Hypothetical discussion here (and I tried using the search so bugger off)

What does the best and brightest think about engine performance if you drop the turbo off a 3SGTE? Assume you can boost the compression ratio easily enough and you assume you can run a stand alone ECU (something open source, mega squirt, angry hamster + wheel)?

what BOX said. BEAMS will by far be a better engine than a high compression 3S-GTE with no turbo.

Why would you buy a 3sgte and go NA with it? If you want NA then get a beams. It'll be cheaper and better

I can go disconnect the intercooler piping and tune the spark map in my ems for NA, but I bet Id get 100 whp at most from that 8:1 compression motor.

Beams is the way to go for NA power. It has nice pull and is a lot of fun to drive.

I have no doubt the BEAMS is a better option. To answer the "WHY", it is the perceived lack of part availability for an engine that was never supported by the USDM. As someone who might have to have two or three sets of everything - availability and the price of those parts becomes interesting to me. I don't know a lot about the BEAMS configuration so I don't really know what is interchangeable with parts that are immediately available in the US...

If you want more power and good part availability why not a 1mz v6? More power and parts available at pretty much all parts stores.

Possible, the only thing that might be interesting is its weight.... AND I see its all aluminum....

It weighs less than the 3S-GTE and about the same as the 5S, Smaay has exact numbers I think but don't hold me to that. The only 3S-GTE you could run in and get all parts for, maybe, is the second generation and it has 200 hp with the turbo. Plus it's more involved of a swap than you'd think, so definitely look into the V6. Everyone that's done it here have been very happy with it, plus with Smaay, Lamont, and Kurt every little detail is covered.

Mike has done an AWD conversion. I don't think he's worried about the challenges of a second gen 3S swap. laugh.gif

^^^^^ Just so much win... However, it might be hard to get that past the BS Judges @ Lemons....

Also - a big thanks to everyone chipping in and having a good discussion on the topic bowdown.gif

Ahh, well that makes things make more sense. Might look into making a high compression 5S-GE with some cams then. Put on a big muffler to disguise what's under the hood. tongue.gif

Why do all that to a 2nd 3sgte when you can just buy a 2nd gen NA jdm engine that shares 99% of all the US parts?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/JDM-TOYOTA-CELICA-...c49&vxp=mtr

I remember back in the day with bolt on's people would have their 2nd gen NA in the mid 140 whp. Or you can sources a 1st gen 3sge head and slap it on a 5sfe block. There is a lot more viable options NA than taking a 3sgte and taking the turbo off of it, just my 2 cents.

One upside to getting the 3sgte is that he could sell off all the turbo stuff and almost make all his money back. that money could go towards high compression pistons and a megasquirt.

I started with what I know to do, I swap engine into my car, I knew it was too much work to make it a AWD. I kept it FWD. Went to take a crack at doing the wiring conversion. Than, I realize, shoot, this is out of my league.

The BEAMS is more or less half the price of a 3S-GTE, so not really.
