I bought a used cluster from a scrapped GT and as soon as I connected the right plug(if gauges are facing you), the check engine lit up.
Is it possible that the car I got it from, had the light come on and it somehow stayed on the cluster?
On my original cluster there is no problem.
Is it normal that the light is on without the key being in the ignition at all?

I was afraid to start the car with it, with the hopes that the ECU will clear it.

The cluster shouldn't have any memory or control over any lights. It's possible the bulb was burned out on the old cluster. It could be worth swapping bulbs to see if it makes any difference. Did the CEL light up with the key on but the motor off with the old cluster?

I will swap the bulbs to see if it's actually my ECU that's sending the signal.
The CEL did not lit up with the old cluster.

The light should be lighting up with the key on but the engine not running, so I'm thinking the bulb was burned out in the old cluster.

Some clusters are different, depending on years, options, and countries.
compare the back of the new cluster to yours, see if the circuitry is different.

Key on, engine off, the check engine light SHOULD be on! Plug your old cluster in to check.

What's the cel on it? I use to hav a cel on my old cluster because the speed sensor inside the cluster was bad and my speedometer didn't work along with my cruise control. Swapped it out for a different cluster and never saw the cel ever again. So you might have a faulty cluster.

Your speed sensor isn't inside the cluster, it's on the transmission.

Correct, but I believe the signal passes through the cluster on it's way to the PCM.

Yes it is l. Changed it and cel remained on. Researched more and tried swapping the cluster. After the swap. Cel never came back on.

Ok, the problem is still here. As soon as I plug in the cluster the check engine light comes on even, if the key is not in the ignition. If I turn the key to ON with engine off, the CEL goes away. If the car is running there is no CEL as well.

I bought a used cluster from a GT since I sold mine ( a ST ). As soon as I plug it in the CEL comes on even if the key is not in the ignition. If I prep or start the car CEL comes off. Turn off the car, CEL and fans come on. Unplug the bulb, fans turn off. What the hell is going on?

I would assume that GT and ST clusters should be the same, but I think they don't since both have different engine and signals are different. that might be the reason

I have to find a GT and put my cluster in it. Seems like the only way to rule out the cause.
