be mean! Unfortunately over here we can't import vehicles older than 2005. Which is a shame.

If i had the money i'd buy a AE86 GT w/ bodykit. 50k later haha

Over here they have to be 25 years old or older to import and title. My first car was a MKIII Supra, so it'd be nice to have one again. Though this time with more choo choo sounds. All of the AE86's have been riced and ragged out by punk ass kids who think they can drift. Besides, it isn't faster than what I have now. Certainly isn't more comfortable either. The Supra is faster, and a million times more comfortable. So yay. tongue.gif

Not all AE86's are riced tongue.gif

My friend has one that is completely stripped back waiting to be restored, no rice on it smile.gif

All the ones over here are trashed, so maybe your friend just got really lucky.
