I don't have a owners manual. Mine has 144,500 miles on the motor. What maintenance do I need to do?
-Already changed oil -Spark plug gap? -Thermostat temperature range? -All belts intervals? Mileage wise. -Fuel filter? Mileage wise. -Catalytic? Should I even change it? -O2 sensor? Should I change it? -Tranny fluid? Mileage wise. Can't afford the 3sgte swap till next summer so just wanna make my motor last. |

Well you should definetly change your timing belt if you don't know when it was last changed. If that breaks it could mess up your valves (I was lucky that it didn't hurt anything when mine went out). Also you might want to look into changing your clutch if you don't know when that was last changed.

re: the timing belt breaking and messing things up. I believe our engines are non-interference so really it won't do any damage.

Update. Changed the coolant and thermostat and now the thermostat housing that goes into the head is leaking bad. Anyone got any ideas on waht could be causing it? I'm gonna try the old thermostat back tommorrow in the daylight. I put in the new seal so don't know what else it could be. Oh well...

interference means that if the timing goes off, the pistons will hit the valves aka: bye bye engine i know 3000gt's and 1st/2nd gen eclipses do it, pretty sure its not a problem with toyotas. -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

Check the seal again. I could have been pressed on wrong or something. As far as basic maintenece goes... the only things you really need to worry about, assuming your motor runs good, is the oil changes. Spark plugs and stuff should also be checked... but unless you're car is runnin really bad... they don't really *need* to be changed. Don't worry about the o2 or cat. Those should last most of the car's life. As for everything else, IMO, check them. If they look worn or if you feel unsafe... go ahead and replace them. Typically speaking... they should last quite a while. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

Seal was the wrong size. Damn autozone. Now I snapped the lower thermostat housing bolt. Posted a new topic for some help in replacing it. |

Ok, all is good now. There was a chip in the lower portion of the thermostat housing. I filed and sanded it smoothe so the seal sits in flush all around. Car should be able to run easier without rust and straight water running in the cooling system.
