the one on ebay, i spoke with seller, 1 owner, not exactly low miles, not interested in 5 speed. looks in good condition, Not looking for a resto, i want a car that is drive ready. but its either 8k price range, or pos at 2000 bucks.
only issues with them i see the ac buttons peel off, cheap material i guess -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... I hardly log in anymore, last login Today Sept 6 2019, and I was forced just to clarify a post. LOL

Of the bunch you posted I'd go after the MKII. If you're going to get an automatic the SC300 would be a better buy, especially for what some want for an automatic N/A MKIII. The MKIV Supra being based on the SC300 you have a fair amount of parts interchangeability here and there, and they're not too terribly expensive in great shape. $8,000 would get a really nice 5-speed car, though if you have your heart set on a MKII or MKIII Supra that's understandable too.
A lot of 80's cars are bad about peeling A/C and radio buttons, the process they used to adhere a thin layer of cutout black plastic over a clear plastic button in order to get them to illuminate wasn't the best obviously. Really the biggest thing to watch out for on the MKIII is if the head gasket has been redone properly -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

they're asking a lot for some NA Auto MK3s even though they look to be clean. That Red '88, although it has low miles, is dreaming if they're going to get that price. I find it interesting that the Blue has '89+ tails on it. Of the 2, I'd probably go for the MK2 assuming it's a P-Type and probably offer them about $5500-$6K for it. The fart can on it makes me wonder what kind of life it led though.

believe it or not, the car is not for me, my daughter will learn to drive, and wants the blue supra. she found it, not me.
But not sure if its priced right. Best I could get was that the timing belt was changed 30 k miles ago. Headgasket, I doubt. This was an ladys car per the seller. I have not laid eyes on car yet. I doubt we get it, because I feel its too big of a car for her.... He wont budge on the price though. And the more I search for a cheaper car, I just found raped out supras. -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... Duh, get her a Celica.
![]() The Supra has some awkward dimensions for a first car, something like a 8G Corolla with a 2ZZ/C60 swap would be a much better first car to learn to drive with. Just toss a PFC in there and set the rev limit to 6,000 for her first year of driving and she'll have a regular Corolla. -------------------- |

Here's your solution:
![]() You can find a really nice one for next to nothing, the 22R-E will last forever, and there's not enough power to get into trouble as a starting driver. It's still rear wheel drive and it's a car that can grow with her. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

Nobody wants the regular Celica though, they're too busy wanting a Celica Supra, Supra, or AE86 Corolla. If FWD isn't an issue there's the fourth and fifth gen Celica which no one really wants unless it's an All-Trac. The 6th gen Corolla GT-S AE92 has pop up lights as well, but is FWD like the rest of the Corolla lineup by that point. Surely could get any of those in nice shape for half of what it'd cost to get a nice MKIII. There's also the MR2, but even with low power it's probably not the best first car and it seems nice examples cost a bit now. Again if she has her heart set on the Supra that's one thing, but if it's just a "I want pop up lights" there are a good variety to choose from that won't break the bank. Here's another thought, start her out with a Celica and find a decent MKIII as a good father-daughter project.

you're gonna need to retorque those head bolts or replace them all together along with a new headgasket on those 7Ms. As long as everything else is still healthy, ARP headbolts and an OEM gasket will just fine as long as everything is torqued down properly.

Yes, but at the same time I wouldn't want to have paid twice as much to get one 100% perfect with half the miles and one less owner to turn around and use it as a daily driver and have to leave it outside all the time. Tires aside all the things wrong were small nitpicky stuff or things I want to do in order to make it more to my liking.
If the car is mechanically sound and mostly original who cares if there are some small cosmetic flaws here and there, you're looking at a car that's 24-30 years old so it's to be expected unless it was hermetically sealed. Odds are it won't stay perfect long even through no means of her own, dumb kids at school don't care if a few dings just devalued your car by a couple grand and neither do the idiots in any other parking lot for that matter. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

She'll appreciate it more when she's older and not bouncing it off every curb and guard rail. Something new, something safe. I lost a really close friend partially to an unsafe old car. Had she been in a newer safer car she might have survived. I miss her every day since then, she was too young. Get something new and safe please. -------------------- |

Bitter pretty much said what I've been thinking. Unless they've been driving go-karts since they were knee high really anyone's first car should be something relatively low powered, FWD/AWD, and safe. There was a girl the grade above me with a N/A AW11 MR2, was a nice car in blue with the 5-speed and she ended up totaling it after it snap oversteered and she didn't know how to handle it. Luckily she escaped with just some scratches and bruises, but it could've been worse. I'm all for younger people liking old cars and wanting to own them, really I am, but even when your kid does everything perfect there are still idiots out there. Like my grandfather told me when I started driving, "Watch out like everyone is out there to run you over."
Like I mentioned earlier you might consider getting a project Supra for you two to do, then by the time it's done she'll have some good driving experience under her belt and you won't have to worry about her driving an older RWD sports car. If she has her heart set on popup lights perhaps a '94-97 Miata would be to her liking. It's reliable, fun, and about as safe as you can get having popup lights outside of the fourth gen Firebird and fifth gen Corvette. All good arguments, dont get me wrong. But a mk3 supra is a turd of 3500 pounds with 200hp that mostly gets 160 to the wheels. Not fast. Big interior. Automatic, even slower, Gold old metal as back in the days. Rwd is only unsafe when you drive stupid.

The headgasket obviously needs to be redone and even then you have to worry about rod knock due to coolant in the oil. Then you have to worry about the wiring harness getting brittle and losing electrical connections randomly which can leave you stranded. I would recommend a 90s car for something reliable. There are very very few cars from the 80s that are reliable these days unless they are modified and LOADS of cars from the 90s that will be dead reliable and cheap. Get her a miata, they are perfect for teenage girls(and only teenage girls). This post has been edited by SupraKid: May 17, 2016 - 12:25 PM |

If you and your daughter are open to American cars and the nonsense they bring a '98-02 3.8 Firebird would be fairly ideal. The 3.8 Buick is one of the best motors ever made and with 200hp is peppy enough for most, gets 19/30 on 87, and best of all nice examples are cheap because most people that want a F-body want the V8 models. ABS is standard and it has popup lights, modern crash safety etc... And you can get them in pretty colours like this:
![]() Plus a lot of people are doing interesting things with the 3.8 cars these days should more performance be desired, think GNX turbocharged goodness. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

So if it's strictly Toyota and popup lights you're down to:
1984-1993 Celica 1985-1995 MR2 1984-1991 Corolla GT-S 1982-1992 Supra A 5th gen Celica GT would be a good first car. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

lol guys. this is getting good...
We are in the hunt for a MK3 supra. The MKI mr2 is too dangerous. Small and unpredictable The Ae86 is well, run to the ground, and a good example will be hard to get and pricy. Unless i get an alltrac celica. -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... I hardly log in anymore, last login Today Sept 6 2019, and I was forced just to clarify a post. LOL

The difference being the Firebird is only 14-18 years old and is safe, so that's why I even bothered mentioning it and this was after exhausting the options that were Toyota with popup lights and even mentioning the NA8 Miata. It's not like I was pushing it, just merely mentioning it since it met what seemed like the most important criteria. He said no she only likes Toyota period and that's fine and the end of it.
