Ok today coming home from work, before i pulled into my garage stall i noticed a puddle of stuff on the ground. I got out to see what it was, and to my suprise it was motor oil... the puddle was about the size of a basketball, and the situation was not looking to good seeing as i just cleaned my spot the day before, so i know the leaking had just started... So I opened my hood to find little droplets of oil sprayed all over everything on the front left side of the underhood area... I checked my dipstick, everything turned out normal, so i started the car up. Then i notice a thin stream of oil smoke coming from the now oil sprayed area... Anyways i just got back from the dealer about an hour ago so they can tell me whats wrong. I have no idea what is wrong here and im worried this is going to be expensive... Grrr...

Where's it coming out of? It could be several different things... from easy to terrible...

If its coming from a seam, I'd assume its just a gasket, but you'd probably feel the effects while driving, ya I think if you describe it in more detail people could better assess the situation, better yet take a pic or get a pic of a 6gen engine bay and photochop a circle in the effected area.
![]() But now that I read it again it sounds like you cant see exactly where its coming from, Id suggest cleaning the area, start the car, go around front and play with the throttle and see if you see anything coming out. A light would be great so you can see down in the engine bay. This post has been edited by Uppitycracker: Mar 17, 2004 - 2:27 AM |

Why do you crazy people go to dealerships?
Most small shops will give you a free estimate.. nothing like paying someone $85 for them to tell you that your car is leaking oil and that they have to tear the motor down to find the leak for an additonal $250 -------------------- -Mike

Take out the front passenger wheel. If the area under your timig belt and stuff is soaked....it could be one of the seals or rings behind the tensioner and those pulleys(i think that's what they are called) Got my leak fixed for $300.

NO kidding, I have a shop I go to, they are awesome, they'll look at my car any time for free, give me discounts if its going to be expensive or it cost more then they thought it would. |

well i got my car back today... its a worst case senario... The head gasket is the cause of the leak, and its not cheap to fix... the dealer estimated me $1240 to fix. I dunno if ill be going to the dealer to have it fixed, but i need to get that done asap. To make matters worse when looking at my car they also told me my cv boots in the front were cracked and would need replacing soon as well, for $470... yeah this really sucks. And before you badmouth dealers, get a good relationship with one first. The dealer i went to waived the fee to determine the problem, and i paid nothing.

Ya man they can be ok, but alot of the time they rape ya, but they also specialize in your particular make so its worth it. But still alot of mom n pop shops can handle most things. Its just a head gasket? Why is it so much money?? Maybe you could get the gasket and do it your self?? |

i dont know why its so much- but they have to replace seals and such, id have to gt the invoice out to list everything... and i am not a do it yourself guy when it comes to fixing anything... i dont know what the names of most of the tools in a toolbox are, let alone how to fix an engine leak, lol...

Labor. It'll easily take a dealer or a garage 2-3 days or more to get it all done correctly. Mind you, pulling the head off isn't an easy task (numerous parts to go off and on... the dealers might actually just pull the motor to make it easier). They probably won't charge much for parts but the labor will be pretty intense. As far as the oil leak goes... headgasket is probably one of the worst case scenarios... but be glad you found it and took it in. Headgaskets can cause major headaches not to mention engine failure. Honestly speaking... you're better off getting a used engine and replace the sucker if you can't do the new headgasket yourself... that's the easy way out. Shops will always charge a pretty penny to do that sort of work... although 1200 is on the expensive side. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

well whats the associated cost of a used engine swap? id really rather not go that route seeing as im the second owner and i know the entire history of the car- single female in her fourties babied my car- and i dont wanna end up getting a used beaten 5s-fe... but this thought did cross my mind when i got the estimate... i really am hoping i can just find someplace to do it for under a grand really...

a head gasket is about an 6-8 hour job..... at 70-100 dollars an hour, labor alone is about $700+..... then the headgasket is like $60 or something high like that (because my 4a-fe headgasket went out.... my solution.... new motor)..... i was quoted $940 at a local shop that i always go to.....

new motor cost about 1600 installed... people round here replace head gaskets as if it was nothing... i gotta whisper the thought of doing a 3sgte swap into your car... if you love power, the 3s will do you good... 1200 is a crazy price for headgasket... espically since you will be spending all this money and wont get 1 hp out of it. i would go and ask around for a better price... the dealership is just suicide for your wallet... dealership is just good for getting OEM parts...
